I just came up on this Elder Scrolls Oblivion game and im about 2.5hrs into the game. I've explored a few dungeons/caves on my way to completing my first quest. I'm not in the habit of asking for help or using guides to games, but i thought i'd throw this out there.

My question is, how important is it to collect armor and objects that enemies drop?

Seems like im overly obsessing on collecting armor and changing/dropping equipment after defeating these fools.

Just get what you need such as better eqiupment/weapons than you already have or epuipment thats worth a bit of money then sell it.

You're playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?! You're in for a long haul. That game is very long. It's like a game filled with mostly sidequests. I think the main quest is under 20 hours long the sidequests take 300 hours! :)

I thought it was great, I used to own it and I played 10 hours. I got rid of it because I didn't feel like spending so much time at one game at that time. If you like this game, research Fallout 3, which is another first person rpg being developed, and it's by the same company Bethesda Softworks. Also, try The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. :D

I have it and I've been playing for over 50 hours. I haven't even started the main quest...

It's too open ended for me to play seriously and I just go around doing odd jobs and stealing from my guild for cash.

It's open-ended as hell and just when you think you've seen it all, there's a thriving mod community to add weird shit. Like Master Chief and and Cloud's motorcycle.

None of that armour is special unless it's enchanted. If it's not, just sell all of that shit. You can always buy the same kind later.

noskillbassist: That sounds more like GTA.

Yea, im getting that feeling of it being a massive game. It took 30mins to find and walk to 2 destinations last night. By the time u get to your destination, hit 3 dungeons along the way, you forget what in the heck your main objective was.

Still fun though, took me a while to get into FFXII too, maybe i should have maybe pulled the trigger on GTA4

Well the higher level that you are the better armour you can get, If you are using heavy armour I suggest you head southwest from imperial city to a dungeon called Vindasel (on the map you can see a fork in the road and it is quite close to the old bridge) In there is a woman named umbra, if you kill her you can take her armour which is very good and her sword which is one of the best swords in the game. The sword increases it's attack as you level and when I was level 3 the sword had 12 attack!

Are you using a strategy guide? It lists all the stuff you can do, which is astounding. I thought Final Fantasy XII was long but The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion blows it away! If you want to take another step up in length, play a Mmorpg like Final Fantasy XI or World of Warcraft. :D

Im on a quest in the Goblin Cave to find one of the guild masters, pretty descent characters in there level wise. Also, in the "other dimension, fire world" leveling up my character. Looking for Lockpicks!!!! Picking locks is a pain in tha kazou!

Its going ok, but i find that im splitting my time with playing MOH online, just ranked in the top 1500 last nite.

Nice! Yea Oblivion was a pretty cool place. I didn't like lockpicking as much, I kept breaking my lock picks. I remember playing that game I ended up defeating a ton of soldiers in battle and my bounty kept going up. It all started when I accidentally stole a horse. I didn't know it was illegal! :choc2:!!!

Do you guys have your sound up for picking locks? It just takes a bit of quick reflexes and a good ear to hear the difference between whether or not the ... metal thing will stick or not.

I was awful at it in the beginning, but now I only lose a pick if I'm in a rush/don't care.

If you're level 10+ plus you can do a daedric quest and you're reward is an unbreakable lockpick called the skeleton key, it makes security pointless. You should try and get it (I can't remember which shrine the quest is from though sorry)

You don't have to walk...just use your map to teleport.

And ignore the main quest. Just makes it harder to traverse the country-side, if that's what you're into.

You can only fast travel to locations you've already been to (excluding cities) so you do have to walk sometimes.

I beat Morrowind on my xbox, then I downloaded Oblivion and started playing it recently, what do y'all recommend the difficulty slider be at the beginning? I put it all the way on hard just to try it out and I got killed often by damn rats, even while blocking with a shield. The goblin witch I snuck-attacked then ran for a door, then returned for another sneak-attack, etc., until it died after some 15 hit-and-runs or so. Obviously, maybe I should take it down a notch, but how low? Or what strategies should I use in order to kickass even at max difficulty? I don't want the game too easy like in Morrowind - once my character reached around level 50-60, it was pretty much invincible.
Also, I haven't bothered with enchanted items yet, but do you have to be recharging them manually with soul gems all the time?
And last but not least, what soul gem + soul allows for constant effect enchantments?
I assume daedric weapons are still top-notch in this game and have the most capacity for enchantment in general, right?

doomjockey
05-23-2008, 05:37 AM
If you want a difficult game, I suggest you set the slider somewhere above mid. Where above mid is totally up to you. If you're searching for an edge, I find that generally, magic trumps physical combat since you want to be able to inflict decent damage without getting close enough to take damage. Of course everyone has their own play style so arrows might work well if you're an agility class.

To recharge items you either find someone that can recharge them for you for a fee or you use soul gems filled with a soul, what kind of soul it is depends on how much your weapon can be recharged.

Constant effect enchantments only work on worn items (armour, rings etc), there are I think five different types of soul that can be captured but none of them will give you constant effect enchantments on weapons. Enchanted Worn items never have to be recharged but weapons will have a certain amount of uses depending on what enchantments it has and what kind of soul gem you have used.

Yea, try it out! I don't think I'll beat this game, too long for my taste and also Fallout 3 is coming out, which is made by the same company. Is Fallout 3 going to be a similar style, and also open ended with tons of sidequests and hundreds of hours of play, just like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was?

At the moment I don't know if I want to get into a game that long, unless it's something like Final Fantasy XIII, which probably will be very long, or Rapture(code name for Square Enix's next rpg to succeed Final Fantasy XII). Final Fantasy XI I enjoyed a lot, although I haven't tried other Mmorpgs.

DiscoDan, do you play Morrowind?

No you can't but there are house mods where you can store your stuff unless you're playing on a PS3.
