US broadcasting giant NBC is planning to bring 'Knight Rider' back to TV screens.

Variety reports that NBC has hired 'Mr and Mrs Smith' and 'The Bourne Identity' director Doug Liman to produce a 'Transformers'-inspired reworking of the 1980s series about the crusading Michael Knight and his computerised car KITT.

KITT could shift shapes in the new series, which could also see battles involving 'evil' cars.

The trade daily says NBC is developing a two-hour pilot episode and hopes to air it as a TV movie in the US later this year; if that goes well a full series could be on air by next autumn.

Aside from producing the pilot, Liman may also sit in the director's chair

Man, the original would be way better then. I mean, the whole shape-shifting thing has been done before (anyone remember Viper?). Pontiac Trans-AM ftw (how I wish I could get one, but there's no Pontiac in Malaysia :/ )

Also, Evil cars? The original already had one: KARR. Which was one too many. The old ones battling human baddies was better.

Absurd! The first I heard of this I was heartbroken. Although I'm not fond of the idea, I suppose they would have to implement new ideas -seeing as how it wouldn't be very practical to just remake the original scripts.
Hmm, it'll be interesting to see if this turns out good or not.

they lost me at the casting. even worse is the idea that KITT is now going to some Transformers-esque shape shifting knock-off.

i am a firm believer in waiting to see the final product but this has BIONIC 2.0 disaster written all over it.

O.o Wow. They should've left KR alone. The classic original version is always the best. *sighs* Might as well see what happens with this new version. So, when is it coming on? It's the end of the year already? Haha.

Guess they had the same idea with the Bionic Woman. Great concept, though.

Looks like Justin Browning will play Michael Knight and the KITT car will be a mustang. It will also be a made for tv movie and David Hassellhoflejsoalhdjchslj...whatever will make a guest appearance. Just got this from the E! channel.

They tried it with Team Knight Rider. They should've remembered that it didn't work out- the series lasted only a season or two.

Well, in any case, the least anyone can really do is give it least two or three episodes before passing judgement. After all, a lot of individuals thought the new "Terminator" series was going to be a total bust (myself included). After watching a few shows, I'm actually surprised to find that it's pretty decent (and, apparently, a lot of other people seem to have passed the same judgement. At least, that's what the networks are leading one to believe). Although, they should at the very least have the Hoffmeister make a cameo appearance or something...maybe even return as a bad guy in a future episode or something. That might quell a few of the original KT fanboys' flames of anger over the casting choices and KITT turning from a 1982/1984 Pontiac Trans Am T-Top to a 2008 Ford Mustang GT500KR (remember Knight Rider 2010, anyone???). Just my two cents worth.
