I would love to get the Lord of the Rings (animated version) score...yes I know I know... the majority of the movie was terrible, but I really liked the score. I remember seeing in the late 80's early 90's a double cd score to this movie, and if I recall correctly it had a few bonus tracks from The Hobbit. It was in one of those big hulking double cases and had a painting on the cover that looked like words etched in stone with red lighting on them of the title (I think it was the same cover used on the double LP). I still kick myself to this day for not buying it. Anyone have this and know what I am talking about?

I have mixed emotions about this movie; I fondly recall it from my childhood so am happily nostalgic about it. However, as a trained animator there is a lot of godawful animation in it (the poor horrific rotoscoping). It does have its moments of brilliance, particularly being one of the first translations from book to screen, and LOTR is a particularly difficult book to translate. I personally feel the Peter Jackson movies would not have been as good as they were, if it wasn't for the animated versions treading that difficult ground first.
I say versions plural because there were two other Tolkien animated movies (but by different people and a different company) "The Hobbit" and "Return of the King" were done by Rankin Bass, and in my opinion were quite brilliant, the animation is extremely complicated and skillful. The drawback with these versions, is some of the character designs are a little too bizarre, however I feel these are much closer to the books even including some of the original Tolkien lyrics in some of the songs, and word for word dialogue from the books. Now Return of the King you almost HAVE to have read the book to understand it since it mixes up timelines, but overal is true to the book.
I hope you enjoy them, if you like those Rankin Bass did a wonderful Dungeons and Dragons/LOTR cartoon movie much the same style called "Flight of the Dragons" you may want to look up as well.

I, too, love the Rankin/Bass adaptations; I've been watching them since I was little. I was actually able to track down the LP soundtrack to The Hobbit about two or three years ago and I recorded them onto the computer. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to upload. It features some compositions by Maury Laws, all the songs--including Glenn Yarbrough's songs, which also includes one song that didn't make it into the movie, "Old Fat Spider" based on Bilbo's shouts of "Attercop" and "Tom Noddy" at the giant spiders.

And you gotta love John Huston's opening narrations. I love that they got him to do the opening narration for The Black Cauldron (which I also have a 'bootleg' soundtrack for on my computer).

I remember I used to get so angry at their choice of voice for the Lord of the Nazgul in The Return of the King. :)

HA HA HA ... Joe child of the 80's much? I would dearly love to have the Hobbit Soundtrack if you could upload it I would be much obliged. I really wish there was a soundtrack to Return of the King, and Flight of the Dragons (come on, The Last Unicorn got one for crying out loud!) I actually really like the continuing song about the evil of the ring in Return of the King, I feel that the animated version put across FAR better how the ring corrupts the mind, and that song just gives me chills. I just rewatched Flight of Dragons and Hobbit, AND Return of the King on youtube in one sitting last night LOL. One thing did bother me a bit about the Hobbit, and I am wondering about the dvd release because others commented on this too: some of the sound FX were changed, and I distinctly remember on HBO there being a scene where it shows the dwarves being tied up by the spiders, but on the dvd it jump cuts to bilbo waking up and the dwarves already cocooned. Do you remember in the earliest days of video when they offered The Hobbit as a "special offer for this timeless tale, now for you to keep on home video to show your children time and again"... HA HA HA ok I am showing my age now.

Yes I love Black Cauldron too, but this I KNOW has scenes cut out of it I very distinctly recall a Disney Sunday night movie thing on the making of the movie and they showed some scenes that are not in the home video release. I have some of that special stuck in my head; "...and to get the huuuge roaring sound of the cauldron explosion we recorded the sound of the space shuttle engines firing up"... " want to know how we make that ghastly sound of the cauldron born skeletons? Macaroni stuffed into a rubber glove, and then twist... * twists* listen... horrible isnt it?" Terrible the things that get caught in ones memory. Ahhh childhood.... Fliiiight of the Drrrragons... now see what you started?

Thanks I'm a Tolkien fan myself. I think the Silmarillion is better than LOTR . The only drawback of Tolkien is that his writing is very detailed, but then again that's a good thing too.

I know, I have often scoured the internet for a soundtrack to The Return of the King, but it seems quite apparent that there never was
one. Both The Hobbit and The Return of the King had some very memorable songs that I still find myself to this day.

Doooooooooom.... the Cracks.. of Dooooooooom... the Chambers of Fiiiiiiire.. the Fires of Doooooooooom.

And you gotta love Where There's a Whip :D And of course, Frodo of the Nine Fingers, and the Ring of Doom! Why does he have nine fingers? Where is.. the.. ring.. of.. dooooooooom :D

I also love Brother Theodore's Gollum. Of all the Gollums, his is the voice I quote lines in the most :D


I have The Hobbit DVD but I haven't watched it in about a year (for SHAME!). I will have to watch it again and check to see if those scenes were cut. But I agree though, I DID notice is that they chucked the original Sound Track (not music, but dialogue and SFX) and use a cleaned remastered version of the Sound Tracks from the second Record (along with The Hobbit soundtrack, the Record Case came with a second record that was the complete Sound Track of the movie--however it is missing some sound effects and this is how I realized that they used the LP tracks in the DVD because there were several parts where I remembered there being sound effects from back in the VHS days and they were left out--such as the sound as the Lake Men fire their arrows at Smaug's underbelly and the arrows hit but bounce off and we hear a neat ching-ching-ching sound as they bounce off; this is in the VHS version, but not the DVD or LP Sound Track). Very interesting.

Yeah I noticed their were some stuff missing from the movie. It is always a shame what is left out.

I've been on the hunt for the soundtrack to the 1980's version of the Return of the King and ended up finding only two places that have any chance of having it. One is Demonoid, which you can't register for anymore. The other was the link listed on this forum. The link says it is no longer valid after 100 downloads. I've been able to find the Orc battle song "where there's a whip, there's a way", but that is about it and it'd like to get the rest of the sound track. Is there another way to get a copy of the soundtrack anyone is aware of? Thanks!

I watched "The Lord of the Rings" cartoon by Ralph Bakshi the other day for the first time, mixed thoughts. I do kinda like Rosenman's score for it, it was actually one of the first scores I downloaded years ago, when I first read the books, before Peter Jackson's films came out.

I too am trying to find the soundtracks by Maury Laws to "The Hobbit" and "The Return of the King", any leads? I actually have the song album of "The Hobbit", but I really wanna find the 2-LP version, which presumably also has more of the score by Laws.

I also would love to get this score, especially if in some way possible in lossless. :)

Someone went through "The Hobbit" and "Return of the King" and downloaded all the songs, but presumably not the background music, and I downloaded the recording that he provided.
