The Phantasy Star Universe Soundtrack, as mentioned to be uploaded since shortly in an other thread, is really huge and epic in my Opinion. Tales of Legendia OST is also epic and very various in its themes.

Shadow of the Colossus.

that's like, the epic ost of the epic osts. i've never played the game. i fear that a game that is not the most touching, engaging, awesome, goosebump-inducing game i have ever played, might ruin the music for me.

for recent epic music, try blue dragon and lost odyssey.

In my opinion, what makes epic battle music is the memories and feelings attached to the song from the game, music by itself can be good, but tie it in with the characters and story and you have something truly epic.

Call of Duty 4 has some pretty epic music though.

Fable was a very good OST, idk if it qualifies as epic however that depends on the listener I suppose. Also KOTOR I has a very wonderful soundtrack, I would call that one epic :D

Definitely the Soul Calibur OSTs, especially Soul Calibur II.

Kingdom Hearts OST (complete box especialy) is another epic soundtrack.

The Suikoden series, particularly for 2 and 3, have some satisfactorily epic pieces, mainly for the openings.

Xenosaga has a few pretty good pieces as well, like Xenosaga I's "U-TIC System" and "Gnosis" and Xenosaga II's opening composition.

I'm not sure if you're counting music like this, but Clint Mansell's score to the film "The Fountain" is simply amazing. Princess Mononoke has some very sweeping, epic songs as well.

Surprisingly enough, the Gears of War soundtrack is fantastic. It captures the feel of the game perfectly, while communicating a bit of a heroic, emotional quality that was not displayed in the game. Plus the way the instruments interact with each other is unbelievable.

Also, if you can find a good-quality version, Beyond Good and Evil has a great OST.

God of War (both of them) are the most epic osts that come to my mind.

Devil May Cry 4 (buy the game and listen to the music) is another close one.

Totally agree. Be it beating the final boss of a game, or an epic battle in an anime, its the flashbacks of the scenes and emotions you got while watching/playing that makes listening to the song even more personal and through that it becomes epic.

Indeed, a song can be good on its own, but it gets to a whole new level when you have an emotion attached to it.

Why do people buy soundtracks? Its not only for the music, but also to relive the feelings/scenes to which the songs were used in, thats what I believe.
