trailer here: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809233751/video/4164037/

plot from Wikipedia:

"El Paso and Abilene, Texas have fallen victim to twin nuclear attacks on July 4, 2005 a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions which sent America into war. The Patriot Act has been upgraded to a new agency known as US-IDENT, which keeps constant tabs on citizens even to the extent of censoring the internet and using fingerprints in order to access computers and bank accounts. In order to be able to respond to a newfound fuel scarcity, the German company Treer designs a generator of inexhaustible energy which is propelled by ocean currents. Unbeknownst to them, the generators alter the currents and cause the Earth to spiral out of control through space, ripping holes in the fabric of space and time.

In Los Angeles, a city on the brink of chaos, we follow the criss-crossed destinies of Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action film actor stricken with amnesia; Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), ex-porn star in the midst of reconverting; and twin brothers Roland and Ronald Taverner (both played by Seann William Scott), whose destinies on one evening become intertwined with that of all mankind."

this is Richard Kelly's second feature film after Donnie Darko, so that alone should be enough to create a buzz. apparently the movie has been finished for awhile , but it got overwhelmingly negative reviews at Cannes when it debuted, so Kelly was forced by Sony to edit it and cut some stuff out.

this could very well be one giant clusterfuck, but seeing a lot of actors outside of roles that we usually see them in has got me intrigued, and i find the whole "end of the world" premise interesting so i am sure that i will be seeing it. any thoughts?

also, i'm pretty tired of hearing about whether donnie darko was a terrible movie or not so try to keep that kind of discussion of out this thread unless it's relevant, please. thanks!

Well, I love end of the world/catastrophe flicms. The trailer looks a little too .. fruity for my tastes, but the cast seems really interesting, so it might be worth checking out. I guess I'll see how FFSers react to it since I'm too cheap to go to the movies on a whim :(

This looks like it could be pretty fun, but it would be hard for it to walk that fine line without moving into cheesy and ridiculous. Not really what I expected from the next Richard Kelly movie, but I'll check it out.

Dull name though.

Dull name though.
i agree, although apparently "southland" is what locals call the southern california/los angeles area so it kinda makes sense

also the song at the end of the trailer, "forget myself" by elbow, is really good and you guys should check it out

The Southland Tales cast reminds me of the Dr. Strangelove cast. Definitely a recipe for awesome.

Even if I didn't think this looked good, I'd probably see it for SMG.

I am really interested to see reaction to this once you all see it. it's impossible to chat about till you do. and you likely won't get the reason i say that till you do. i just hope and pray that someone let's Richard Kelly put out a Director's Cut on DVD. i can't even imagine this thing over 3 hours. but it was at one point and i'd love to witness the train wreck in full viewing mode.

Doesn't look good. I won't mention what I think of Donnie Darko (in so many words), but I will say that I am not surprised.

I always thought she looked like a boxer that has taken too many hits. Like a female Rocky, but not as smart.
