I own all the of the games "Although I am buying a new copy of 8 this summer due to a small scratch (tear)" and I have talked my girl friend into sitting down and playing her way though one. I am wondering from you guys which you would recommend for a new rpg player as this will be her first full rpg.

For each game I would like a small summery of the storyline style cuz it's hard for me to remember it all (no spoilers please obviously) also your personal preference on how fast a person gets drawn into the storyline.

FF7: Cloud is the main character who is an Ex solder. He ends up fighting the main corporation that he was working for and it turns into a very complex save the world story with many twists.
Personally for me the game starts slow until about 10 hours in.

FF8: I remember very little of this game (once I buy it I am replaying it) essentially it is a long love story with and interesting battle system that is unique from most games in the fact that leveling up doesn't help really.
I got into this game quickly but due to my young age at the time of playing it when it first came out the boss battles were very difficult but that will be less of an issue now.

FF9: Probably my least favorite out of the 3 being the one I didn't finish (Playing after I beat 8) I will let someone else fill in a summery for this since I don't remember much.

Thank you to any contributions and advice on which one my girl friend should play. She has seen the graphics on all 3 of them and is very turned off by 7's graphics but I still figured I would throw it in here for good measure.

You need to show FFIX more love.

FF9, by miles.

It has the best characters, story and music. No contest.

Not 8, that's for damn sure. If you have her start off on that, I have but one thing to say, "...Whatever"

ok with that recommendation it looks like she will start with 9, and seeing the first four responses that doesn't sound like a bad idea :D.

Spelling out "for the win" rather than just using "FTW" FTL.

Vivi is massively overrated anyway.

It's true, you really cannot go wrong with IX

You know it makes sense. My mum bought me FFIX when I was about 11 and I had never heard of final fantasy or had played an rpg but I loved this game so much and I am now a huge rpg and final fantasy fan so IX is a good choice.

Seriously 9 is still to this day one of my favorites in the series.

I disagree there. Vivi was a charming character that was interesting to see struggle with such mature themes like the purpose of existence and how you spend the time that is allotted to you. There is more to it, but I think the character deserves its praise.

I think you're the one underrating Vivi.

No, I'm not. It's always Vivi this, Vivi that, Vivi on and on. I'm not saying that I dislike Vivi, nor I am saying that I don't find him a reasonably interesting character. But there were others that were more interesting and don't get nearly enough attention.

Strange though, I don't see this Vivi this, Vivi that and on and on you're speaking of.

The character does stand out a lot more than the others, but I wouldn't call this being overrated.

Overrated is Cloud Strife, Auron, and Sephiroth.

Just... not Vivi.

Also of note... "Always" and "never" are meaningless words.

Hynad, consider this -- Vivi is the only Final Fantasy IX character to date to make it into the Kingdom Hearts series.

Well you don't want to put characters that don't have the most appeal, right?

Agent0042

Mrm, whatever. In any case, despite what anything may seem, I don't want to turn this into a "Vivi is awesome! / No, he isn't!" debate. If anyone wants to continue the debate, feel free to start up a thread over in the FFIX section.
