I was discussin with a friend (not a member here) weither Red was a cat. Being a cat person myslef (mainly becuase of my upbringing), I personly felt he was a cat, where as my friend felt he was a dog. Here's why I think he's a cat:

Head
Look at my avatar. You'll see it curves in at the mouth. Now look at a cat's head. You'll see it also curves in at the mouth

Tail
Cat's use there tail to show there mood, where as dogs swish there tail basically 24/7. Red's tail wasn't swishing 24/7 like a dogs. It showed his mood. When he was surprised/anrgy, it went straight etc.

Paws
Ever looked at a cat's paw, or a picture of a lions paw? Now look at Reds. Again, we see a match.

Body
Red has the sleak body, much like that of a cat.

And what about his victory dance? I must admit it's been a while since I played FF7, but unless I'm mistaken, Red washes himself. How? He licks a paw, and rubs it around his head, like cats do. I don't think Dog's wash themselves, otherwise there owners won't need to give them baths!

Sure, he may howl but then this is a fantasy game, so why not have a talking, howling cat/lion-like creature?

dunno.....Red XIII was kind of a dog to me....maybe that's why a called him 'Houndawg' in the game...hehe

There have been interbreeds of Lions and Tigers (called Ligons, naturally) for a long time. They look almost exactly like Red XIII (without the anime aspect).

His victory dance he stands on his hind legs and howls. Cats dont stand on their hind legs I dont think.

Anyways hes a dog. His nose is big like a dog and he is big like one, and ALL CATS HAVE WHISKERS. He doesnt.

Well I would have to say he is a cat cuz' they way his body and face are... he kinda reminds me of a Panther/Tiger mix, he sure looks cool...

He's obviously a cat. Dogs don't have those huge whiskers:D

I think its time i made the point that its a game. Vampire, Moogles and talking cats dont exist in real life but their in final fantasy. RED XIII is made up.

I'd think if anything he's a wolf like creature, he howls which cats cannot do, and yet he roars which wolves cannot. His tail is long (it also has a flame at the end of it) more like a feline tail. his paws however are not overly large like a big cats would be and he really doesnt use then almost like hands (apart from when he crosses them) if he was feline I would expect to use them for slashing as a usual attack. he also pants when hot and uses his nose to sniff things, which is a canine thing.Possibly more canine though as I normally desrcibe him as a fire wolf. I think he's both, and neither. He's a fantasy creature like a moonba or moogle and both of those while resembling some things in an abstract way, are neither.

Hmm. Interesting points going so far.

This is a fantasy game, so it could have a cat that howls.

In the 500 yr later ending, Red pounces onto different rocks when going up a mountine. The agility he has shouts out cat, as dogs don't have that agaility

One thing Nanaki XIII - cats can and will stand in there hind legs. If my cat hears a strange noise, she'll rise herself by standing on her hind legs to get a better look. Her paws even "dangle" the same way Red's does. She also does the same if you dangle food abover her head (except she uses her paws to grab the food). I don't supose a lion or a tiger does that though.

Neither. Simple as that. He even stated he was an unexplained type of species, and it's never revealed. Nice of you to try and reason though.

Thanks for pointing out the cat information Raiden. I do not have a cat so I do not know. I probably think he looks like a dog because I like dogs better, but he is more like a panther or wolf, (arent those cat and dogs?) than regular dog. But when did you see whiskers on him Cloud?

I'd like to think its a cat. Although maybe its both. ^_~

I think Nanaki (Red XIII is the name given by Hojo) is more a kind of lion.

donkey. Red is a rare type of donkey. just take my word for it, i have no proof to back up my claim

I was pretty much convinced that he was a dog, cuz of the fact that he seemed to have the figure.

Also when he arrived at 'Cost Del Sol' he said something about his nose drying up cuz of the heat. I'm pretty sure only dog's noses are usually wet, not cats. Remember those kids kicking around the ball? I had Cloud kick it once and it hit Red XIII! Then he barked at Cloud. Then there was the time when he howled at Cosmo Canyon ( I won't say why, for those who haven't got that far).
That's my only evidence.

I think Red is a dog because - his face looks like a dog's (because my dog's face has the same shape as Red's), also he can stand on his hind legs well alot like a dog, his nose dries up like dogs noses do. He howls, barks and growls like a dog. Also who said that dogs tails never stop waging because my dog's tail stop waging occsionally.

I thought it was obvious that he was a lion? (Or a tiger), Which is a cat, so he's of the cat species. I never even thought about him being a dog. He's a cat, just think about it, he's just not your ordinary cat.

I would have to say dog, Due to the fact that many of his limit breaks include howling, and if you listen closely, In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, during the fight agaist Bahamut SIN, he yelps like dog. But then again, he also has a cat's tail, as well as the fact that he does roar. What I think is, he might a hybrid of a Wolf and Lion. Although it's not likely, it's possible.
