Here's the list of battles and take note that we'll begin by the bottom. No special reason, other than I feel like it.

Alexandria vs Lindblum
Black Mage Village vs Gargan Roo
Burmecia vs Cleyra
Chocobo's Forest vs Desert Palace
Dali vs Conde Petie
Esto Gaza vs Chocobo's Paradise
Terra vs Gaia
Fire Shrine vs Earth Shrine
Fossil Roo vs Evil Forest
Gizamaluke's Grotto vs Chocobo's Lagoon
Ipsen's Castle vs Ice Cavern
Madain Sari vs Daguerreo
Memoria vs Oeilvert
Mognet Central vs Pandemonium
Qwan's Dwelling vs Iifa Tree
Qu's Marsh vs Pinnacle Rocks
South Gate vs North Gate
Water Shrine vs Wind Shrine
Mount Gulug vs The Crystal World
Bran Bal vs Treno

Bran Bal - The only Terran city we get to visit in the game, Bran Bal's main feature is a laboratory used to grow Genomes as vessels for Terran inhabitants. Zidane most likely comes from Bran Bal.

Treno - Reknowned for its arquitecture, Treno is the home of many Gaian nobles. Unfortunately, it's also home to countless criminals and a major part of the city is actually a slum. Main features include: an auction house, Doctor Tot's house on the edge of town and the river that runs below and through the city.

Don't forget the massive salt-lick.

But my vote goes to Treno. Musics way better and you get a lot more stuff there (examples: Awards from the Stellazzio, Awards from defeating the beasts in the Knights House/Weapon Shop, Auction House, Card Stadium(esp. in disc 4) and so on)

Ceidwad

Bran Bal. Treno was really cool too, especially in terms of stuff to do, but the design of BB was just brilliant. Plus I sort of spent too much time in Treno doing auctions and stuff, and that music gets quite annoying eventually.

It could be one of the vital ingredients to create KH2 Sea Salt Ice Cream.

Bran Bal

The feeling around Bran Bal gave me that really bizzare environment feeling as well as the place being quite unique to people who see the general type of FF town with the same shops along with a few differences.

Treno (9) eliminates Bran Bal (7) in a close battle.

Mount Gulug - Former home of the Mole race, Mount Gulug serves little purpose other than being the place where Kuja attempts to extract Eiko's eidolons and where Mog reveals herself to actually be Madeen. Hilda Garde isalso imprisoned there.

Crystal World - Inside Memoria, the party enters the Crystal and has to traverse a small distance in order to reach Kuja. As expected, everything is crystalized, even the enemies.

Water Shrine - Nothing much to say, except it was one of the four locations necessary to gain entry into Terra. Eiko and Garnet entered and, if the rest of the party's experiences applied to every Shrine, fought Kraken, although you never see this.

Wind Shrine - See above. Vivi and Steiner took this one and faced and defeated Tiamat, who was just beginning to prove what a colossal pussy he actually is.

South Gate - To Cinna, this place only means Bundt Cake. To the rest, it's a massive passageway that separates Lindblum's territory from Alexandria. It's heavily damaged during the very first disc, when a malfunctioning Black Waltz #3 crashes his ship against it.

North Gate - Visited but never crossed, this particular gate separates Alexandria and Burmecia. During a visit, there's a mention of a bloody battle on the other side, although this is never exactly expanded upon or even mentioned ever again.

North Gate only because it's more relative to FFXI what with war banners and that battle going on on the other side where mass killings is present and near tangible here and not anywhere else in the game aside from the siege of Lindblum with Atomos cinema. Personally there weren't enough rats in Cleyra to constitute an ingame populus.

Qu's Marsh - Found in three of the four continents in the FFIX world, these marshes are worth visiting for the frog-catching minigame, which yields many rewards. Quale, Quina's master, resides in one of these. You can also find the know-it-all mog in any of them, should you require freshening up on the tutorials.

Pinnacle Rocks - Here, Ramuh invites you to play a minigame involving the retelling of a FFII section, at the end of which you receive your first eidolon that you're actually able to use. Nothing much here apart from that but it is a very pretty location, with lots of water and vegetation.

Quan's Dwelling - Near Treno, this cavern served as home to both Quan and Vivi, who Quan was apparently growing so he could make a meal out of him. It's also here that Quina and Quale learn what it means to be a gourmand and where Virgo and Scorpio met, as evidenced by the story told in the Stellazio coins, two of which can be found near the spring inside.

Iifa Tree - The "back of the tree", as Garland puts it, this beautiful location is perhaps the most important in FFIX, serving as the waste disposal system for the discarded Gaia souls, turning them into Mist. The physical manifestation of the tree extends its roots all over the world and, while only affecting the Mist Continent in the beginning, later in the game it exhales Mist all over the world.

Memoria - Another side of the Iifa Tree, this place is comprised of the memories of the inhabitants of Gaia, as evidenced by scenes dating back to Gaia's very early days, such as a large ocean covering most of the surface. Memoria is also the final dungeon of the game.

Oeilvert - Bad juju if you're a magic user, Oeilvert is located on the Forgotten Continent and houses several planetarium-like rooms, where the history of Terra is unveiled to the party. As mentioned, magic is forbidden in this place due to the anti-magic field around it.

How is it "another side of the Iifa tree"?

You enter Memoria through the portal above the IIfa Tree. I don't think it was just a random location chosen for it. Without the IIfa Tree, there probably would not have been a portal to Memoria. I calls'em like I sees'em but everyone is free to correct me when I get something wrong. I appreciate it.

Anyway, Memoria takes this round (11). Too bad for Oeilvert (6).

Madain Sari - Village of the Summoners, now inhabited only by a few Moogles and Eiko. It's a desolate, ruined location but there are hints everywhere that it could've been quite beautiful before.

Ipsen's Castle moves on (8).

Gizamaluke's Grotto - Since reaching a new location and advance the story can never be too easy in accordance with the laws of the universe, FFIX throws Gizamaluke's Grotto at us, a, you guessed it, grotto filled with passages and doors requiring special bells to be opened.

Chocobo's Lagoon - Upon toiling for your amphibious chocobo, you get to visit this place, hidden on the side of a small island. While similar to the Forest in that you have to dig for the chocographs and assorted treasure, the Lagoon's accessability to the aforementioned rewards depends on whether you have a River chocobo or an Ocean chocobo.

Nice getaway even if it is noticeably ill lit. Gizamaluke's Grotto was depressing and strangeley arranged.

It's got a mine when you first walk in..but then the large bell in the middle before fighting Gizamaluke adorns a chapel?

The artwork and music there perfectly captured the emotions that Freya must have been going through when you go there for the storyline event. Also, the Moogle/Kupo Nut scene was super.

It's a tough call though as Chocobo's lagoon complmented the Forest well as an alternative location for the Choco Hot & Cold minigame.

The Grotto but it's a close call. Out of all the chocobo locations, I feel the Lagoon is the best because you get that feeling of realization when you dig a new Chocograph, probably because it's harder to dig something out of the water.

The Grotto is just fun; you get the moogle couple, especially the kupo-crazy male, a great place to level up and commit suicide if you feel a bit under the weather and a good dungeon overall. And Gizamaluke only adds to the fun.

Fossil Roo: Tunnel that connects Mist and Outer Continent. Can only be found in Qu's Marsh if Quina is in the party. The really only exciting thing about this place is the fossil/treasure digging mini-game; even though the rewards aren't that great. Can only be accessed during the storyline.

Evil Forest: Giant forest in valley below Alexandra. Again can only be accessed during storyline. Garnet captured by giant plant. Vivi captured by giant plant. Blank petrified.

Sorry if I can't come up with a good description for Evil Forest but whatever.

Next Round:

Terra vs Gaia

Terra: The twin planet of Gaia. Assimilates other planets to survive. Almost all life was wiped out when it failed to assimilate Gaia or something along those lines. You played the game you should know this. Garland and the genomes ya-da ya-da. Trance Kuja destroys it in the end. Can only be visited during the story line.

Random Encounter: Hecteyes

Gaia: Main planet/world map for the game. 4 continents. Mist, airships, etc. 6000 years old, which is relatively young. Garland created Iifa Tree to speed up assimilation process so he could bring the souls on Terra out of suspended animation.

Hawkeye, you might want to consider using my tiebreaker method. I'm pretty sure that's what Espanha was doing, and I've found that it always gives good results.

Simply withhold your own vote for the entire first round so that when ties do happen, you can simply vote for your preference to break the tie. After the first round, switch to a percentage-based system to let performance in previous rounds break ties, which also lets you vote from that point on.

Hawkeye_1138
03-25-2008, 09:55 PM
I was thinking of doing that, but I think that way is too bias(the self vote part not the percentages/total previous votes things). Even if I had done it that way I stil would have voted for the Fire Shrine.

Erebus Wraith
03-25-2008, 10:16 PM

Terra was really cool but there wasn't enough there, where as Gaia has so many cool moments it in. If the story had spent more time on Terra I would have picked Terra instead.
