Does anyone have a subscription to a gaming magazine? Does anybody have recommendations for a good one?

I kinda looked into the 'Electronic Gaming Monthly', but I just want to see what other people have to say.

edit: since magazines are kind of limited (I've decided to go with EGM's $1/month subscription), I've decided to broaded the scope for discussion. How do you get your news fix?

If your into nintendo games a lot, then I would definately suggest nintendo power. My brother has a subscription to it and I like to look through it when he's done reading it.

But they only have nintendo games in there so anything else you would probably need to look somewhere else.

The only one I even bother reading these days is Game Informer, and then only because my brother subscribed to it. Honestly, it just isn't worth it if you have easy access to all the gaming sites on the internet now.

But just so you know, you should avoid Gamepro like the plague.

I used to get the Official Playstation 2 magazine, because of the demos and the hilarious letters and reviews.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! I do want something that covers a bit of everything, and not just one one specific system.

It does seem that way, doesn't it?
After finding the internet really distracting, and RSS feeds just making it even more addictive, I'm going to try and see if I can get my fix another way (at least for one of my interests). Limiting the gaming news to one magazine a month, instead of hourly checking, should give me some extra hours during the hell seasons of school.

Thanks for the tip to avoid GamePro.

I read GameInformer because I get it "free" with my GameStop membership thing (sorry, Ktulu :( I like browsing used games =/). I used to like Joe for being a Square whore like myself, but honestly I think it has become a liability, or more accurately, I've started to sour to his shenanigans.

I predict a Retroscore of 10 for VII, if it hasn't already been done, or if it wasn't already a 10 when they reviewed it the first time.

Just ew

Me too. I read it for a while when my little brother got himself a subscription. As far as I'm concerned, it's the least of the magazine evils, but that doesn't say much.

Also, for the OP: I would hesitate before going after anything "Official." I'm not saying "AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!1!" but at least snag an issue from the newsstand to see if it's worth your time. In all honesty, though, I can think of many better things to do with that money, especially since it's so easy to get all the news and such for free on the interweb--not to mention preview trailers.

I liked Electronic Gaming Monthly because of the posters, I don't know if they're still printing those in USA but in my country EGM posters are done for.

I actually have a review of VII in an old PS1 mag, where it got 10/10 in every single category

What are the usual categories that game reviews should have? Having details would be nice - do alot of them rate sound/music, or do they usually stick with the general gameplay/story?

I'm kinda interested in EGM and GameInformer right now, but any other suggestions are welcome.

I don't subscribe to any gaming mags, only browse them at magazine stands. And I read everything to get an even picture.

I believe the PS mag is getting a makeover for rerelease next year. Also, I've added a poll for general gaming news sources.

my older brother used to get nintendo power magazine way back when, but not anymore. Occasionally I'll just go buy one at the store, but I don't subscribe.

I don't subscribe to it, but I do often pick up Famitsu and its Playstation and Xbox 360 spin-offs for gaming news and generally amusing reads regarding upcoming events and games. If there's people I know in them, too, I'll get them.

ditto what locke said about nintendo power and psm. i had nintendo powers for a good 3 year or so. and psm for 1 year i think. i had to stop because of money cause kids never really have any and parents don't like to spend anything on what they find useless and a waste of money. so that suxed cause i used to read each magazine front to back completely back then.

after a few years and getting my own money, i tried to get back into them thinking i would enjoy them as much now as i did back then. and was surprised when i dind't really care for them anymore. either i grew out of it, or i get my fill of "gamer talk" online. not sure.

my only reasoning is back when i used to love them i never had a pc, so i guess that was my thing. now that i got a pc, that's my thing. so idk.

in an effort to try to get that joy back from magazines again, i gave a few subscriptions another try. this time using publishers clearing house to save a ton and i got the following:

PC Magazine
Games for windows
Game informer

i've been getting them for almost a year now..and barely read any at all. so i think i'm gonna stop trying now. i guess i just grew out of it.

I forgot to mention Tips & Tricks. Though, I only like their 'Collector's Closet' and 'Japan Report' sections. The 'Rooms of Doom' were cool too.

Is Tips & Tricks still being published? Also, I saw a copy of GameInformer today at the Rideau, and on the cover was a big splash of the Ghostbusters logo. Is there going to be a Ghostbusters 3 movie, or is there only going to be a game?

edit: check out Thread 47343 for Ghostbusters news!

I'm not sure why, but that makes me a bit sad. What sites do you usually check out now?

Ghostbusters - The Game is coming out, and it's been said that it is also going to be a sequel to Ghostbusters II.

none. that's the sad part. ;_; i lost interest in reading anything game related altogether. maybe i should try nintendo power again. it's the only mag i ever read front to back.

i think the main reason now is because they keep talking about games in systems i dont' own. and i don't like looking at that cause i can't ever do anything about it. i can't rent them, or buy them. so i guess that's why i never bother.

I had that guide once. I STILL have the original game, in it's original box, with it's original book, in perfect condition, too.
