What was the boss battle you won where you won by the hair of your chin...

In my case, it was Fran's feather like hair. I beat Zalera right after the Tomb of Raithwall, all with quickenings (It is the only boss I really felt the desire to use them on, probally because it is cheap, and because I was pretty early. Even though Zalera is accessible right after the Tomb of Raithwall, you still shouldn't try it until way later than that!). Anyway, I had Zalera down to what looked like 5 or less HP, and only Fran survived, and one shot from her bow brought the damn thing down!

Now Zeromus, he was a similar story, but took me WAY longer to defeat. That one was Basch, and losing against that bastard made me cry! (I am a nerd!)

I once lost a close one against Zodiark. Definitely annoying because it takes a stinking long time to get to him.

Zodiark. I hate that little bugger. Waste all that time to get to him and he spams his insta-death attack like nothing else. I just barely won on my third try. I think Fran had something like 500HP left and everyone else was dead.

Zodiark... I don't think there is a cheap way to beat him, nor is there a way to win without it being a "close call". ESPECIALLY because of the stupid Paling at the end that only goes away for a split second, if you don't use a quickening before he does that then you're practically fucked! Plus he takes a longass time to get to from the closest crystal.

For me it was like: Challenge Zodiark, go complete more recipes, challenge Zodiark, advance more in the story, challenge Zodiark, take care of stuff in the beastiary, etc... until it finally worked. As opposed to going through all those damn Etems over and over again.

The Undying the first time I fought him was a pretty close shave. I had run out of MP-recovering items, and he had his physical/magical nullifying shield up, so I basically thought I dead. His shield fell just in time for me to launch a Quickening chain with Balthier and (even though their MP had all gone) get enough people involved to deal about 20,000 damage. Shortly afterwards, he bit the dust, but I was down to just Basch and Ashe.

Zodiark is the only one I really had trouble on. Instant death/blind attack? Paling that only goes away for a split second? I think I finally beat the thing with only Penelo left, no MP, an Ether and a few Hi-Potions.

probably Tiamat, because fran had 1 health left and she shot him the last time as he was readying rake.

There have been a few for me; but in the game I'm working on right now, I took on the Marilith hunt as soon as it became available, and Balthier was down to 1 hit point. Luckily the final attack dealt massive damage and finished it off. (Did I mention this was before the Tomb of Raithwall? Also was using a Francisca.)

Good ol' axes -- sometimes they deal real crap damage, but sometimes you get the big damage when you need it most.

The Undying the first time I fought him was a pretty close shave.

Oh, I hated him. I was at okay levels, and I was almost out of items, had no MP left, had all three characters but they were almost dead. I brought Fran in after Balthier died, and she shot him with an arrow randomly because I forgot to turn of her Gambits, and I won. Oh the power of forgetting.

Elder Wyrm, The Undying, Cuchulainn, Ultima and Zodiark were the closest as far as I remember. I seem to remember also having some difficulty against Zeromus and Exodus. That being said, out of that list I only died against Elder Wyrm, The Undying and Zodiark.

I haven't actually died (got Game Over) on any bosses, but a lot of them were close to it. Another one I remember nearly failing was Fafnir. I know he's not that tough, and on my second run-through I beat him easy, but I was at crap levels, and had crap weapons. I'd resorted to wearing Mirror Mail (for Reflect), using my weak characters (my strong ones were dead), using ranged weapons (to stay out of its way) and running round in circles behind that rock to gain MP.

The Mandragoras(sp?). Those little fuckers fucked me up! Only Balthier was alive and Basch were alive, 10 Quicken chain+inferno iirc.

Yeah, Quickenings get busted on a lot, but they really are your friend against a tough enemy that keeps dodging about or one that is in critical and has really upped its defense.

I don't think I've ever beaten a boss w/o using a fairly lengthy Quickening chain. and I have 2 teams so 2 fairly lengthy Quickening chains.

Omega Mark XIII was my 'challenge'.

It was just so long, not to mention if you fucked up ONCE, you were dead before you hit the floor!

(Reverse + Protect, worked a charm!)

I took on Trickster when the mark first appeared. It was really challenging i have to say. I used many quickening chains as attacks and magic didn't deal great damage :(. after many revives I got penelo's mp high enough to enable a quickining. I was glad to get a chain of 14 even though 14 isn't that great, its better than no chain at all hehe.

And it was so satisfying defeating Trickster, that huge yet cute chocobo hehe.

lol... I've only used quickenings on the optional Demonwall.

Mandatory bosses, I abstain.
