So, why revive a thread that has been dead for two months when there's another one just like it that started earlier but is still alive?

Anyways, as stated in the other thread, my first RPG is FFVI (FFIII US), which I played on my cousin's SNES clone. The whole thing blew me away and is actually what got me started on the emulation scene (greedy pig won't let me borrow the game and SNES, and my aunt refused me an SNES because I already have a Sega MegaDrive and she thought that was good enough -.- )

Either FFI (NES) or Dragon Warrior(NES), but I didn't complete FFI till much later. I feel obligated to mention Pool of Radiance (NES) which started my long-standing admiration for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting even thought I still haven't completed the friggin' thing.

tdkryu, not everyone will point this out politely, but LoZ has indeed been classified as perhaps the seminal action-adventure title of that era. Link's Awakening has more similarities to an RPG than the original LoZ.

This is like saying a stapler is more similar to an airplane than a paper clip.

It's totally true. Staplers can get modded with a jet engine and seating for at least 3 to allow airborne paper unities.

Paperclips, however, just stay the same. A lame piece of bent wire.

This is like saying a stapler is more similar to an airplane than a paper clip.

Well, whatever analogy you wish, really.

It is not an RPG, yet similarities exist so I can understand the confusion. Not everyone knows what defines a proper RPG. JRPGS in particular often use the term with exceptional latitude so yes, I can understand how some gamers erroneously label a game as role-playing.

execrable gumwrapper
07-08-2008, 12:08 AM
doomjockey, the problem in your LoZ comparison is you named the wrong game. I believe you meant to say Link's Adventure.

doomjockey
07-08-2008, 12:15 AM
Wtf is up with me. You're right. The second one, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is exactly what I meant. That's more similar to an RPG than the classic LoZ games.

EDIT for manners: Thanks for pointing that out.

Final Fantasy VII, when I was ten and it first came out. Literally didn't know what the fuck was going on, had to put it down for a couple of months in lieu of twisted metal, crash bandicoot, etc. Then went back, played and...hooked.

*Edit*

Also, the first time a commercial hooked me for a game too.

Mine was Super Mario RPG. I played it at my friends house. They loaded up their save file, right before the final boss.

There's already a more recent thread for this topic... Why did you bump this one?
