while playing ff8 a long time ago I remember using some kind of patch that converts the midi files to mp3 - I've looked everywhere but can't find it. so I wonder, is there even a sound patch or is my mind playing with me?

Probably.

If you want to convert the midis to MP3s, check the music forum. There should be a thread about that in there, I think.

You're better off just finding the soundtrack and downloading it due to the quality of the PC game's music (which is more on the 8-bit sounding side). As far as the patch you're talking about; I've never heard of it and I've been playing for a long time.

What do you mean download it? I want my in-game sound to be in .mp3 format - is it possible or not?

And I didn't find anything in the music section.

As far as your explanation goes you want me to download the music and listen to it through winamp? Or are you trying to tell me it's possible to replace the default music files with .mp3 ones which makes you get that sound ingame.

What sounds do you want? The sound effects or the music?

The music, ingame.

I have never heard of a sound patch for a game that old...if there is one im thinking it would cause more problems than it was worth

The music, ingame.
Then download the soundtrack if you must or buy it. I bought mine off of ebay years ago.

If you don't know how to download it, then we can continue this conversation through PM.

It's becoming clearer that I used a sound patch long time ago, just too bad none of you guys recognize it. :/ Virtualchan - why shouldn't it, people will ALWAYS return to a game like FF8, just look at FF7 - there's patches for everything.
I appreciate your help Rider but I think you misunderstood me, I want to change the ingame music ingame to a better quality one (example; ingame battle sounds will be high quality), not to just listen to it through winamp.

Ah, now I understand. So you basically want to replace the music with the better kind, right? Like removing the PC version of the music and replacing it with the PS1 version.

Either way, I understand what you're talking about (I too wanted to changed the music). And since you claim there's a patch out, I'll look for it for my personal use. If I find it, I'll let you know. And trust me, I'm pretty good at finding stuff ;).

Hehe that sounds great, I'll keep looking myself. I believe it is posted in a "tweakers" forum somewhere. Just don't know where exactly to look. :/

Maybe you're mistaken. The game does have sound patches, but only if you have a high-end-at-time-of-game-release hardware MIDI sound card like a SBLive, or AWE. These cards accept custom "sound font" MIDI patches to allow for changing MIDI instruments and upgrading of MIDI quality. Apparently it doesn't support sound fonts on newer cards like the X-Fi, since I couldn't get that along with 3D acceleration working on my gaming rig.

I guess I'm fortunate then because my computer is a dinosaur that can only play games that came out around 1999-2001 at its fullest capacity without any problems.

Yeah. And I'm purposely building a dinosaur just so I can play those games and older (I have with me a copy of The Bitmap Brothers' GODS. It hates Windows like the plague as it keeps BSODing Windows when I try to run it).

I did something similar. From here (aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/index.php) I downloaded a "patch," if you will, that replaced some of the music with some really good rearrangements based on the Piano Collections album and Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec. Much, much better than the original tracks. I highly recommend it.

Sounds great man, many thanks.

It happens to be that "Samuel Slight's Final Fantasy VIII DLS" was exactly what I was looking for <3
