I just found out that there's going to be a new star trek film set back in the old days of captain Kirk et. al.

Its not that I'm all that excited about it or anything but Simon Pegg is going to play scotty. WTF?

Yea...I don't think anyone can take him and will take him seriously, even if he's in a serious role. He's sorta 'tainted' himself with his previous comedic roles which most folks know him in. But only time will tell if he can pull it off. Depends I guess on how the tone of the film will be. A pure action romp, or something sorta funny sorta serious like TOS.

It really a big task to fill the shoes of William Shatner, James Doohan and
DeForrest Kelley with other actors - which will be accepted by the audience.

tainted himself?! he's a comedy actor he's supposed to be in comedy roles. i reckon he'll actually be really good in star trek as he's got some amount of talent.

Aww, come on.. the casting's not that bad. I saw the teaser a while back, and it looked good. Though I expected more. Ah, well.. guess we'll have to wait for summer for the full trailer.

I do like the movies, and I'll go see this one, but I'd really like to see at least one Voyager or DS9 film, but we all that's never going to happen. :notgood: :mad:

Realistically with J.J.Abrams behind the film I think this will reinvigorate the Star Trek genre and possibly lead to a few more films.
From what I can see this new film will probably be one of the best films yet.
However I don't think that it will outshine The Undiscovered Country & First Contact.
In my eyes those were the best two films with The Wrath of Khan & Nemesis sharing a spot for 3rd on my list.

From what I can interpolate from reading a recent interview with LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge: TNG) he said that he would not be hesitant in doing one more Trek film based in the TNG era, but another interview with Brent Spiner (Data: TNG) has him saying that there is a possibility of the TNG era being over.

im a nerd, but i REALLY hate Star Trek. i don't know why. and i just don't see the point of remaking such a classic series. it will just take away all the originality of the real thing, put some kind of modern twist on it for the audience, and give and extra pay check to everyone involved in it. why can't people just let a series just die out? not everything has to be brought back!

anya29, although you make a valid point, there is still alot about the Star Trek universe we do not know about entirely.
Although there could have been a far better choice for a movie setting, than before TOS (The Original Series), got underway.
I think that with such a wide range of diversified acting talent the film might just be successful enough to allow more interesting subject matter to be dealt with at a later date.

i hope so. i'd hate to see Star Trek's last movie be a failure. the series deserves a good film.

And what exactly do you mean by "deserve a good film", At last count the series has had 5 really good ones (The Undiscovered Country; First Contact; Nemesis; The Voyage Home & The Wrath of Khan), whilst The Search for Spock; The Final Frontier; Generations & Insurrection all are quite good also.
And THe motion picture wasn't that bad either.

oops. i forgot about Star Treks other movies. like i said, i'm not a huge fan. i just know that there are huge fans out there, and i hope they won't be let down. i think i have seen one of the movies actually, but i can't remember what it was...

But on topic, Star Trek has been very hit and miss for me over the years. I have boundless love for some of the shows and movies, but would be perfectly happy if others would disappear forever. This movie looks like it's probably going to fall into the latter category. There's just no point to revisiting ancient history when they could get away with doing something neat like making one-shot Star Trek movies, each with a new ship and crew. Why should I get excited about boldly going where the source material didn't quite go due to the technical limitations of its time?

I'm really curious to see how Simon Pegg performs in the role of Scotty. On one hand he's a pretty brilliant actor, on the other hand... well, he's Simon Pegg. I do agree with Prak's point, I don't see any reason to revisit the TOS-crew at this point. I'm sure the movie will be easy on the eyes at least, if not a little lacking in everything else.

I only thought that Final frontier was good because of the subject matter, Albeit, Bill could have directed alot of the film with much more care and consideration, but it was a film taken in a direction that so few Star Trek episodes had touched upon and that is the realm of religious metaphysics.

Nemesis was good, because of the sense of resolution towards the whole Romulan issue, you could finally start to see the walls being torn down between the Romulans and the Federation (not that the Dominion War was anything concrete) that and you saw Data at his best.

Regarding the new film, I hope it does do well, it might secure further movies in the future and even more, with head DS9 writer Bryan Fuller, hinting at championing a new series on Television.

Enterprise flopped because it was designed poorly and incorrectly, it tried to combine the themes of DS9 and TOS in one series which is impossible in that the two are practically polar opposites. That and it was also much like James Doohan thought of early TNG, in that it was just kids playing with their parents toys.

From 1987-88 - 2004-05 Star Trek graced our Television screens and attempted in its heart of hearts to involve us and allow us to individually experience all of its nuances with out fear of rejection, but when Enterprise left our screens in 2005, a certain aspect was also lost, and there was a big gaping hole in the TV universe. TV needs Star Trek as do Movies Theaters worldwide. 2009 is, to quote Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania XX (Sunday March 14th 2004) for those of us keeping score, "Where it all begins again."
