Who's beaten this sucker? I just took him on for the first time yesterday (damn annoying journey) and lost. Still, I nearly beat him -- I had him in critical status when I lost, so I'm sure with a bit of tweaking, I can finish him off. Any general strategy tips anyone's found useful that might help out, though?

I beat him...about a month ago actually. I had already beaten Yiazmat and was I wanted to get the Wyrmhero Blade...(which kicks ass btw!)

For me, he took 25 mins to beat more or less. I only had Vaan attacking him with the Zodiac Spear with constant inverse and decoy + support spells from Basch and Ashe. The weird thing is that I heard he had 10 mil something hp or something...and whenever he fired those deadly 5k damage lasers, it seemed to drain his health too.

Ofcourse, my characters were in the upper 80's by then and I've beaten Yiazmat in 3.5 hours, 1 round, no phoenix downs, no retreats...just pure assault. ;) But yeah...it was a bitch getting to Omega, so I feel for you, man.

Did I mention the Wyrmhero Blade was awesome? lol

Dumbest battle in the entire game. Thanks god they decided to bring his HP down from 10 million to 1 million for the US version.

But yeah, I beat him first time. He's a joke with reverse.

Omega XII is based on Omega's original spider-mech design from FFV:

Oh really? Interesting note, Throne. I always assumed it was supposed to be like the Ultima/Omega weapons in previous games. Then again, it kind of does look like the VIII weapons, not so much the VI, VII and X ones...

Anyway, this guy and Yiazmat are the ONLY thing I have left to do before Bahamut, I've planned to challenge them and abandoned my game months ago since... but I'll try and pick it up again, I'm around the 70s.

I think this might be what I'm doing next seeing as I left it saved near him and all.

But, how exactly does the "Reverse trick" work? I tried it a couple times and barely got far at all.

You basically set your gambits and battle with one person being a tank who batters the shit out of it while the other two members continuously cast Reverse and Decoy on the tank and heal when necessary...

Agent0042
04-22-2008, 09:04 PM
Yeah, I noticed that he was based on the FFV Omega. (You guys know my love for FFV.) That's awesome. And yeah, I have U.S. version, so I only have to deal with 1 million HP.

Hawkeye, I'll try that. Thanks.

Like I've said, I haven't tried this method out but I've watched videos on YouTube and it seems pretty effective...

I haven't really tried it myself, either. To me, it's one of those methods that borders on the edge of cheating and makes the game too easy. But I wanna get this boss battle over with, so I'll give it a go.

Thanks... well, that's what I tried and usually when I enter he wastes me before they have time to set Decoy and Reverse. And like I said, my people are strong enough...

Guess I'll wait for Agent's report on that method.

Make sure if you use reverse on a tank, you leave their helmet off (lower magick resist => better chance of Reverse hitting).

Agent0042

Good tip, terabyte, thanks! I had forgotten before about how the magic resist can screw with those types of spells.

Zak
04-23-2008, 04:52 AM
Hmm, guess I'll try that next time then.

BTW Agent, I wouldn't call it a "cheap" way to beat Omega, because that's exactly what the strategy guide tells you to do.

How would you expect to beat it any other way?

Agent0042
04-23-2008, 04:59 AM
Well, I nearly beat it using standard tactics. I had one character equipped with a Cat-Ear Hood, one with a Ribbon and one with a Bubble Belt. (And all under Protect status, whenever possible.) I then simply hacked away at it, healing or reviving whenever needed. It was enough to get his HP to critical, but then I lost.

The reason I call it "cheap" is because I was under the impression is that it was one of those tactics that pretty much guarantees a win. If that's a mistaken impression, then I'll take back the idea of it being "cheap."

Here is a video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=AOJqNrc1OAY) of using the Reverse+Lure method on Fafnir... I am guessing it would work and be set up the same way with Omega with some alterations...

I'm on dialup, so I don't always have much of a chance to view YouTube videos. But that's fine -- I think I understand the basics of the strategy from reading it. I usually do better with detailed instructions than by viewing something anyway. Like I said, I was able to get him in critical before, so this should be enough to put me over the edge. I spent about a half hour last night getting everything set up and saved so that when I'm ready to do it again, all I have to do is head straight from the save point to where he is and I'm good to go. (No, I didn't have to redo the entire thing -- it's just that I hadn't saved prior to the last branch of getting everything unlocked.)

Agreed, it's unfair to call Reverse cheap - again, with the helmet issue, it can be a crapshoot. Additionally, its effect is so short-lived (ten seconds or so?), and its MP requirements are ridiculous. It took me FOREVER to beat Yiazmat w/Reverse+Lure b/c I didn't have any hi-ethers and I kept having to "Syphon" MP from other party members... then revive my team b/c I lost my opportunity to cast Reverse. D'oh! (God bless Berserk + Haste + Warmage + Masamune + Genji Gloves!)

I haven't done any of the 'uberbosses' yet; I've still yet to do the likes of Fafnir, Shadowseer and the other later hunts, never mind Omega Mk XII or Yiazmat.

I may eventually get around to doing them, but I'm probably weeks away from it. When I go back home in the summer I'll give it a whirl.

Agent0042
04-25-2008, 04:05 AM
The battle -- it is won. And having used the strategy, I stand by the idea of it being somewhat cheap. Several things...

1. I have no doubt that the battle would have been a lot more challenging had I not used the strategy. There were some touch-and-go moments, but I never really felt too much like I was in any real danger of losing, and certainly a lot less so than the first time I tried the battle.
2. The helmet thing was a non-issue -- I removed the helmet on my tank (Vaan.)
3. Omega XII uses nothing but physical attacks, making this the perfect strategy for him.
4. Running out of MP was generally a non-issue -- MP gained from either taking or dealing damage was enough to keep things steady.
5. When he got down to critical, the battle became tougher, but I just stuck it out and made sure to react quickly. And I finished the battle with a nice, strong Quickening.
6. I would never try this strategy with Yiazmat -- for one thing, it doesn't seem nearly as compatible with that battle -- secondly, with Yiazmat, it makes sense to leave the battle every so often and save.

Hawkeye_1138

Good job.

I have to agree with not trying this on Yiazmat...way too much HP, power, and chance of losing favor of the battle if you make one mistake...

:smrt: Though I find this method does prove helpful against Level 99 Red Chocobo's in Ozmone when trying to steal Empyreal Souls off of them...

Luckily I have the Official walkthrough ;) I'm not actually there yet but ffs Yiazmat sounds the hardest, he has 50 million health!

Agent0042
04-28-2008, 09:44 PM
Yiazmat isn't as rough as you'd think -- mainly because you can save and even visit other areas and come back. There's a counter that will keep going up each time you return, but don't let it trouble. The key is to remember to dispel all the status effects he puts on himself each time you return. The battle doesn't really become challenging until fairly late on.

I don't really get the round system on Hell Wyrm or Yiazmat...what's is the significance/ what does it do?

Agent0042
04-29-2008, 04:32 AM
As far as I can tell... nothing. I never used it with Hell Wyrm (that battles not nearly tough enough that I would find the need to leave and save), but I exited and reentered quite a few times with Yiazmat, and as far as I can tell, there's no significance to the count. It doesn't increase his HP, or make him stronger, or anything. It's just there for the record, apparently, yet there's no lasting record of it once the battle's over.

Hawkeye_1138

So it's one of those things that makes you paranoid that leaving in the middle of battle will make it tougher when you come back? Or in other words, it is pointless and useless?...

Agent0042
04-29-2008, 09:00 PM
Yeah, I think it can safely be considered a paranoia thing unless there's a definitive source somewhere that says otherwise. I never noticed it being anything other than that.

I'm really starting to wish I had played this game fully.

I got around 40 hours into it got stuck at a boss (can't remember which one, just remember he attacks you as you use an elevator)

And bang! Just like that....I never played again.

EDIT: I believe the part I got up to was in Pharos: Sub Terra

To me Omega Mark XII was harder just because he could kill my 3 lvl 99 characters much faster than Yiazmat could.

at lvl 99 Yiazmat wasn't too hard in the beginning. Used standard <40%hp Renew and arise of course, also a few buffs like bravery, haste, bubble, shell and protect....but once he does Growing Threat or whatever that doubles his Lvl, I just used Arise and completely stopped using buffs. I only really use Vaan, Ashe, and Basch. He only killed my entire party a couple times. Took almost 3 hours. Oh and I also dedicated bravery, and bubble buffs to a particular character. I.E. I didn't use gambit "Ally Any" made things go by faster and a lot less uneccessary magic casting. Only used bravery on Ashe and Vaan. Vaan was my primary melee who I equipped with the Tournesol, and Ashe had the Masamune. I used no offensive magic...way too slow, lags healing too much

I am saved at the save crystal right before the area where Ultima is marinating. Can someone give me an exact guide on how to get to Omega Mark XII by giving me order in which the Gate Stones are supposed to be activated? If they can, I will make my own complete guide on how to gt to Omega Mark XII. Thanks.

Normally I'd get on your case for bumping an old topic, but since you're asking for help on something that hasn't been mentioned rather than answering an age-old question like most people do when they bump topics, the only legit map I've ever found of the entire crystal is at www.ff12maps.com

Go there, use that map, looking at it you'll see why it'll be crazy to give directions using words.

Crap boss IMO because one ability makes or breaks this encounter: Reverse.

If you've got it, and you use it, instant-win pretty much (with a couple of attempts).

If you don't have it, good luck winning under any circumstances.

This is an example of a binary outcome and it's the worst video-game encounter design you can get. The difficulty of the encounter is basically either: Piss Easy or Virtually Impossible. There's no middle ground.

Yiazmat's a way better encounter, shame about the length though.

Zak

I still can't see why people are calling the Reverse/Decoy strategy "cheap". I'm using it, with three level 75 characters HASTED, and I can only get him down to about 75% before he eventually wastes my tank (who's even wearing a Bubble Belt!) and everything goes crazy. Am I doing something wrong here? And I'm using the Zodiac Spear... so... where exactly is the "cheap"ness in this? And how would it work without this trick? "Instant-win" my ass.

Hell, even took the headgear off and all...

Aqueous
07-20-2008, 05:46 PM
Well I'm pretty sure I explained in my post that it's cheap AND necessary, and that's why I think this boss encounter is crap.

And yes, a strategy can be both. It's an overpowered spell used to counter an overpowered boss. Craptastic design.

Ceidwad

I've never fought Omega, but I have seen videos of it, and the rate of his attacks are shockingly quick. Seems to me that even if you have Reverse on continuous gambit and never run out of MP, you'll still have some problems because he will be able to hit you in between castings of Reverse.

Zak
07-22-2008, 06:44 AM
All... right, just beat it today. And, while I did use Reverse, I'm not gonna deny that it was challenging. My three characters were level 74, though, I don't know what level you guys are that call this battle "piss easy", but I don't doubt that if I were 20 levels higher it probably would have been.

You're saying that Berserk doesn't get in your way? I'm surprised I didn't see a single mention of it in this thread, not to mention the fact that there isn't a "berserk immune" accessory since in this game it's considered a "positive" status effect.

But let me say that the Decoy idea didn't work, because once the said Decoy was dead, everything went haywire... I dunno if I'm missing anything, or if once again it's a level issue. Sure there's "Ally: Status Berserk - Dispel" but that could interfere with Reverse. So instead I just used that and "Self - Reverse" on everyone, because once the Decoy dies, if they're the only one that's been Reversed (which the strategy seems to involve according to you all), then everyone else is fucked, they wouldn't be able to revive AND re-Decoy and quickly smack Reverse on them before being raped by Omega. Self-Reverse is much more reliable, and forget Decoy. And of course, Dispel Berserk, as it's much less of a hassle that way. As for Arising those who occasionally die (which again would be less of a big deal because at least one left standing IS bound to be reversed), that I did manually. I would never want someone who's NOT reversed to be the Ariser. Plus, whenever the rare occasion that only ONE is left standing, they'd almost always be reversed if you follow that rule, it which case I just used Phoenix Downs.

Also cost me three Hi-Ethers... they helped quite well, I didn't know if it makes a difference but I hoped to catch the subject while they WEREN'T reversed just in case.

And, considering the MP shortage, I'd rather not risk the quickening, better to play it safe and hold out all the way. At least if you do it the above way.

Finally, I remember reading this somewhere. Is it true that the "Omega Badge" disappears, if you look away so the little item bag is out of your view, and turn around again, it's not there? Not like I'd try it, but confirm/deny?

wolfmaster913

Loot always disappears when you leave the screen, also disappears after a couple of minutes...Also a related thing: has anyone tried to get Omega to drop a Mythril Sword? It's an extremely rare drop but has anyone done it?
