Ok, i know chances are there has been a thread pertaining to this before, but im new and just need to figure this out. I have seen all of the evidence pointing to Laguna being Squalls father. Yet what about Greiver? Squall has the Greiver ring, and Ultimecia has the Greiver summon. So could someone please explain the connection between Squall and Ultimecia to me?

Well, you see Bizzaro, there are people out there who think that Ultimecia is Rinoa from a distant future. You can see the thread about it (Rinoa=Ultimecia?). It is only an assumption.

Many have assumed also that Squall in his earlier boyhood already possesed Griever, but because of that, he lost his memories of having it. The ring is the only thing that reminds him of it... I prefer the first theory. It kinda makes FF8 a bigger game than everyone think it is, even though it is a baseless theory...

Does there have to be a connection, though? I mean, one is a ring, the other is a living being that looks like the ring. Ultimecia is one hell of a sorceress apparently, so she would've known Squall had a ring of Griever and idolized the symbol so maybe she figured summoning Griever himself would make Squall quit trying to defeat her or something.

All I'm saying is a connection between the characters doesn't necessarily have to exist and if the game doesn't provide hints or facts to said connection, I say you're looking too much into it.

There's no connection between Squall and Ultimecia. Squall just happens to have a ring with the "strongest" GF in it, which is Griever. And Ultimecia just happens to have the ability to summon Griever.

Well, I guess it sounds reasonable... But what I don`t understand is why did Ultimecia know that Squall is the one who will fight her. Remember when she says out of Edea`s body:"So you`re the legendary SEED destined to fight me...?". How does she now?

Probably because of Time Compression, which allowed her to see the past, present and possibly future.

Griever is a "legendary beast."

It's like if one of us were to have a sasquatch ring, or loch ness monster pendant, or something.

Why put it in the game then? Surely then what she calls the "ultimate GF" could be some awesome badass GF that WASN'T called GF and didn't resemble a lion. Why the Square decide specifically to call it Griever?

Because "Lion" would have just sounded silly.

To make people like you look too much into the game and come up with crackpot theories.

I'm a journalist baby, its my job to come up with bullshit theories.

Anyway, I'm aware Rinoa isn't Ultimecia in the canon plot. But I really think she was originally and they just took the plot point out some where during production.

I thought it was to report the facts, but hey, who am I to argue? You're the journalist, after all.

No its entirely correct that journalism is to report the facts (to a degree, it kinda warps the deeper you go in, you should read the Daily Mirror more often...).

But I think slight self mockery is perfectly allowed on the interbutt?

Well I know that Laguna is squalls father almost with out a doubt which is kind of shown in the game so I am going to look for facts in the game to all possible connections even though I haven't found any in the first 5+ times I've played the game but it would make sense for there to be a connection because the game has so many other deep connections it it.

Laguna being Squall's father is old news.

Maybe there is a connection, i believe that Rinoa may possibly be Ultimecia.
If the Griever ring does have something to do with it, try and remeber that squall gives Rinoa his ring(you can see in float up in her face when shes in her space suit)

Yes.
At the same time, there's no certain that she sticks with it until the end of her life.

Or even that Ultimecia is the sorcerer of the near future. She may as well be the sorcerer of 200, 300 years later. Or else, she wouldnt have to turn back in time to be able to get Ellone for the time compression
Maybe Ultimecia only did find the Griever ring in the future and turned it into a GF.

Either way, theres no telling. At least not from what the game tells us.

It's been old news since the game came out, since it was said IN THE GAME.

No, it's not. But I got it right away. I don't really see how someone can miss it.
