The Anti-Existence

Which FF hero had the most tragic past and went through the most hardship before or during the game?

I've heard most people say Cyan wins this but I think Garnet is up there too.

At first he fell in love with Lucrecia, but she rejected his feelings for her and ran to Hojo. She became pregnant with Hojo`s child and Hojo was doing all kind of experiments with his yet unborn baby. As Vincent was interfering Hojo shot him and because of being afraid that Vincent is going to die Lucrecia injected him with Jenova cells [if I remember correctly]. Then he became a monster and had the ability to turn into Chaos. Later Lucrecia shut helself in mako crystals to prevent Sephiroth`s birth.
Because of the injection Lucrecia gave him he`s not aging and has shut himself inside a coffin in Shinra Mansion for 30 years.

I agree with Cyan. But I also nominate Galuf from Final Fantasy V and Captain Basch from XII. Eiko's worth considering too.

I'm no expert here but from what I do know, hard to beat Cyan IMO.

I wish to put forth Quina, Simply for the fact it doesnt know what sex it is, And is shunned by everyone even though its actually a great character.

It must be hard, not knowing, i think id like to change my vote for Quina, Even in the game he was shunned by the rest of the characters. Zidane was suppose to be looking after him, but he doesnt do much of dat, And i dont think i ever saw the rest of the characters talking to him/her much. They would always leave him/her behind.

I'm not sure I can go with Quina, though, because Quina always manages to be happy, no matter what happens to hir.

From FFIV, I would say Tellah, Edward Bard, or Rydia (for losing her family at such a young age).

Allen -- you don't always have to read a facial expression to tell someone's mood.

Quina: Something smell bad. I get bad feeling! Flower smell good! You smell flower!
Freya: Quina does whatever s/he feels like doing. I must learn from his ways.
Zidane: I don't think it's intentional, Freya.

Quina: Ah, Zidane. You want go with me!
Zidane: Well... I sort of got stuck with the leftovers...
Quina: You no have to explain! I so happy.

Generally the only time Quina doesn't seem to be happy is when s/he's hungry.

Quina: ...I no find good food on Terra. Maybe I eat eyeball over there...
Freya: Quina, hurry up, or you'll be left behind!
Quina: I happy we leave. No good food anywhere...

Shadow. Let me explain....

By sleeping at inns with him in the party, the player can learn more about Shadow's past through his dreams. Shadow was a thief named Clyde, who had a loyal friend named Baram, and they committed grand larcenies together. After they had heisted a million gil from a Doma train, they escaped down Barren Falls, where Baram was badly injured. Believing that he would never survive if Doma authorities found him, Baram asked Clyde to help him kill himself, but Clyde refused and abandoned Baram to an uncertain fate. Clyde crossed the Veldt and found himself in Thamasa, where a woman invited him to stay. Clyde settled down and begot his daughter Relm. But at an uncertain time later (later enough for Relm to be old enough to speak), Clyde abandoned Thamasa, and their dog followed him. Clyde started wearing a mask and became the Shadow known in the game. As these dreams are at times very abstract and English translations of the game differed more significantly in the past, fans have traditionally been divided in the interpretation of Shadow's dreams, including whether Baram may be alive, or died of his wounds or died at the hands of Doma, and whether the woman was Clyde's wife and Relm's mother, and whether the dog that chased after Clyde was Interceptor. No longer a question is Clyde's association to Relm, which was settled unambiguously in the GBA translation. Shadow has four possible dreams in the World of Balance, and one possible dream in the World of Ruin. In combination with Relm's possible dream in the World of Ruin (if Shadow was not saved from the Floating Continent), much of Shadow's past becomes clear.

Than again....Cyan's was pretty tragic. I won't say Locke, cause all he did was lose a piece of ass. Boo-hoo.

Freya: She lost Sir Fratley, only to find him and have him not remember her and trying at the relationship again knowing he doesn't remember a damn thing. Also, she lost both Burmecia and Clerya, and Clerya fell when she joined the sacred dance.

Rydia and Cyan hands down.

I also second the nominations of Galuf and Terra.

I personally don't think Vincent's past all that tragic - "cause all he did was lose a piece of ass," along with some freaky genetic manipulation there.

I agree with the aforementioned Rydia, Cyan, & Terra. Tifa's life probably wasn't the best either. Losing her mom at a young age, then her dad was killed, and her hometown was burnt to a crisp. Plus her new home in Sector-7 got fucked up too, I would have taken out insurance if I had been.

Basch is a good nominee. Serving a crime and being the outcast of society because of something you didn't actually do. He deals with great injustice.

I would have to say that Tidus has possibly the most troubling life.
