Go in with low HP (yellow) and go all out with Limit Breaks. That's what I did, and it worked.

Diablos + any strong GF boosted should do it as well.

IMO, Diablos (and any other GF) takes up too much time to get the desired results.

However, percentage based attacks help a lot.

Therefore, I use Quistis' micro-missiles on them.
Use micromissiles twice and finish with a Renzokuken or Irvine's normal shot.

Quickest way I've found is T
two players kept on yellow [Squall and Zell, I think] and the other as a healer [just in case] and summoner of Diablos.

Seriously, takes so little time this way.

I used a GameShark for uber pwnage.

But I'm assuming you want legitimate strategies so refer to Rapture's or Noobinabox's.

Renzokuken and Duel take too much time. If you do renzokuken, you might get one of those ridiculous ending moves that don't do all that much damage for the time it takes the scene to play out (unless it's lionheart).

Duel is time-based, and if you want to do a lot of damage, you'll need to be hitting the button combos over and over.

If you have Irvine's Demolition Ammo (go to the area closest to cactaur island to fight cactaurs on Disc 2, 1 cactus thorn = 40 demolition ammo) and you've gotten a few draws of Ultima from shumi village, each one of Irvine's shots will take off considerable health from the Cactaur.

It usually took me 2 of Irvine's limit breaks to kill a tonberry. Once you get Chef's knife, use Armor Piercing ammo (1 knife for 10 ammo).

I just used my GF's the whole way through.
I never use limit breaks.

How long did it take you to finish the quest?
It took me 30 min.

If you used GF's the whole way through...I believe the minimum time it will take you to complete is 1 hour (probably more).

If you spend the time to draw some Ultima for Irvine (at the Shumi Village) then junction it to his strength, each shot can easily reach the 9999 limit for each of his Demolition Ammo shots or Armor Piercing shots. Provided you have a few strength % increases junctioned as well.

When I fought tonberries, I killed in three hits. Two micro missiles from Quistis, and one turn of normal shot limit break from Irvine.

The combined time of those three attacks is about the same time it takes for Diablos to summon and attack. Furthermore, Diablos has to summon more than once to kill a tonberry. Max damage for any disc 2 GF is 9999. Tonberries have an average of 20,000 HP at the lower levels.

I use Quistis Micro Missiles twice and then keep using Zell's 'Meteor Strike' until the damage reads about 500 or more and then finish off with a couple of his regular moves.
Should you only have 5 seconds for Zell (which is fairly often), I finish off with a Renzokuken.

If you've already got the Cactuar GF, have one character use Kamikaze. (Note, don't do this once you've killed 17 or 18 tonberries, as you won't have a chance to revive that character before the TK battle).

Equip 100 ultima to attack on Squall and then get his health low. Shouldn't be too hard with that, especially if he does Lionheart.

Use Darkside on Squall and junction Drain to his ST-Atk. Doesn't work on tonberries, but it's almost cheating on most. My other chars average at 650 dmg, while Squall does 7000+ and heals himself in the process.

Seifer died to one Mug, Edea to three.
