I recently acquired the Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core OST. Eagerly, I put it on my iPod without previewing what should and shouldn't be on there. I expected my ears to be taken on a magic carpet ride to Midgar. My expectations were cut short when I was ambushed by an onslaught of wailing guitars and tracks that seemed anything but delightful.

The soundtrack is composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, whose work you may be familiar with from FF7: Last Order.

A good chunk of the songs are ruined with a heavy guitar that smashes the song instead of enhancing it. You've heard how the Black Mages rock out, right? This isn't even close. Some tracks are re-created and are dumped with an electric guitar that, instead of filling the gap, widens it tremendously, and leaves you begging for a more complete, finished song. It's not that it's out of tune or anything, but the guitar parts (and most of the songs) have a sense of emptiness about them. Most of the time I'm thinking that these tracks would be better off in a mindless beat-em-up game.

Alright, now onto the other part...

The song "Why." What the hell? Why put this crappy, twangy Japanese song in a Final Fantasy game? Hearing it makes me think I'm in the grocery store rather than feeling sympathy for Zack or Cloud or whoever. Once again, it doesn't capture the moment just right.

There are a grand total of FOUR "Bombing Mission" songs in the OST, and only one of them is worth keeping around (Track 03 - "Mission Start"). You don't need FOUR Bombing Mission themes. Heck, you don't even need two. The piano was a bit heavy and felt too rushed in those parts as well.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
- A few redeeming, remixed songs (such as "A Closed Off Village (FF7's 'Anxious Heart')"
- The last song; "Fulfilled Desire", the only one, really good track (played during ending credits)

Cons:
- Too much guitar, not enough feeling
- Over 75% of tracks are not up to 'Stevo standard' (or worth keeping)
- Not enough orchestrated themes!! That last track was such a tease!
- Black Mages' guitar = Great... Takeharu Ishimoto's guitar = No. Just, no.

For any who's interested, I extracted the battle theme from Fulfilled Desire, edited and extended it so that it is its own, separate track;
"Those Who Fight (orchestrated)".

So if anyone wants a copy, bother me on this thread or message me.

EDIT: Here's a link to it: http://www.sendspace.com/file/oppfag

Bother me again to re-upload it if it's taken down.

OH... and when i thought i am the only one who think that the theme song (WHY by Ayaka) is really out of place. *sweat drop*

And i love how you wrote "grocery store" lol. Also the song when you are having your meal in your neighborhood family restaurant >_<

I find the Black Mages to be awful crap. I hate the heavy metal sound and they're not even good at it. People just praise them out of alleigance and obsession with Uematsu "imo" etc.

I actually found the Crisis Core ost to be pleasantly suprising (Though I was expecting NOTHING from Takeharu Ishimoto whos claim to fame was a mobile phone game and a really unnoticed anime ova. While I didnt care for any of the heavy electric guitar (though I did think it suited alot of the battle tracks like the new "those who fight further".) This is one of the few video game osts I've ever heard a decent bit of normal guitar on and I really liked it. The guitar was really made Zacks sound. Theres also a lot of violin which I also like. I think the theme of Crisis Core is pretty original and unique in its sound and mood and all the arrangements are very different but all very good. There are too many definitely(But its not like there werent 80 different versions of eyes on me, melodies of life, the place I'll return to someday, suteki da ne, ffvii main theme etc. on there respective ost's.)

I think its also got better arrangements than the other compilation of ffvii ost's (just Advent Children basically) . Different enough in there sound but the faithful melody, a first for "one winged angel" and I was glad there was only one of that song on this ost, it's been overdone. I wanted more spotlight for the less loved themes like Anxious Heart, Shinra theme, Turks theme etc. It's also got a really good take on Aeris's theme thats not just piano or orchestra.

As for "Why". I quite like it, It's casual but bittersweet and not annoyingly japanese and I think it blends in well with the rest of the ost. To say the least I prefer it to that emo'y "Redemption" and "Longing".

I dont think it's an excellent ost but I do think it's a very good one. Takeharu doesn't sound like any other composer Im familiar with. He's got his own sound.

I agree on the heavy metal guitar, too many of those sound too similar and should be in a beat em up or something.

My favourite tracks,

Dreams and pride, Under the Apple Tree, The Burdened, Flower Blooming in the Slums,
Burden of Truth, Wandering on a Sunny Afternoon, Melody of Agony
Moment of Courtesy, Closed off village, Night of Seclusion, Moonlight Wandering
Price of Freedom, Fulfilled Desire, Why

My, my... I think that Takeharu is doing a great work, the OST wasn`t anything too impressive, but it had one track that I`m falling for even now... "Theme of CRISIS CORE ''Under the Apple Tree''"... It was just hearbreaking track, since the day I heard it in one of the first trailers I was just listening to the trailer instead o music. Remixed orginal FFVII tracks were awesome too, bombing mission is bombimg mission, it wouldn`t be it if it wouldn`t have as much remakes as possible. There was another track that affects my brain somehow, "Theme of CRISIS CORE ''Truth Behind the Project''".. It reminds me of Genesis, it seems like it`s just made for him, it reflects some irony, some insanity and elegance too, there are no words in my head to tell how strange it is.
The ending track... Most of the time I remember it with tears in my eyes... "Did Zack really have to die...? Why?"... So thumbs up for "Fulfilled Desire" it was marvellous!
As for Ayaka - Why, it gives me really sad thoughts too, when I heard it in the trailer where a scene of Zacks` death was a bit revealed I was shocked, so it still shocks me, beaucse I can`t stand Zacks death. Overall "Why" was great, and didn`t remind me a grocery store at all. It`s a great song!

I just got my OST (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-2921-71-8l-77-1-49-en-15-crisis core-84-j-70-26lr.html) Today~ :) And listened to them!

Yeap i agree with this good member up here!
At 1st when i heard this song (when the game just came out), just song, i also think that ,"What The Heck?!" How can they destroy the ff atmosphere with that J-Pop song?!'

But then when i watch the Ending...on you tube, i would like, Wow, this song really matches with the ending, "why"... ...SO now, i don think the SOng suck but overall ost is a NO-NO.

All I've heard so far is "Why" and I agree with the majority opinion here. It's a big stinkin' turd.

No matter how many times I watch it on YouTube, Stage6, or any other place, "Why" only prompts me ask myself "why put this awful song in here?" It's not even J-Pop, it's like a hybrid of Country and crap. Kind of similar to elevator music, but with words. Even elevator music is more catchier than this...

Aeris' Theme is appropriate for Aeris' death, why couldn't Zack's death be a sweet, sad tune as well? It's an alright song, it's just brutally misplaced.

I stand by my original opinion, this OST is a disappointment. "Why" only furthers my stance.

it's one of the best i've ever heard.

there is a tonne of feeling in it. the guitar adds a kind of teenage angst (in keeping with the characters ages).

aeris theme seems sweeter which is fitting as she is actually alive. it's a sweet song this time and kind of romantic.

the battle music is awesome. tonnes of energy, and it's good to hear hard rock as opposed to nobuo's more symphonic style.

Usually when i hear jpop i am scared of hearing a 10 year old girl screaming. but as soon as i heard ''Why'' i liked it. Ayaka's voice is strong and she adds to the emotion in the song.

Fulfilled Desire genuinely makes your hairs stand on end. it is captivating from start to finish. One of the best tracks on there.

the remixes of Nobuo's music was handled well. And it's cool to hear some of the songs from Last Order.

overall the soundtrack is excellent quality.

Last Order was an osm song.

Aeris's Theme was better than it was before.

What I see with this work of Ishimoto's is unfufilled potential. Sure, doing guitar for an FF game is a bit odd, and maybe with a more experienced composer this soundtrack could have been memorable. Some of the remixes were decent, but do we really need the main theme repeated over and over with just about every musical instrument known to man? (Oh, I forgot the accordion. It'll probably be a bouns track when they re-issue the OST in ten years.) As for "Why": the situation here is not too different from the hack job Utada Hikaru did with the recent Rebuild of Evangelion single (for those who don't know, it was some cheesy, airy, pop diddy with lame-ass lyrics). The song really evoked no emotion in me.

No, I was talking about "Beautiful World." That was the song that was actually featured in the movie. Her version of "Fly Me To The Moon" was just in the trailer. But this isn't the place to talk about such things...!
