I've been trying to rip this all day now and I can't seem to figure out how the audio in this game is stored. From what I got out of it, it looks like there's a few different files used to play music. They have the extensions .TRK, .11k, .STG, and .SHP. Does anyone know what to do?

i dont but i hope you figure a way to rip it, i remember this game way ba ck when, it was quite good

I'm really hoping I can too. It's odd that it's so hard to rip. Usually PC games aren't.

I tried ripping it as well, but with no dice. ):

I made a little progress today. It seems to me that is uses some sort of version of the .MOD format. But I still have nothing playable. :(

My friend, you have raised my curiousity. I gotta admit. I never got a chance to play the game...how was the music? Worth listening to it? thanks

Yes. The soundtrack is very good. There were a few MP3s put out by the company that made it, but the whole soundtrack was never released.

Did you make any progress yet? This used to be one of my favourite games, partially because of the whole atmosphere, and the music was a big part of that.

After I read this thread I thought I'd give it a try myself, ripping these audio files, but my new computer won't even recognize these old CD-Roms...

If it may be some help, the .SHP files seem to be '3D Image Files', if one should trust upon fileinfo.net (http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/shp). So, you might wanna forget about these and put your interest in the other three.

sithlord999

Sorry. I forgot about this thread. :P But I have still been trying. Thanks for the .SHP file info. Now I can cross those ones out. :) From what I've got out of the files so far, the main music files are the .TRK files. But each of them have a corresponding .11K file. Also, while looking at them in a Hex Editor they seemed to refer to each other. (EX: A.TRK is getting information from A.11K) So i'm guessing that there's instrument data stored in the 11k files. But that's just speculation.

It seems that the best we can do is record it while the game is running, unfortunately the sound quality is not that good. I'll see what I can do to enhance it...unless Mr. Sithlord999 figured something out?

sithlord999

I could make HQ recordings with Audacity, but I need to get the game into a windowed mode so I can stop and start the recording and I'm not sure how to do that.

USS Enterprise

You might be able to hit the record button before starting the game, that worked for me. Where ever there is a different track, you'll want to save there so that way there should not be any other sounds affecting the music (except for the final part when the Titanic's sinking and you hear the ship creaking and breaking apart). As a result you should have one large file with the music. Try that.

Oh and beware that the SQ of the game seems to be...AM quality?

sithlord999
02-17-2008, 12:05 AM
Hmm. I think I'll try a few more things and see what happens. If not, I'll do it the way you mentioned. I wouldn't be able to get every track like that though. It's been a loooooong time since I played through the entire game and I forget how to beat it now. :P

USS Enterprise
02-18-2008, 05:03 AM
I used Roxio's Easy Audio Capture (software was cheap...got what I paid for too) and that worked, but I could not get any better quality than what sounded like AM radio. I have some samples for comparing if you want; I'd like to see what you can get as well...if you want to, that is.

I found this thing at a thrift shop and just beat it...it was a good game with a very odd story.

Sure. I'll take a listen to what you got. :) Before I attempt any recording though, I want to be absoultly certian I can't get them another way. Does anyone know of audio formats that require two files to play?

grendel03
02-27-2008, 06:21 AM
I used to play this all the time on my old performa. I'll try to dig it up and see if the audio is stored in a different format for the mac version. If I can find it...

Ah, sorry for my absence. I'll have those samples ready for you tomorrow. Like I said, there is a lot of background noise for some odd reason.

This trk file is compressed pcm, i tried to play it with mfaudio but i got nothing. I will see what i can do because im not experienced in compressed pcm's on pc games, only PS2 games.

sithlord999
03-30-2008, 12:50 AM
Ah, so they're compressed PCMs. For some reason, I was thinking they would end up being played like sequenced Playstation tracks...Which would make ripping very difficult. Haha. I to, am going to mess around with them for awhile and see if I have any success...

Good job on the recordings! :) Sure they were a little static/poppy sounding in some parts, but they're like that ingame anyway. lol

Still though...I really want to figure out how to rip this game...Right now I'm thinking that they're some sort of Apple Sound Format. One reason being is that the text "LPPA" appeared in the Hex Editor. Isn't that an Apple Format thing? I changed the extension on one to AAC for the heck of it and Winamp said that the length was 31 seconds. However when I pressed the play button, all I got was a half a second long pop and it stopped...:P

USS Enterprise
04-05-2008, 02:49 AM
Apple...I think the game was originally designed for the MAC? I remember that on the credits, it gives an extra section for those who worked on porting it to PC. Perhaps the one who will be able to convert these flies will have a Mac?

sithlord999
04-05-2008, 04:55 AM
Yeah. I think you're right. lol

Anyway, I looked at the EXE in IDA Pro (Getting desprate now. XD). While there were many audio playing related things in there, it didn't really reveal much. Just a few strings like "PlayTrack", "PlayTheme", "StopTheme".

I sent a .TRK file to someone who I think may be able to figure it out. Guess I'll wait and see what he says.

sithlord999
04-06-2008, 06:19 PM
Sorry for the double post, but I think I have something.

I imported some of the tracks into Audacity as raw data and underneath all the static and squeeks, you can actually hear the music! I got the same result when changing the extention on the .TRK files to .RAW and rendering them with another program. So does anyone know how to convert these staticy .RAWs?

I did upload the entire soundtrack on the download links page,
Every song
all sinking and everything

Some have sound effects but oh well

I know. I said about it a few posts above. lol I just need sound effect free versions because I want to use them for something.

JoJoJack

Glad to hear you're making progress. And... If there's any need for it, I have a Mac!

Edit: I did a search on the file type, .TRK, and it appears that it's still being used. However, the most common use of it seems to be for files which store GPS information (*link (http://filext.com/file-extension/TRK)), so I'm guessing that's just a totally different file with the same name.

Luckily it doesn't stop there, because there's a seemingly cheap audio program which makes use of it too: LP Ripper (*link (http://www.cfbsoftware.com/lpripper/lpripper.aspx)). It's Windows only, and since I'm a Mac person, you'll have to check it out. Maybe it might even work!

rowedahelicon

I can redo the soundtrack without the sound effects you know, I put them in only for show lol.

If there is a specific song you want without sfx please tell me

USS Enterprise

JoJo, did you need a .TRK file?

How can you get the tracks (the stage where the Titanic's sinking) without sound effects?

I'll check out the LP program later...

sithlord999
04-12-2008, 04:13 AM
@rowedahelicon: The three I had in mind were Zetiel's Bomb, the second C-Hall sinking track, and the little radio loop in the apartment at the beginning.

@JoJoJack: LP Ripper doesn't work. :P Here's a TRK file if you need one:
http://www.box.net/shared/1non62wows

For a better understanding of what kind of audio distortion we're dealing with, here's an example MP3. Cargo Deck:
http://www.box.net/shared/26l24mzok4

Blitz Lunar over at VGmusic told me that they're most likely coming out like this because the game uses a different encoding or compression algorithm which is common in most old PC games. Hopefully, we can find out just what that is soon. Haha. Even though rowedahelicon is doing a good job with the recordings, I still would like to just figure this out...XD

JoJoJack
04-12-2008, 02:39 PM
Thanks for the TRK, I already had one to play with, but two doubles the fun.

And I kinda like the MP3 in all it's weirdness... But it's not really what we're looking for here, hehe. I've got an old Macintosh Performa 5300 which is about, say, 12 years old - I used to play Titanic on it, maybe it has a few tricks of its own. I'll go check it out ;)

So much for progress, hehe. Say, if you're guys still in for it, I just came across someone who did some ripping on his own. Sure, it's far from everything, and there's a lot of white noise in the background...

But hey, you can listen to some of the old favourites in relatively good quality. Here's the link (to give the original ripper some credit), you'll find the sendspace link in the second post:

http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/6929/t1161884-titanic-adventure-out-of-time-soundtrack/

Edit: Just found out about the full rip elsewhere on the site, great! Here's the link, a fine way to end this topic: Thread 53512 ;)

Is anyone working on this anymore? I figured out that the .TRK files are musical score mapping files for Finale music software... However, I still can't seem to open any of them, as they are supposed to refer to midi files that should be opened in Finale. Basically you load the .midi or .mus file into Finale, and then apply the .TRK file which tells Finale how to play the piece...
