Hey guys,

Having just watched the whole Death Note Series (in JPN voice overs of course), all I can say is Wow. Though I really haven't seen many animes besides DBZ/Evangelion(great too)/Bleach, I was so darn hooked on Death Note. It's just such a smart and thrilling anime and I kept wanting to see what would happen in the next episode. Death Note pretty much showed me you don't need over the top action scenes to be a good anime (I know, I'm late to the party on that).

So now I am going all out to pursue more anime to add to my starting collection. But I want anime that has a great/smart storyline and characters (doesn't really need action in them, but it would be nice).

Any suggestions on some Anime I NEED to see?
Also, has the team behind Death Note created any other animes I need to know about?

so you want some 'thinking' anime eh? hamtaro is for sure what you are looking for. :D

lol idk. detective conan always got me thinking. it's basically deathnotes grandaddy! "this is how you solve a case you noob! get a little kid to do it! :D"

i had another one in mind but i forgot. something about a negotiator? i saw one episode only. and i'm not sure if it was "yugo the negotiator".

and finally, speed grapher MIGHT be along the same lines. i only saw the first ep and it might have given hints that it would turn out into a thriller or something thought provoking but not sure.

As far as anime's you need to see, I would highly suggest Naruto if you have not already seen it, Japanese voice only though. English voice acting killed it entirely.

Also, I really enjoyed Mai-Hime and Mai-Otome. Also, I am a fan of Wolf's Rain and Full Metal Alchemist.

Not exactly sure if that is the type of stuff you are looking for, but I love them all.

Did you even bother to read what was posted before you started typing? Naruto is the complete antithesis of what he was asking about. It's probably the last thing on earth he'd want to watch.

I actually really like the Storyline to Naruto, accept for the chunk of filler episodes, but hey, everyone has their own tastes I guess.

Nobody saw this one coming... -.-

The day this thread was posted I considered an in b4haruhi, too late now I suppose. I'm sick of people in general raving about it, whether it was good or not; there's a whole truckload of shows to suggest for different tastes and newer shows to try out. Protip: Haruhi isn't everything under the sun.

HOLY LULZ WACTH HARUHI MELANCHOLY SUZUMIYOO NAO BEST SHOW LOLOLOL

gee, it was so retarded of me to suggest the most watched and popular anime at this point in time to someone asking what anime they should check out.

If you want to argue, take it to PM. I have edit/delete buttons and I'm actually pretty keen on using them when someone gives me a good enough reason.

Welcome to 2006! Although I said people 'in general' for a reason, if you want to single yourself out, shoot for the stars.

From Death Note, NGE, it would be better to go along the lines of say:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

I would suggest something along the lines of Twelve Kingdoms, and also the first two seasons of Rurouni Kenshin.

If you thought Evangelion was great you can get Rahxephon too.

If you really want to make your brain melt get Serial Experiments Lain, and good luck with it!

I think Monster sounds perfect for you, then.

It is smart, thrilling and deep - and I mean, actually deep, with insights into darker sides of human nature.

The plot's about a genius neurosurgeon, Dr. Kenzo Tenma, who goes against the wishes of his hospital, and saves the life of a young boy, Johan, instead of his scheduled patient. When Johan grows up to be a charismatic serial killer, Dr. Tenma is forced to confront him, and by doing so, dig deeper into Johan's mysterious past.

lol Yeah I watched this too, its well worth a look.

Ive just finished watching Beck a few days ago. If you're into guitars, bands etc it wouldnt be a bad choice either.

If it's psychological horror type stuff you're looking for, I'd say Paranoia Agent and Elfen Lied are definitely worth checking out if you've not seen them already.

Also seconding the Serial Experiments Lain suggestion.

The Hellsing OVA, but mind the blood, gore, Nazis, and random blond molestation what not.

Kurau Phantom Memory, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, anything by BONES. Those are all really good. :3
