i have my ps3 connected to the internet and all, and of course i don't have to pay anything for it.

so i'm wondering, would FFXI work on my PS3, for free?

i doubt it... but it's worth asking. 0_0

FFXI does work on PS3, u just have to installed the update with ethernet connection, then you can play it using wireless. Note: u need a PS2 software update from the PS3 shop for free, and quality will remain as PS2's but it will be always be better than Wow.

Even though I have downloaded the PS2 software update i can't play FF XI on my PS3. Maybe it's because it's a newer model, but I've read something about SE planning to take FF XI to the PS3 directly, maybe It's a rumor, but I hope its true.

If you happen to live in England, Europe, Australia or any other country which has the letters 'PAL' written on the covers of games sold in those countries, then I'm afraid you will not be able to run the PS2 version of FFXI on the PS3.

This is because the PS2 version of FFXI was never released in PAL territories - it was Japan and US exclusive. So knowing Sony like I do, they would do everything in their power to ensure region lockout would stop you from running a US PS2 game on a European PS3. Additionally, as far as I'm aware, the PS2 version of FFXI is no longer produced and is regarded as obsolete by its publisher.

As I don't own a PS3 nor the PS2 version of FFXI (I play FFXI on the PC), I am not sure what your problem might be though, other than a software bug.

Somewhat related, I'd read SE announced they will finally go ahead and port FFXI to the PS3.

DJ, do you have a source for that please?

I'd like to check it out myself because I'd love XI to come to PS3. I could finally lose my MMORPG virginity!

Seriously though, if I didn't have such a shit PC I bet I would be hooked on WoW or XI already.

Thanks. I just read it and it sounds like it should be happening. I'm genuinely exited for this. I have always wanted to get into a MMORPG (XI or WoW being the obvious choices) but shitty computers, amongst other reasons, have always stopped me.

Maybe I'll get into it and be disappointed. But I'll give it a ago. It's a shame there is no actual date yet.

By the way, this made me laugh

OMG!!!!!! OMG! OMG! OMG!

MMORPG! FINAL FANTASY!

so excited… cant wait!

Free Realms will keep me occupied while waiting for this.

I dont care how shit it is… PS3 MMO+RPG made by square enix = perfect game

Lol, eh I thought the game was cool. Cool enough to sink a few years into.. Hard as hell though. WoW is a cakewalk compared to FFXI.

You'll have your pick of MMOs soon enough.... PS3 will get a lot. Like the DC comic game. Also, SE is coming out with a new one codenamed Rapture. I think they'll discuss it at e3. :D

Well since E3 is on right now they've shown what looks to be a sequel to FFXI in FFXIV Online. Cool stuff. Might want to save your cash.

Edit: It's official. http://finalfantasyxiv.com/

Hmmm, watching that trailer and the first images released it seems to be nothing more than a remake of FFXI. For instance, FFXI's races were shown in that teaser trailer (hume, elvaan, mithra, galka, tarutaru seem to be there), even though the world looks nothing like Vana'diel.

Even the FFXIV Amano logo seems to mimic FFXI's logo in appearence. So, is this just going to do nothing more than confirm those silly 'FFXI-2' rumours that were flying around a while ago? Either way, I'm going to reserve judgement on this until more information is released (there's nothing mentioned about story and setting at the moment other than that throwaway line that was pinched from FFXI in the teaser trailer).

I just hope Square Enix won't terminate FFXI service once FFXIV is released (or, if they do, maybe they'll move FFXI characters to the new game - as the FFXIV races seem to be the same that probably wouldn't be too hard to accomplish).

One thing though, is Uematsu seems to have returned this time around as main composer, which is only a good thing. :)

This best fits how I think of how they probably won't transfer characters from BG.

I'm fairly confident that most EQ players didn't quit MMO's altogether. They're still out there. So it's not like people aren't capable of moving on.

From a business sense why would you create a game that in its heart is a timesink and make it so a lot of your customers can skip a lot of time investment? All the transferring would do is make it so they HAVE to put out a LOT of content at the beginning as opposed to doing what every other MMO does: Allow the leveling to be early content to give them more time to design end-game content and other stuff.

They won't terminate a service if its profitting, FFXI will be on the back burner when this comes out of course, they can easily use old events per month now or not put them in at all, without much work from developors going into it by the time 14 is out, as long as there is anyone who still plays, we know there will be, it will carry on.

I don't think they would cancel a game they're in the midst of porting to PS3. XIV will most likely run alongside FFXI like EQ and EQ2 manage to coexist.

Edit: Confirmed during SE's Q&A this morning.

Interestingly:

-XIV is NOT set in Vana'diel although it uses the same races
-does NOT use PlayOnline although you can transfer your friendlist
-will have a public beta
-will NOT replace FFXI (citing another full year of content for FFXI)
-will use worldwide cross-platform servers
-might not be restricted to just PC/PS3

I read most of this picking through G4TV's liveblog: http://e3.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696020/Live-Blog-Square-Enix-E3-2009-Press-Conference.html
