BEFORE you say "Go to GameFAQs":

Okay, I've already beaten the game, and recently I was gonna use a FAQ or a guide and run through a completionist game of this the second time.

I did try a couple of ones on GameFaqs, but turns out they either are missing items or certain sidequests or secrets. Then there's the infamous printed guide relying too much on PlayOnline.

Now for all I know one of the many faqs on gamefaqs may be perfect, or there may be a perfect guide somewhere else out there on the internet but instead of going through every one, I'm gonna assume that there has to be at least several members of this forum who have once played this with a guide of some sort. So, can anyone here reccomend a good, solid, reliable guide?

Also, I was probably lied to, but I did hear somewhere that the FFIX part of PlayOnline was backed up somewhere under another official domain? Is this true? If it is, I'd love to know where.

Thanks,

~Zak

Thanks!

Do the keywords still work/apply though?

I tried them about 8 months ago and they didn't work.

At one time, they did work, even though the site hadn't been oriented towards IX for a long, long time. However, the most recent understanding I had was that, unfortunately, they don't work anymore.

I echo the comments about the BradyGames guide -- it's notorious for pretty much being a total piece of crap.

However, I still do think you could have good results by using some of the guides on GameFAQs. Your best bet would be to use a combination of guides.

The guides I recommend are the Moogle FAQ by Ornitier (which I have contributed to myself, heavily), the Chocobo Hot and Cold Guide by YSF (which has great info on the chocobo stuff, as well as a lot of side-stuff not at all related to chocobos), Looking through the general guides there, it looks like ATesta's is the largest and might be worth your time.

Good luck! Don't forget that if you have any questions, you can browse our extensive archives, or just start threads about them.

I can't stand that FFIX Guide. I had wondered why it was sooo skinny when I first bought it...

Thanks for the recommendations but by FAQs I actually meant walkthroughs. The sub-FAQs are good, which makes sense since they only have to worry really about one thing so they can't be that bad. I trust the sub-FAQs very well and have used them in the past (Esp. the Chocobo one, helped me loads), but it's the walkthroughs that I've found miss a lot of stuff. I haven't tried all of them though... AIex usually has the best ones, but I was surprised to find how much stuff his missed. Same with the other one up there.

Any particular walkthroughs you'd recommend there, rather than me going through each one? Which one did you use?

Or rather... haven't really checked it out yet either, but is the PlayOnline one (or rather the one in that link) as good and detailed with every secret as the book makes it out to be (minus the keywords of course)? If it is then that's great. But if you can pinpoint any good ones on GameFAQs or know of any elsewhere on the internet let me know!

By good I mean including every secret and every item/card found in those exclamation-mark locations and every way to get everything.

Thanks,

~Zak

Zak -- I believe the answer is I didn't. I used a combination of guides to make sure that I didn't miss anything. I used the sub-FAQs recommended above, along with a combination of my own exploration and anything else I could find. Here's a tip though -- you don't really need every treasure (unless you're obsessed with a "perfect" game), you just need enough to gain S Rank. And getting all of the cards shouldn't be too bad if you follow the Tetra Master FAQ.

But as far as the exclamation mark treasures go, I believe any number of those guides should be able to direct you to all of them. And as for the secrets, I think they're actually pretty much all listed in that "chocobo" guide.

Sorry to revive this thread (it was still on the first page anyway and it's mine) but I just thought I'd share with you guys... despite all the errored walkthroughs out there and the horrible book, it just so happens that the day I decide to start playing, turns out gamefaqs put up a new walkthrough JUST A DAY BEFORE (if that's not lucky I don't know what is), but anyway this walkthrough is by far the most perfect one I have ever read, and it covers every little thing I've seen the other walkthroughs miss, and lists other stuff I haven't been able to find anywhere as well. It also alerts as soon as sidequests are available, while most have them in a seperate section and completely ignore that usually. But anyway, this seems to cover everything every FFIX walkthrough online and in the book has failed to, and here it is: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197338/47344 I strongly recommend it to anyone who plans to play a perfect game of this (with the exception of Excalibur II). And it's not like it's old and been used a lot, it's from last week for crying out loud, it wasn't there when I first posted this thread a month and a half ago. So go on, tell me this revival wasn't worth it.

I suggest checking it out Agent before thinking about closing this... if you are at all.

Besides, this was a much better choice than posting a new thread just to advertise someone's walkthrough (even if it is perfect unlike others and was just posted last week).

No one will have to use a combination of guides again. And no, I didn't write it. :P

Erm... it's nice, but from what I can tell, it's hardly new... not according to the update history anyway...

Yeah, I know this FAQ writer. He's good.

Really? Maybe he fixed it then... on the main page it says 5/10/08.

The main page listing date is always the date that the guide was most recently updated, not that the date that it was originally published. I don't know what happened exactly, except to say that I guess you simply missed it before. According to the update history, he first published it to GameFAQs in March 2007, though he doesn't explain the reason for the 5/10 update in the update history -- maybe a minor spelling correction or something.
