Those are nice, but I see an inconsistence of styles. In a pic, you nail the anatomy just right, yet in an other, there is anatomy disproportions and other similar problems. The third pic is the perfect example of that. The first and third pics are good example of what I mean. Both have static poses that show more problems than the more complex second and fourth, where it would be expected to show such compositional problems.

In other words, the second and the fourth seems to have been made by an other person entirely.

But they are still good work nonetheless.

They look pretty nice.

The anatomy problem is usually what's picked on first, but there's not much more science to improving on that than with hammering down a nail with a hammer.
There are a couple of mind tricks you can play on yourself though, to make your learning more effective. Most drawing books will tell you to break down individual body parts into the most basic shape possible and go from there. That works for most people but not always. The principle is to turn the process into something your brain will understand the best, thus making the whole thing clearer. The breaking down thing didn't work so well for me actually, but i did find a method i could relate to after a while.

Also, and this is what usually makes us look at a complicated drawing and go "wow", there seems to be some trouble with how you manage the information in each piece.
Look at your very second drawing on the thread for example, it just a sketch but works pretty well, and this is not just because we humans are all naturally lenient and become impressed with a sketch just because it's just a sketch. It's simplicity itself is it's strength, since all the stuff you put in there is clearly managed: you outline the shapes, vary the thickness a good bit, making it look nice, and there you go.
It's also what makes Hearts in Armor work so well, i'd say. You put some good strong lines, some light shading that's pretty well defined and there you go. I'm pretty sure you'd get something a lot less effective if you had thinned the lines and darkened/smoothed the shading for example (then again, if you're sure you want to do something a certain way, that's that).
The Zero Works well for slightly different reasons, but the gist of it is pretty much the same.

The real bitch of the matter arises when the drawing starts to get more complicated, and you have to start handling gradients, textures, flat shading, smooth shading, line thickness (or lack thereof) for it all (to name a few), and how to distribute it. The real high level guys have that ability to show us their work and give us the feeling that there's a method to the madness, even if sometimes we're not fully aware of it.

Take your Persona 4 sketch.
It works great but you lose something when you color it. It could have something to do with all those really strong colors fighting for dominance, along with a lack of lines to play the referee. I'd say it's a pretty good bet that if you tone them down a lil bit, maybe bring those lines up somewhat for good measure, you might get something nicer.

Also, a very nice person at conceptart gave me this link

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm

It's quick and dirty and very helpful. Maybe it'll help you too.

Well, sometimes it's just a matter of acquiring the little key bits of knowledge that tie the whole thing together, then you start to see things differently.

I can't draw anything like the guys up at massiveblack for instance, but even i can start to understand that they don't just hammer the canvas mad dog style, nor are they doing rocket science. You start off simple then follow the little rules (well, more like guidelines), and then build up on what you think needs building up. If you keep it simple within your head, it should all run a lot smoother.

(not that i can read anyone's mind or anything)

Your lining is good as far as the flow, cleanliness, of it goes. But thicker lines are usually used for parts that are closer to the "camera" or other parts that should stand out of the rest. Not to highlight random parts. Other than that, you may see a lot of it in many artist' works as general "contours" that help the characters stand out of a piece when the background might look too crowded otherwise.

Basically, it should help to create a perspective in your illustration, and shouldn't be used for the only sake that it looks a bit cooler when you put random thick lining here and there.

Look at some of Pete Woods stuff and you might understand what I mean

Kblargh
11-27-2008, 10:11 PM
The idea of stroking thicker in parts closer to the camera is done by comparison with the other parts of the drawing. In this case there's nothing significantly closer.
I don't think the lines are randomly thick at all, specially if you look at the earlier version of this drawing.
He put emphasis on the outer lines, specially the big long strokes that hardly bend, which helped solidify the overall form. The rest got thinner strokes and balanced it out. The rule gets broken a little with the thinning out of the lines by the shoulders, but i'd say it works, so it's a rule well broken.
Color and lighting was vastly improved too. The light sourcing might be a little off by the legs, but i wouldn't think it's any big a deal. It looks awesome overall.

If there's any gripe to be had, i'd say that right arm could use a little sculpting, like thinning out the areas between the muscles (arm looks too flat) and maybe doing something about that right hand (looks too small). Also, Vanessa's hairline looks too far up. It could come, like, a good third of the way down and still give her plenty of cranium (and while i'm on a nitpicking trip, maybe if you were to thin out the lines at the bottom of her eyes and strengthen the top a bit, i think she'd look pretty good).

Anyway, that's my two cents.

EDIT: Thinking a bit on it, there's the chance bringing her hairline down will make her hair look too thick. I was just looking at it and suddenly got that feeling.
Sometimes fixing a detail will reveal another little flaw and start some kinda cascade. It can get tiring at times, and could take some patience to work through it all. Then again, i could be wrong about that.

Nymph

I really like your works, expecially the face close-ups. You got those proportions down really well.
In the last full-body picture, the only 'off' thing I noticed was the left arm that was a bit short.
Just keep experimenting, it's already looking really good. =)

Here's hoping for a good year.

To start, I started this Persona 4 pic as soon as I got back from the holiday:

This is the second version. I wanted to try some cell shading again as well as some awkward photoshoppery to achieve the text effects so hopefully it doesn't look too terrible. The rounded rectangle shape got a lot of use. I also tried texturing, which didn't go too catastrophically, to my untrained eye. Lastly, if anyone wonders, the Japanese on the side is just her name.

You should remove her navel. It's way too low. And there's something off with her mouth. Her lower lip is my indication of where you should look at.

There's also the outline of her right arm that isn't complete. Her biceps should be fully outlined since it's in front of the rest of her torso. I could point at other minor things, but those are nitpicks and I'm sure those little details will get better as you continue to practice and study.

I could have sworn that Xenogears was episode V, and Episode IV covered the Eldridge.

Neg

Nope. There were supposed to be like 6 or 7 Xenosaga eps too. Then the writers left or sth. And the makers kept trying to make people happy. Like they worked on the battle system for Ep. II after complaints about it being too much about story in Ep. I, and then people complained about the battle system so they pulled it out for Ep. III.

Ep. III's battle system is so BLECH to me because my party only does Small Break damage and it takes FOREVER to finish battles -_-

Really wish I could read Perfect Works ;_;;

If team Monolith ever gets back together, they should merge Xenosaga with Xenogears, but make it more like Xenogears (in style and music).

Mwaha. PW was like my first translation project when I started learning to read Japanese and I still have notes :smrt:

That is my dream of dreams. The two can fit so perfectly, intimately together it reminds me of something naughty :naughty:

And I will take a Mitsuda OST over most others any day

I didn't mention anything about the eyes, because I think they'll be fixed just by adding colors.

Stop looking at so much anime, weeaboo.

I mean more specifically like a XS/XG retelling for the PSP (though I don't own one) or simply an anthology of I-VI done in the style of Xenogears; you know with the fun cartoonish characters, anime cut-scenes, and loads of blasphemy (XS I-III got that part correct though.)

Xenosaga seems to me what it must be like to be a person of religious faith.

It's like WAIT, that doesn't make sense.....but I love it anyway....fuck the illogical bits, I believe it in spite of itself.

Cuz the Shion/KOS-MOS/T-elos stuff is like WHAT YOU SMOKIN' MONOLITH SOFT!?!

Marshall Lee
01-07-2009, 09:36 PM
I never totally understood the whole Mary bit of Xenosaga, that could be attributed to having beaten I yet or playing II - III. I have watched said scenes on Youtube though. After seeing the end of part III, it makes me think that the whole religion aspect only played a sub-plot to the series. I still don't understand why the original group broke up after XS I.

Neg

Upon reflection, Ep. II is probably my favorite because I love the battle system that so many people hate (even though I do use Shion and MOMO, so I have to deal with a lot of unpredictability in breaking because they only have circle/A zone strikes) and because MOMO/Sakura/Rubedo is my favorite thing about the whole series.

Yeah, Allen/Shion/Kevin is close, but somewhat rote in execution.

Marshall Lee

Do you get play as Kevin/RT (maybe in flashback) during Ep. II?

Neg

Nope. You fight him in Ep. III, though.

You get to play Miyuki and Allen in Ep. III, too <3333

I remember there was a reason I squeed with excitement when reading a/b III in the wiki. I still need to buy it though... Have you played I & II for DS? Good/Bad? Same/Better?

Neg

Not released for US. I could play it, cuz DS is region-free but I'm pretty sure it isn't in English.

That's always nice to see.

I really quite dislike her

lolwut?

Nerd grrrls over cybernetic fanservice, anyday of the week.

Though, she was made less nerdy over the course of the games. She gets bitchy in Ep. III. It's kinda like when Josie becomes Bitchy McBitch in Josie and the Pussycats.

DELICIOUS.

Marshall Lee
01-07-2009, 10:22 PM
Shion, bitchy? She was so sweet in Episode I, or is naive the word i'm looking for. They should make a Shion x Kevin gaiden, now that would be fan service

Neg

She becomes more and more confident as the series goes on.

Well, I'm a big fan of the Xeno series (more so Gears, never got to play much of the Saga, save 1. :( ).

BUT EMERALDA, GOOOOOD YES.

Same the Persona/MegaTen in gerenal. I loooove everything about it, but I've only played a good bit of the beginning of Shin Megami Tensei 2 for the SNES. But Chie? God yes, once more~

I love the fuck out of King of Fighters and all fighting games in general, so I'll rave quite a bit about a lot of them. Vanessa, God. Yes. :3c

But ah, yeah. deviantART link for me plz? :3cccc

Those 2 are my favorites (especially the second one). Out of all of your work, I think they represent the culmination of your style and technique. You've improved quite a bit since the last time I ... hum... lectured you here. ^^, Keep it up. I can foresee you having a place in the industry of your choice down the road. As in: professional character designer.

My only criticism would go for the first pic here. The hand is way too sketchy compared to the rest. The second one is near perfect , some lines I would correct some parts of the lining here and there (respecting your style, of course) but that would again be nitpicks. As a whole, the pic is awesome.
