We've had a bunch of threads appear lately asking for recommendations, and frankly, the sheer number of them is getting on my nerves.

Use this thread to ask for recommendations and to post replies to people have posted their requests in this thread. Be as specific about what you're looking for as you like. If you don't have any particular type of show that you want to see, just read the Favorite Anime/Manga thread and look for shows that look popular or something.

DO NOT use this thread to simply state what your favorite shows are. We have the Favorite Anime/Manga thread for that. I (and others) may or may not (more likely the former) mock you savagely if you do it.

Please don't reply to ancient requests. Check the dates on posts you're replying to and consider one week to be the cut-off point.

I hope I'm using this correctly but am looking for a recommendation for a decent recent anime series. I am just getting back into watching anime after slackening off for a few years, previously I liked shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom & Witch Hunter Robin and would probably like something in that sort of genre. Have been watching Persona Trinity Soul on youtube but any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'd definitely recommend Texhnolyze to you. I'm not a huge fan, but you might want to check out Ergo Proxy too? It seems in the same vein as the stuff you like.

Alright. <3

In all the years of my fandom, I've always been more of a gamer, and though I've been through a few animes the 'passion' never lasts, you know? I want something I can get hooked to if possible.

Animes I've enjoyed before include the Hellsing OVA, Descendants of Darkness [ Yami no Matsuei ], Kurau Phantom Memory, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and the older works of CLAMP [Angelic Layer, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Babylon], and Ouran High School Host Club.

I usually like the bloodier stuff, I'm not much for sap stuff unless it's got some interesting plot accompanying it.

I'm not interested in -
Naruto
Bleach
Death Note
Gravitation, Loveless.

Don't even bother with those. xD I know the last two are a bit out of place. I don't mind shounen-ai animes, just not those two.

Lol Prak I was just about to ask for an anime to watch. Think is I'm not sure what genre... better yet I'll just ask for all three I'm interested in.

Action: (This can include mecha-animes too. As I really enjoyed Evangelion and Gundam {forget the series}). I liked Gungrave, Cowboy Bebop. I'd like to see something along those lines.

Comedy: As the only one I've seen so far has been The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and I found that a breath of fresh air.

Detective (if that can qualify as a genre): something like Gost in the Shell

Can some one rec any good animes?

Jeff: I'll second Tengen toppa gurren lagann, it's fantastic.

Also, if you haven't seen them:

Black Lagoon
Hellsing
Full Metal Panic!
Berserk
Blood+
Ergo Proxy
RahXephon

Those are mostly action or action/comedy shows. In my opinion Haruhi is about the best the anime world has to offer, comedy wise. If you don't mind a lot of Japanese cultural references, I also think Welcome to the NHK is an excellent comedy.

You were super clear with recommendations, btw. I just don't check this thread enough. Hope at least one of those shows works out for you!

Any ideas on a good anime along the lines of 'Koi Suru Tenshi Angelique', 'Haruka Naru Toki no Naka de'. I like the reverse harem genre but it's so hard to find good ones. I've got 'Ouran' too, so any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Which anime has good romance in it?

Depends. What kind of romance are you looking for? School life, comedy, fantasy, loli-shota, mecha, yaoi, sci-fi? You might try 'Itazura na Kiss' or 'S.A. Special A' for the school, 'Ouran High School Host Club' for the comedy, 'Rosario + Vampire' or 'Fushigi Yuugi' for fantasy, 'Junjou Romantica' for the yaoi, 'Outlaw Star' could do for the sci-fi but it's not centered on it. I don't know of any loli-shota and most of the mecha I watch is ancient so... I hope that helps some.

jewess crabcake
06-27-2008, 09:11 PM
Heck Fate/Stay Night has a good romance in it. It's geared more to action but the romance is undeniable.

Sufijo
06-28-2008, 08:42 AM
Itazura na Kiss isn't so romantic as it is a comedy about what the main character hopes would be romantic. I love it, though. There's plenty of anime with romance in them-- you'd probably have to be a bit more specific if you want a certain type. EDIT: The following sentence became a run-on, so I'll make a list. There's stuff like...

Lamune, which is purely benign, slightly comedic romance
Myself; Yourself which is comedic, slightly mysterious and tragic (ended pretty nicely, though) romance
Zero no Tsukaima which is comedic fantasy (original sort of fantasy) romance-on-the-side
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora which is (very) tragic romance story
Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku o! which could be considered the legendary loli-shota/fantasy romance (just a year's difference, however)
Kimi Ga Nozumu Eien, the supposed "adult" tragic romance (in that the characters were adults, mostly; I didn't like this one)
Lovely Complex, the comedic shojo unlikely-pair romance (I did like this one, seriously)
Bokura ga Ita, the non-comedic shojo boring-as-nails romance
Ai Yori Aoshi, a slightly harem-like, comedic, unfortunately perpetually repressed romance (still excellent, though)

The list could go on. I was just trying to show some slightly varied examples with rare and common mixed in.

GTO is definitely on par, if not better, then melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya. And Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, is awesome as well, it's more action based but has a lot of "lmfao" moments. The stories of both of these were fantastic imo. I mean you'd have to try it yourself to see what you like.

I haven't really watched an anime since Hellsing (non OVA) and Gungrave. I enjoy mature themes and some blood, but dislike anything overly romantic. I don't like little kids as protagonists unless it stays mature. Any recommendations? Preferably something not currently on-going.

HMM, you might like Black Lagoon: The Action is crazy, there's is little to no romance, and it's pretty darn bloody. Even though you don't like kid protagonists I recommend Full Metal Panic!, the kid protaganist is pretty much an oblivious robot. The action is top notch. Most of the action is Mech-oriented. It does get pretty heavy on the romance side during the end, so I won't push it too hard on you.

I'm looking for some good family friendly anime. Twice a week, my family has a movie night, where whoever's turn it is picks a movie for all of us to watch and I'd like to show more anime, but my parents are really religious folks, and I don't want something that could offend them.
I showed them "Arashi no Yoru ni" and they seemed to enjoy it.
Now, family friendly doesn't mean it has to be specifically for kids. For instance, "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo," another movie my family enjoyed was apparently meant for teens, but there's really nothing in it that could seriously offend anyone, save for a brief reference to "jerking off," and I doubt most kids will get that.
Also, it doesn't have to be a movie. Something like a few episodes of a TV series or a 3 episode OVA will do.
(And yes, I know about Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki. While I do love those movies, I'd like to be a bit more diverse with my choices.)
Thanks in advance.

Anything by Miyazaki is good.

My personal favorites:

Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service.

There are more but those are the only ones I've seen. They are all magical, but not blasphemous magic, since you said your family is religious.

Eureka Seven: Pocket Full of Rainbows - I'd say it's pretty safe. Kind of action packed, at the end a female is missing her clothing, but there's nothing sexual about it. No TnA, just kind of...you can see a lot of skin.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals - It's something you'll have to download, I don't think it was ever released state side, but it's a nice take on the FF universe. Better than 'FF: Unlimited'.

Origin: Spirits Of The Past - Kind of a nature verse technology story with some drama/romance. Can't think of anything to 'bad' in it

Princess Mononoke - Again, minus some of the action and some suggestive language with a little blood...it's a really sweet story.

The Place Promised In Our Early Days - Friends become distance, a war starts. The story of how 2 childhood friends reunite across different battle lines to help another. Some action, but, again, can't think of anything too bad.

Cat Soup - Pushing it, a cat has an adventure. Feels like an LSD trip, some...strange scenery.

Voices Of A Distant Star - Some action, but a very cute/depressing love story across the stars.

Toki Wo Kakeru Shoujo - Girl gets power to travel time, uses it at first to fix small mistakes in her life; finds out that it does harm. It's like the movie '********* Effect', but with out sucks.

------------------------------
I really have to think on this, most stuff I watch has some blood/ecchi in it, or is longer than 3 OVAs.

I've watched some pretty messed up things...so I hope i'll be able to handle this...cliff hanger endings do make me pretty mad (D.Gray Man), but if it's continued in the manga I suppose I'll check that out too.

I really can't believe I'm doing this, but I'd appreciate a couple suggestions since I've fallen really out of touch with current shows. Here's my criteria:

-Must be fairly unique in themes or characterization. Interesting settings are a plus, but not required.
-I don't care how old it is. A lot of what I've watched recently and enjoyed are older shows (e.g. Scrapped Princess, Madlax, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid) that I never finished or just ignored before.
-Nothing longer than a single season.
-No irritating cliffhanger endings.
-The weirder or less predictable, the better.

Also, I will ruthlessly mock you if you recommend anything I know to be crap.

I've seen the vast majority of those. Also, I'm not really interested in movies since I'm looking to fill my downtime at work, which varies wildly from day to day. Also also, if you think something fits the bill, give me a bit of a description about it and tell me what makes it worth my time.

I recommend Mushishi. It's a mix of magic and medicine, it's like Miyazaki meets House. It's on Hulu for free streaming.

Xam'd of The Lost Memories

It's 26 episodes long, animation is fantastic, and Michiru Oshima is the composer. It includes subtle humor, and it's probably my favorite anime.

The drawing style is similar to Miyazaki. One of the characters (Nakiami) is based off of Nausicaa.

(No, it's not centered around fighting. There are very few action sequences)

I also recommend Kure-nai. It's similar to Seirei No Moribito, but shorter, with less darker undertones, and in contemporary times. It's 13 episodes long. The animation and soundtrack isn't up to par with Xam'd, but it's still good. Again it's not revolved around fighting, but it does have a few action sequences.

Huddog, you're probably better off making a seperate thread in this forum to ask that type of question. This is a thread specifically to do with anything anime movie/show recommendation related. You're probably more likely to receive an answer to your question there. ;) In future though, as a word of well meant advice, I would try to take a little more care when making your posts - as generally it's not appreciated around here very much when members make a habit of posting stuff in the wrong kinds of places.

I'll give this a go, Prak. I'm not as in touch with current shows as I'd like to be either, but hopefully I can give you a few good suggestions.

Allison & Lillia. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=8988)This isn't what I'd call weird at all, but is a good old fashioned adventure show. I don't consider it super predictable, but it might be easier to follow than what you're looking for. However, it's beautifully animated and has a real Studio Ghibli/older classic anime feel that I think you might enjoy.

Noein (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5887), in contrast, is full of weird, and is pretty wonderful. It has heavy sci-fi and time travel elements. The animation is a bit inconsistent, but it has some great action scenes. An added bonus to this is that it's licensed and available for super cheap on dvd. They also used to air it occasionally on the Sci-fi channel back before the name change.

Dennou Coil (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6278) is a show largely about advanced technology and a virtual world. If pressed to compare it to anything, I'd compare it to Serial Experiments Lain, but it feels a bit more light-hearted and character driven then that. I found the ending to be pretty satisfying.

Bokurano (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7213) will probably seem like a typical mecha anime at first, but it is pretty good at shattering expectations. It's a really unique take on a pretty cliched genre, and I loved the ending.

Planetes (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2654) is probably something you've seen before, but check it out if you haven't. It's a space opera type show and is very well done.

Simoun. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6287) I know it's pretty standard to just grab the first episode of a series to check it out. With Simoun, I'd recommend grabbing episodes one and two. The first episode is very exposition heavy and is fairly weak in comparison to the rest of the series. It's a sci-fi show in which people are born genderless but appear as female, and choose their gender when they reach adulthood.

Welcome to the NHK! (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6357) is nothing like the other series you mentioned liking, and is recommended because it's just very well written. It's a dark comedy about a hikikomori.

I'd also suggest checking out Noir and El Cazador if you haven't already just because you mentioned you liked Madlax.

Don't actually see how it was a stupid question. Nor how it was a sure sign that that new member wasn't interested in being part of the community. Even if that question did end up in the wrong thread by error. Still, guess your opinon and mine on that differ somewhat. Each to their own.

Not quite the type of recommendations this tread is ment for but it's better then starting a whole new thread just for this I guess.

What's the best edition of Neon Genesis Evangelion to buy?

I want the original 26 TV episodes, the handful of director's cut episodes, Death & ReBirth, & End of Evangelion all uncut and in the best Audio Video quality postable.

Several Best Buy's have:
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Complete Platinum Collection (Limited Edition Holiday Special)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GTFP1I/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000767QTA&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0N66258FT58Q1JR706QX

And my Barnes & Nobel has: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Collection
http://www.amazon.com/Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-Platinum-Collection/dp/B000767QTA

These seem to be the most resent releases of the series and for some stupid reason D&RB & EoE are out of print right now and probably will be until a Blu Ray release.

I think that's the same as your:
Barnes & Nobel has: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Collection

I could be wrong, but mine has both versions of a lot of episodes.
IE: Director's Cut & TV version of some of them.

The one you have "Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum: Perfect Collection" comes in a tin, has 7 discs and has the special features.

The one at BnN "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Collection" looks like it's the same as "Perfect" but comes in a slim pack, has only 6 discs and has no special features.

So are the special features worth it? If all it is are the audio commentaries by the english cast then I would skip it. I enjoyed the english dub but the actors themselves seem like pretty big idiots from the few clips of the commentary that I've heard.

Tanis
10-24-2009, 10:05 PM
In my version there are extra episodes and version of the such.

I dig having extended episodes myself and the commentary from the English is decent enough - sometimes even funny.

As a huge fan of the series I, personally, like my version.

I've recently finished Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star, currently watching Sora no Otoshimono as it's released. I need something with some action now. I've been thinking about Code Geass... No Bleach or One Piece, I don't have the patience for something that long. One or two seasons, tops. The last action series I watched was Eva, if that helps.

Tanis

'Desert Punk' has a good some good action; though it can be rather perverted & comedy based.

Code Geass has decent action.

Shikabane Hime has some really nice action in it.

Beautiful Warrior Grenader was ok for that

Blue Gender had some nice fight, though I don't care for the animantion style.

Ultimate Hellsing - nuff said.

After watching the first 12 episodes of Record of Lodoss War (though the 12th was missing 8 minutes or so >.<), I've reawakened my anime gene, and I'm after some others to look up.

My taste in anime is all over the board, ranging from Oh! My Goddess and Love Hina, to Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Martian Successor Nadesico to Cyber City OEDO 808 and Genocyber (I have broad range of taste in anime).

I'm after recommendations for any worthwhile anime to look for, though I admit I've got a taste for the fantasy style (Record of Lodoss War, The Twelve Kingdoms), I'm willing to look at other more contemporary titles. In short, I just want to get back into anime again so any recommendations would be helpful.

hi all, alright i want to know what animes are worth watching for someone at my age - 21
and the type of anime id like is that which is considered mature, and i dont mean hentai or perverted or w/e,i mean an anime where showing nudity or someone being killed isnt a huge issue,it can have romance, just let it be something emotional, not an anime revolving around sex,and im tired of all those anime's that are about some school girl or guy that happens to be a "chosen one" and some angel comes to live in his/her house etc.,its so clich

to let u know what im talking about ,here are the animes that i dig and i think are worth watching, some scenes even many times over :

Elfen Lied,Death Note,Higurashi no naku, Blue Gender,lunar princess tsuhikime,Kara no Kyoukai,Code Geass,Gantz,berserk,Basilisk,Ergo Proxy,Battle angel Alita,Ninja scroll.

i hope u get the gist, the anime doesnt have to have an all happy ending ,like berserk, code geass, elfen lied or tsukihime for example, such anime's really make me think.

1) Cowboy Bebop

2) Samurai Champloo

3)When the Seaguls Cry is made by the same guys as Higurashi I don't think it's as good as Higurashi but I haven't seen every episode yet.

4) The anthologies Animatrix & Gotham Knight

5) I'd say Neon Genesis Evangelion has both elements of what you discribe as things you do and don't want so it's up to you just make sure you see End of Evangelion after you see the series.

6) Read Or Die maybe

8) I haven't watched Big O in a long while but I do remember liking Roger Smith because not only is he an adult instead of a boy but also a gentleman.

9)I really want to see the Ghost in the Shell movie. Didn't much care for the series but I've heard nothing but good things about the movie.

10) I vaguely remember a movie that was on sci-fi called E.Y.E.S. of Mars, the ending was probably what your looking for but I can't remember anything but the end and don't want to spoil it for you.

If this doesn't help you I'm sure someone else can.

thanks Tom,il look those up,and btw i've seen neon gen,i was hyped up at the start looking at how soooo many people say it kicked ass,but i just couldnt get to like it because almost every single character in there has some mentality complex, kenji(i think thats the main kid's name?) is an emo fag,the german girl is annoying emo fag(typical my mommy didnt love me back),rei is like some doll, and commander ikari is ur typical stereotype boss guy sitting in his office with his hands tied together and shades in that "thinking position" ,but what killed me was the ending,in the series apparantly there IS no ending, cuz its just some..stuff. and the movie ending made me go "wtf?thats it?seriously?" i think the anime works for people who want to know as much as they can about mental complexities and human psychology.

Read or Die also i have seen 2 eps,it was so-so but im stalling it,cuz its too predictable ; the good guys win the bad guys lose as always, and basically the ending and the begining are the same, just that the world has a few less bad-guys or evil corporations, hell i aint even sure anymore it was long ago i watched it.

u talking about neon genesis or read or die?i cant even tell, for the record i watched all of neon gen's eps, sure there may have been some entertaining ones here and there, but it just isnt possible to like the show because it doesnt have anyone to look up to or feel awed, someone who can think of and say "kickass". like for example light/L in death note or Lelouch in CG.
In neon gen every notable character is a pansie/emo who is running away from their mental fears, such characters invoke disgust, not awe.

I watched Eva last year and having not been to impressed with the bits and pieces of it I saw on Toonami & Adult Swim I had no expectations 1 way or the other. I was merely looking for something to watch during munch time.
I was thrilled with it. Granted it definitely could have been made better after all, I didn't really understand what the hell exactly happened until I read through the EoE script, and then there's all the clip shows and still frames.

But for me it did something that no other show has done in a while, make me feel for the characters and care about their ultimate doom. It's kind of like Watchmen in the way the main cast aren't "role model heroes" and will probably doom use all but that makes their victories all the more important.
Sure I hated Shinji most of the time but also felt for him and even if Asuka, Rei, & Misato's fate didn't hang in the balance I still would have wanted him to pull through.

It ain't for everyone and there are some big problems with it here and there but I got something out of it.

P.S.
I ment the Read Or Die movie not the TV show which I found boring.

Also try michiko to hatchin. It's set in Brazil and is about a sexy black women who was framed for a murder she didn't commit breaking out and kidnapping her Love's illegitimate daughter (which was from another women) and trying to find him so they can be a family. It isn't the greatest end all be all, but it was fun and the end I didn't expect.

I'm looking for a new anime to watch but I'd like the setting to be a type of combat training school--a learning environment but not an ordinary school. Do you know of any animes with the ideas like: training, learning martial arts, a newcomer starting from bottom, competing students, etc. Most of the time the characters already know how to fight but I'd like more of an emphasis on training and learning (kind of like in Kenichi only with more students) The only example that comes to mind at the moment are the few episodes shown of the training academies for Konoha's ninja in Naruto or Bleach's soulreapers. And still those are bad examples since I want more of a fighting school than a force trained to combat a threat. If you know of any anime even remotely like this please let me know.

Could anyone recc me a good slice of life/romance anime to watch? I've watched most of the famous/common ones already like ef, clannad, honey & clover, Spice & Wolf etc. Anything would do, as long as it has a good plot lol.

Have you seen any of the following

-ARIA
-Hidamari Sketch
-Kimi ni Todoke
-Amagami SS
-Binbou Shimai Monogatari

If not, I implore you to check these out

-Aria, Binbou Shimai and Hidamari Sketch are mostly slice of life
-Kimi ni Todoke is pretty much half slice-of-life/romance
-Amagami SS is mostly romance (done in an interesting dating sim style where you win all the girls!) and the slice of life stuff is pretty fun.

1. Blue Drop
2. Witchblade
3. Shuffle
4. Birdy the Mighty

Those are the three I would recommendation for good story and character interacting.

(Spoil : Blue Drop and Witchblade ending is not for faint hearts)

I'm always looking for new ideas. My favourite animes are Azumanga Daioh, Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, and Air, with Air being my all-time favourite. Kanon is on my to-watch list, and I plan on watching it once I get my hands on the discs as it appears it's no longer on Funi's youtube channel. >.< While I really enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist and Full Metal Panic, I'm not looking for one of those this time around (and they are in my top animes). I guess I want something that has the comedy of Ouran or Azumanga, but has the deeper storyline of something like Air, if that makes sense.

You know I've been looking for something like this as well, but have yet to find too much on the subject. Ranma 1/2 has moments like this. The episodes where the main character, Ranma Saotome, is training are some of the best. And it's my favorite anime series, so you could give it a try.

While I haven't watched them myself, you could also try Eyeshield 21 (football, but they train ALOT), Baki the Grappler (martial arts tournament), and Hajime no Ippo (boxing). I've seen Ayane's High Kick, there's also that. And there is a bit of training in One Piece.

Clannad. There's two seasons, on Netflix. Definitely worth watching. I also recommend Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances).

If you liked Azumanga Daioh, you'll also like Yotsuba, and Nichijou. You might also like Lucky Star. And as a bonus, if you like cats, Chii's Sweet Home is just plain cute fun.

I haven't watched it myself, but Attack on Titan is all the rage right now.

There was also a new Berserk movie that was apparently pretty badass as well (and if you haven't seen the original, watch that as well)

Thinking of checking out Blue Gender.

Can anyone give me a lowdown on the show? Recently saw a preview of it and I like that kind of old school animation style.

Might just buy it in fact if it's worth it. There's a collection which includes the show and the movie for under $20.

I've seen the ads too, but that's all. Would be interesting to see if there's a positive response for it.

I started watching a lot of Anime on Netflix (UK), you know, try out a couple of episodes here and there. However, the only one that I started watching properly that is left on there is Ghost in the Shell.

Can anyone recommend any Anime that's in the same sort of genre as GotS? I'll look for them on ebay or in HMV.

Thank you!

I'm really enjoying Togari Boshi no Memoru. It reminds me a lot of A Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar. Does anyone know of any other cute anime like that?
