ok, well, i just finished watching the movie and i still haven't decided if i'm pleased or not. it was pretty faithful to the book, but some parts seemed a little rushed. also, if a person hasn't read the books, it may be a little confusing, as they don't really explain what a daemon is. the ending annoyed me a little, but i won't say why because no spoilers.

all in all, i'd give it 3 out of 5 stars

Hmm, that's really weird since the daemon thing is presented on their website.

I am planning to see this film, and I'm glad to know that they've stuck close to the original plot.

What I don't like is that they're comparing this to Harry Potter. Since when did HP become the reference point for all fantasy related material?

I have no idea, kamodian. Imo, the his dark materials trilogy is so much better than the Harry potter series. The plot has more depth and it's developed incredibly well.

Now, u'm not saying that Harry potter is bad; I actually think it's good. I like the series. But I just think that the golden compass, the subtle knife, and the amber spyglass are better.

I saw the movie earlier tonight. Thought it was alright. Didn't feel disappointed at all because I forgot a lot of stuff from the books. Also, viewed the movie with an open state of mind.

Overall the movie disappointed me. I mean I liked some parts, especially the score and the stylistic influences, but they seemed to try to condense the entire novel into a two hour movie and not worry about certain chapters or significant events in terms of the plot; which left them with a rough, cut down version of what was in the book. That, and they turned reading the Alethiometer into well, I'm not going to spoil the nausea-inducing fun for anyone else.

maze, i totally agree. it sort of ruined the magic of the alethiometer. like, when i read the book, i imagined that the needles turned themselves. like, i imagined lyra just looking at the alethiometer and going into some sort of trance, thinking of of the question. then, i imagined the needles spinning and going to the symbols, showing her the answer.

Well, the alethiometer does have three hands/needles that can be controlled by the person reading it, it's just the last one, the big one, that moves on its own. It's just what they did to the reading of it that annoyed me. I didn't really like their treatment of the Daemons though, or the fact that when someone dies their daemon turns into dust. In the books it just says they sort of fade away and disperse. It would have been better for them to simply keep the same effect but rather than turning into Dust, which humans can't see, just have the particles be Daemon bits.

Forgive me for not going out, buying the book, and answering this question without sounding dumb or annoying but:

Why do the say that daemons can't be touched with bare human hands but the in the facility where the G.O.B.blers seperate the kids from their daemons, when Lya? gets caught eavesdropping on her mother talking about Lord Alkes? they wrestle her away and also her daemon, but without those little white gloves during their discovery of them before going into the seperating device room?

Arcanine, it's not that a person CAN'T touch another person's daemon, it's that they SHOULDN'T. it's taboo in their world; daemons are very private and personal. it's as if someone grabbed someone else's child in our world.

Meh, the one in the book is more kick ass. It involved the eating of hearts and the forcible removal of tongues.

the whole film was a disappointment, they really should have made it three hours as they needed this time to explain things. it really felt like they were aiming the film at an audience 4 or 5 years younger than the book's audience. also they completely ruined the ending of the book to make it more hollywood, or some bullshit

I loved the books und i think, the movie is a good adaptation of the first novel.
A movie for kids of course, but with very nice shots, effects, cast und music.

I finally found the time to go see the movie!

Now, I have not finished the book, but I thought that this was a really good film. I think the elements played out very well for both adults and children audiences, and that the balance between action and story was done quite nicely. And it sets up the next part of the story without making the end seem too rushed - I don't mind a little Hollywood cheese.

I'm not sure why people put so much emphasis on comparing the original book and film adaptations. I mean, people loved LOTRs adaptation (probably due to the fact that the books were confusing, boring, and introduced/forced on to us in classrooms).

As a standalone product, this one is deserving of a spot in my DVD collection later.

Good fight scenes but it felt like the movie dragged on the entire time. I'd just give it a 1 star.

It was...okay. I mean it wasn't terrible or anything. The book's usually better (which it was). But I have a question. Did they aim this for kids? Because I'm pretty sure some of this stuff wouldn't be understood by kids.

Now, I have not finished the book, but I thought that this was a really good film.

thats exactly why. if you had finished the book (or better yet, the series) you wouldnt think it was that good of a movie.

I've actually been slightly tempted to read the first book, but only out of morbid curiosity. The only enjoyment I'd be likely to find in it would be from the "lol this guy is a wacko" factor. And of course, that's not enough to make a skinflint like me part with his cash.
