There are four different current series/teams of tactical rpg's that are popular and that are released in the United States.

I'll list all tactical rpg's from each of the four teams/series, including ones not released in Usa...

1. Yasumi Matsuno/Ivalice/Ogre teams(s)
Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle 64, Ogre Battle Gaiden, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Tactics A2

2. Nippon Ichi Software team
Disgaea, La Pucelle: Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Disgaea 2, Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, Disgaea 3

3. Front Mission team
Front Mission 1, Front Mission 2, Front Mission 3, Front Mission 4, Front Mission 5: Scars of the War

4. Fire Emblem team
many non-Usa games, Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

My favorite team is the first team, which split up into two teams after Tactics Ogre but merged back into one team starting with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I love team 3 also! I haven't played any games by teams 2 and teams 4 but they seem interesting and I hope to play them.

What is your favorite team? My vote is for Team 1!! You may choose another team as long as they have atleast 2 Usa released tactical rpg's. :)

EDIT:
I have to post this, I just looked on metacritic.com/games for the averages of critical reviews and user votes for Ogre Battle 64. It has the highest user rating I've EVER seen for a game!
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/n64/ogrebattle64?q=ogre%20battle%2064
82% from 10 critical reviews but it has 98% from 45 user votes!

On the bottom of the page, click on "Read more user comments...". Every person but one on that list gave it a 10 out of 10!!! I've never seen a game this highly rated!! I have to get this game! :) I'm going to post a thread on this game now!

Definitely 1.

My Brother loves the Nippon Software team. Also, Fire Emblem's team is very good too. I love the FFTactics and Ogre Battle Group though, FFTactics is one the best games ever made IMO.

Good Thread.

Nippon released Soul Nomad & The World Eaters last month for PS 2, which is generally considered good or pretty good. Next year they have Disgaea 3 for PS 3. Fire Emblem is getting a game for the Wii on November 12th. The main Yasumi Matsuno team made five games: Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII. All the other games in the list for that entry are made by partially the same team only, so the team actually only made five games. I should have explained it more specifically.

Is Final Fantasy Tactics the pinnacle of it's style of tactical rpg?

Definitely Nippon Ichi for me. Granted I love FFTactics, but it didn't grab me and pull me from life quite like Disgaea had

I voted for the 'Front Mission' team. Something about controlling robots and having them blow big holes in other robots appeals to me :) . Honourable mention to the 'Fire Emblem' team as well (Fire Emblem Path of Radiance has it's teeth in me atm).

I also would like to mention the Konami strategy/tactical rpg series, Vandal Hearts. The first VH was released a year before FFT, and while the graphics may've been a little 'cartoony', it was still a very solid and great game.

You voted for Front Mission! I'm impressed! I've beaten only FM 1 for Snes(translated rom) and FM: Gun Hazard for Snes(translated rom) from that team. I've heard praise about Vandal Heart, I'd like to try it. What Front Mission games have you beaten? :D

I'd like to bring up the Dragon Force/Generations of Chaos team. The first DF was released in the US, the second one wasn't. I think there are five GoC games, the last two of which have come to the States. The fourth one, from what I hear, is crippled by atrocious load times, while the fifth one is probably my favorite game on the PSP.

I wonder how these games are? I wonder about the ratings and the sales, I'll check it out.

I've beaten the translated ROM of Front Mission and the PSX Front Mission 3 (Around 3 times, twice for Alyssa's storyline to get that all powerful Wanzer, and once for the other lady). Pity the others haven't come here to Australia yet :(

If you want to play VH, try VH1 first. the characters are awesome and the spells, heh, 'Phase Shift' massive dmg and it's AOE is almost the whole damn map.

I forgot to mention that Dragon Force is a Saturn game, and that the GoC games were originally PS2 games (we only got the PSP ports in America).

Xiahou, beat the 2nd FM game, it's FM: Gun Hazard for Snes, you need the translation though. Edgeemu is a site that's good but according to the rules, the file must be deleted in 24 hours, hehe. Front Mission 4 came out in Usa along with FM 3, beat that one. FM 1 is coming out on Oct 23rd to Usa for DS. Will you send me a copy of Vandal Heart?

How many good Saturn rpg's were released? I want to research Dragon Force now.

Such a difficult question, with (2) and (4) nearly tied for me, but FE ended up winning out due to the stronger character development and general challenge factor, despite the **seemingly** simpler gameplay (FE6 in Hard = fun... especially when you get to that mission where you must kill that maniacal Dragon Knight while being polted by Mages and Bishops casting Bolting and Purge!).

I also like the NIS games, particularly the Spectral Souls and Disgaea series. The challenge factor of the NIS games is also really high... although sometimes, they suffer from some inconsistencies in the games (really can't explain it, but they do happen...).

Are you going to get the Fire Emblem Wii game on November 5th? Have you gotten Soul Nomad & The World Eaters yet?

What is the general them of Fire Emblem games?

@Dragonsoul: I don't have a Wii right now (probably within a few months, unless a Shin Megami Tensei game comes out for the PS3, then I'm screwed). I haven't really bought any new games lately...

FE games always have medieval themes.

There is no Shin Megami Tensei game announced for the PS 3 so far I believe. Can somebody confirm this? Do you mean something medieval like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

Check out the front page of Rpgamer for info on Fire Emblem, there's an article

Well my fav. must be... The guys who made Vandal Hearts, especially Vandal Hearts 2, it had me addicted for several months if not years! o:
I do also like Legend Of Kartia, there should be more TRPG where you can play 2-player (:
And recently Lumnious Arc has had a tight grip on me ...!

But all the others TRPG's that has been mentioned I can only say, I love them, I just can't get enough of TRPG and it would be a hell to choose... ><

You mentioned Kartia?! This rules, I remember that this game had character designs from Yoshitaka Amano, I wonder how popular this game was though? It was an early Playstation 1 rpg. :)
