I'm currently doing a "no-level" playthrough and I have just gotten to the point in the game where I gain control of the mobile Garden.

This is my second playthrough and I was curious as to the specifics of the Tonberry/Odin quest.

I wish to obtain the Tonberry GF without acquiring Odin because I'd prefer not to have a random killing machine hinder my no-level up game.

1. If I have fulfilled every other requirement for facing the Tonberry King, will I still need to defeat Odin in order for the King to appear?

2. Does your "tonberry-kill-count" get reset when you leave Centra Ruins?

I do not need tips of killing Tonberrys. I do not need tips on completing the Odin Sidequest. Please read my post carefully before replying.

Amazing double post just to make what you said in your first post a little smaller.

If you can kill the Tonberries quickly, then you should be fine and not have to kill Odin for the timer to go away. If not, then you'll have no choice but to kill Odin first, then go for the Tonberry King. And yes, the kill count of tonberries does reset when you leave the ruins. So if you need to kill one more then leave, you'll have to start all over.

That's not true, IDX. I killed 16 Tonberrries or so, left the ruins, saved, and entered again. 2 battles later, Tonberry King appeared.

That's odd then. Out of everyone I know that has done this quest, the kill count resets whenever they left the ruins.

Odd indeed. I was playing this game and I was using a walkthrough from GameFAQs.

Do this 20 times (or so), keep count of how many you've killed, and save outside
when you just killed your 19th. When you kill another Tonberry around this
number, Tonberry King will immediately show up to fight you.

That is from a FAQ by Absolute Steve. His FAQ can be found on GameFAQs. And he was right.

Ok, I can concur with Dubj. The kill count does not reset when you leave the area to save/reset the 20:00 clock.

Though, I'm thinking there might be different versions of the game that act differently when it comes to these little details.

Basically, I killed a few and left until I encountered the Tonberry King.

This means that it is possible to obtain Tonberry GF without getting Odin.

Thanks for all the feedback.

It's very possible it may be a version issue. I can't remember exactly what, but there was an instant where in the PS1 version of the game, if you did something then you'd go down in rank or something like that. But in the PC version, it was the exact opposite.

I always wondered and never bothered to try, what exactly does happen when the timer runs out? Game over? Booted out of Centra?

Odin basically calls you a pussy for not being there to battle with him. You then get "thrown out" of the Ruins. You don't die or anything. You end up on the world map and you can try again. I don't know if this affects your SeeD rank, though.

I can't remember exactly, but I know he says "PERISH BY MY SWORD!". But I could've sworn that you do die.

On the PS1 version (I don't know about the PC version) you do get a gameover even if you haven't engaged in battle with him if time runs out while you are exploring/battling within the Ruins.

Hmm... must be NTSC/PAL changes, then. Because I couldn't kill 20+ Tonberrys within the 20 minute time limit. Odin left a message and I was put back on the world map. I saved, re-entered and then fought Tonberry King. I didn't die when I was put back on the world map.
