Long story short, Megaupload is cracking down on almost all the files we've put on their site, and the uploads with game music on their site are being invalidated at an alarming rate.

We need to spread the word that using Megaupload is no longer an option and find which sites are more friendly for us and to see if we can get a prefered site to replace Megaupload.

Site name and max amount of memory you can upload for each file.

It's really simple to use, there are no upload/download limits, it's free, you don't have to register and your files never get removed.

But there is a catch... If you don't register, you only have 30MB max limit... :(

Just some insight on this thread...MediaFire and Divshare both are unlimited in the amount of files you can upload and keep them forever...but actually, I've seen both delete albums which they say were against their user agreements/copywritten stuff.

I advise people who upload to these sites (also, MediaFire is faster to download from) to make an encrypted archive of songs, title it with something inconspicuous, and upload it while posting the password (and hopefully those sites don't read the forums since they can track back where the hits are coming from).

If you're uploading to MediaFire which doesn't allow encrypted archives, and if the filesize of the archive is larger than say 95MB, then add it to another archive and split the archives into 95MB pieces, since most of the time the final size would be increased from 95MB to around 100MB, which is the filesize limit of what you can upload to MediaFire. Then you can upload all the archives fine while the content is encrypted.

Cheers!

edit: and wow, I didn't think this was my first post here.

The upload sites probably receive anyway the info about the referrer of the links and that may be the reason why the files are deleted; in the forums of the site snesorama.us the administrator wrote this:

DO NOT POST LIVE LINKS. Code them. Any links NOT CODED will be DELETED on sight.
Coding the links is necessary to prevent the hosting sites to see the referrer, which is snesorama.us. if they see the referrer, they will check back and see the copyrighted material on their server. and will delete the files. Don't let it happen to you.

So I strongly suggest that all users code all links and ffshrine allows the coding of the links (to wrap all links with the CODE tag) as ocurred in snesorama.

Just select the text with the mouse and then press on the "#" icon (in "normal reply" or "advanced edit"), the "wrap CODE tags around selected text". The links will appear like this:

You can get around the 100MB limit of most of these sites by doing .RAR files spread across several archives, i.e. file.rar, file.r00, file.r01, etc. That's the easiest way to deal w/ sites like Badongo that have their own (crappy) method of splitting files, or just outright rejecting anything over their upload file size limit.

Been using Megaupload for a couple of years and I've had no trouble.

Filehosting sites can see whats in an encrypted RAR file so make sure you check the box to encrypt the contents aswell. So then even double-clicking the RAR file to view the contents will require a password.

And stop doing this:

http://www.megaupload.com/

code your links like this:

http://www.megaupload.com/

that way they can't be traced back to this site!!

The most important argument pro megaupload is, that the links will last a long time, instead of mediafire and sendspace. You can forget the last two ones, because the links haven't a long living duration. Rapidshare is o.k., but I must admit: the 15 minute break disturbs much of the download comfort.

You're probably registered. That happens to me as well. With the toolbar you get premium download during happy hours.

But on to what I originally wanted to post. I'm using megaupload for my files at the moment, but really want to change upload sites. Does Filefactory have a longer upload period than megaupload? I honestly can't deal with re-uploading a file into megaupload every three months that get neglected by users in any site I post them up. That's truely a hassle to me.

Thanks in advance for the info.

MediaFire, GigaSize, and Filedropper are the best in my opinion.

MediaFire is almost perfect, but it can only take files less than 100MB.
GigaSize can take up to 600MB per file if you register for a free account, but only stores files for 45 days.
Filedropper has 5GB per file limit, so you can post huge files, and it's pretty cheap to make an account, but overall it's problematic.

So overall, I'd go with MediaFire. Then again, Megaupload's 45 second wait can be ignored with certain methods. Some Firefox plugins can remove the wait from sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc. Illimitux is probably the better of some of the others. SkipScreen has a habit of sometimes breaking links. But that still doesn't stop Megaupload from removing files.

MegaUpload has become much, much better over the past year. Not only do their links last very long, but they give you a generous download limit before you have to wait and their speeds are incredibly fast.

Everyone should be using the MegaUpload Time Attack (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11704) Firefox extension. It enlarges the captcha so it's easy to read and it automatically starts the download after entering captcha. There's no need to click anything.

I would recommend ADrive (http://www.adrive.com/). It gives you 50 gigabytes for FREE! and you can link to files and zips easily.

it takes photos, docs, zips, favourites, and music.

u can change a file to private or public as u wish.

it allows batch uploads, and can see files within multiple folders.

For use this service, you need to have a Windows Live ID (Messenger, Xbox Live, Microsoft Passport), you can try other alternatives.

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but Rapidshare is starting to delete files after 60 days on January 1st, 2010 for free accounts and also premium accounts that use 50GB and up, so expect expiring links.

Everyone should be using the MegaUpload Time Attack Firefox extension. It enlarges the captcha so it's easy to read and it automatically starts the download after entering captcha. There's no need to click anything.

Even better than that is the [Hidden link. Registered to show this.] with firefox or the [Hidden link. Registered to show this.] that does it for you.

Click, wait, it's downloaded.

I prefer hotfile as they support FTP upload. Anyone who cannot understand how to use an FTP client is an imbecile. Sites that claim "FTP is too complicated so we do X instead" is full of bullsh*t.

no FTP upload option for free users? don't bother with it unless it offers exceptionally awesome features

I think he's saying that because it's incredibly easy. However, I'm not sure if it's easy to encode that type of service onto a site. But if a site does use it, then it has to be good. btw, divShare upped their free server space to 10gb instead of just 5. I'd change my Signature, but the site won't let me.

I would recommend ADrive (http://www.adrive.com/). It gives you 50 gigabytes for FREE! and you can link to files and zips easily.

However, it seems that it only gives you a 14 day trial for the free server space, unless I read it wrong.

People do not realize this thread was started in 2007.

Megaupload is THE BEST host to use these days. They have no speed limit on their files, they actually last LONGER than RapidShare these days (the links,) you can use jDownloader with it, and you can download up to 6 files back to back (one at a time though) per every 10 minutes... You cannot beat that.

Also thought I might post this(incase you didn't already know this) Rapidshare has taken down a lot of the links due to their "copyright content", so Rapidshare is another out of the question.

@Helgen-X - If you read the beginning post, Megaupload had taken a lot of their links down they've posted, I've found a ton of dead links that led to Megaupload, don't get me wrong, Megaupload is great for a lot of big files, but deadlinks is not cool either. :/

It's simple.... If you have your account on Megaupload, you have things much easier + If you're not and idiot and won't post for example ''Gorillaz - Plastic Beach 2010.zip'' but rename it as ''Mighty Duck 4000.zip'' or ''BBO.zip''.
Also you have always the option of lock your file with password.

If you will post some copyrighted material in it's original name, it will get deleted everywhere by the time. The prevention is pretty easy, but 90% are not doing it and then they are angry that their files got deleted and uploading them each week like crazy.

because people were and still are doing stupid shit like using anonym.to, not encoding the file names, not putting a password on the file, and giving the file names and descriptions like "Complete Final Fantasy VII Soundtrack Rip from Final Fantasy Shrine"

Mediafire is one of the best, Rapidshare is also great, Megaupload is great when they don't remove a file because files they host can usually last YEARS if they stay on lol. Sendspace isn't that good because of the wait and the limit AND files don't last that long on it.

sendspace.com

300 MB per file.

i have friends that use sendspace, it is very reliable. i've gotten their files off the site for over a year now.

If you can deal with smaller download limits it's better to use multiple mirror uploaders http://editthis.info/wiki42/Uploads

in my opinion, i dont like filefactory. if a download freezes, u have to wait half an hour to try again. so i dont recommend that site.

Megaupload is not only bad because of their removal of our files, but because they have several ads that can pop up even with a pop-up blocker, and they put pornographic spyware on your computer. In my opinion, MediaFire is the best alternative.

divShare!

Seriously. Perfect for uploading music files to. No passwords, or download waits. You can also set the files to direct links. I don't see why no one else uses it here.

Maxx Skywalker

Makes sense. I suppose you could use more than one site though. Well, at the moment, I have 10gb of space for free, and I still haven't filled that up yet. Course, my collection isn't nearly as massive as your's is, Jessie.

As a side note; I just downloaded some soundtracks from MediaFire, and they seemed to provide quick downloads, with no waits. What are the restrictions for hosting there?

Max upload size is 200mb, but I find anything 180mb and over is usually corrupted without fail and anything around 150ish up to 180 also has a good chance of coming out corrupt. I usually try to make parts of files 100-120 or less (preferably less) and I find most times anything 80mb or less usually never come out corrupt. The good side is infinite parallel downloads.

edit - I always test MF links before posting them.

Well, I did a little digging through divShare's subscription fees when I noticed people were saying that they were PAYING for premium accounts on file sharing sites such as MegaUpload (reference the MegaUpload Shutdown thread). So I've come up with divShare's rates. They are starting out free accounts with 20gb storage/unlimited bandwidth. If you upgrade at 39.99/yr you receive 100gb storage with unlimited bandwidth. The Professional Account is not even worth mentioning because the rates for that are ridiculously expensive, though for a personal account at just over $3 a month, it's cheaper than running a website with a hosting plan.

At this point in time, if you were intending on paying for a premium membership, divShare might be your best bet.

Once again, you are given a 2gb upload limit, and files stay online forever.

I think this thread could possibly be closed now, considering how ironic it is that we CAN'T use MegaUpload anymore.

I disagree. In fact it's more useful now more than ever as this thread has a huge list of alternative upload sites that no other thread had. Course, I wouldn't complain if a huge master list was created to encompass all of the suggested sites and their benefits.

Perhaps a name change might be in order?

I'm surprised no one has already mentioned this as a viable alternative to any upload site, but I shall be the first. Buy a domain for $10, get a hosting plan with a nice package that gives you a decent amount of bandwidth and plenty of server space for $10 to $30 a month. Depending on your needs, you can generally find some pretty good deals. Sarah's costs are inflated because she created a community that drew so much bandwidth that it forced her to expand. With a community that shares their own hosting, dedicated hosting would not be a problem, especially if you were going to exclusively use it for download links.

There are plenty of services to choose from, namely goDaddy, Host Monster, or Just Host. You can usually find something that'll fit your needs.

I don't normally proselytize my business here, but I do offer plenty of affordable hosting and website packages. You don't even need to be a web developer to be able to do this. Either go to ModularityNet.com or call 888.770.8284 if you have any questions. Ask for Dave.
