Only thing I can say is, "many different things". It's kinda like FF, almost all the games of the series have no continuity with and are indipendent of each other.

I'll have to go with Abyss too. Since they actually took the good route of adding free-run in battles added practically a whole new dimension to the game. After playing Abyss for 200+ hours I tried to play my old favorite Tales game, Tales of Symphonia. Got into a battle, then I realized that it fails. >_>

Lol so true, Tales of the Abyss really took a good turn in the series I love free run you can actually run away from attacks freely instead of being crowded by your other party members in a narrow corner. XD

Symphonia fails when you get trapped in a corner in a battle, and can't manuever away from the enemy. The golems in that first dungeon were case of this. Your only choice is take a beating, and if you're under-levelled, die.

Abyss is truly my favorite Tales game, but I've only played Symphonia, Legendia, and Abyss.

Legendia is funny. It's a fun game to play. But it's a joke compared to Abyss, considering plot, characters, and graphics. Legendia does sport a classy soundtrack, though. Features some of the first orchestral work that I've heard out of a console RPG in awhile.

Tales of Symphonia would have to be my favorite. Before I played it I had only played Phantasia for about 3 hours on an emulator. Now I've beaten Symphonia, Abyss, Tempest, Legendia, Phantasia (in that order), and also played a bit of Destiny. I couldn't stand Abyss' loading times, and the addition of Free Run made the game to easy. Sadly, it seems to be the standard now...

ToD:R holds the top spot of any Tales of games I've played. It was just so....fun in general.

ToR is great too. The storyline is a bit...boring though. It's basically the same thing as Phantasia and Symphonia, what with racism and all that. The battle system however saved it

TotA is great despite the bad graphics and bad loading times. The battles get pretty intense and the storyline isn't that bad either.

ToL holds a place in my heart as being the first seriously funny RPG I've played. I also don't get where the hate comes from. It's a solid game, albeit a bit slow. And the soundtrack is to die for.

So yeah, those are my favorites. I exclude ToD2(The real one, no Eternia) and ToS on the grounds that they suck.

I played Symphonia (CD broke down after 4 hours of play time :( ), Destiny II, and Abyss. They're all cool, but I particularly like Destiny II since its a lot longer than Abyss and the world is more open ended (underwater places pl0x).

Abyss though had nice boss battles, especially the hidden ones whose quest to meet the boss takes you even to the end of the game.

I'm still trying to look for a working Symphonia CD so I can give my damn critique >_<

This thread kind of amazes me.

I hope everyone plays tales of phantasia. In terms of battle, it lags behind the others, because it was the first one created...

but tales of phantasia has by ""FAR"" the best storyline and musical score.

As much as I enjoyed playing tales of the abyss, legendia and symphonia, they don't really compare to phantasia's masterful work.

The storyline...

But tales of destiny is considered the weakest of the series. By a long shot. I can't even remember the storyline in either one. And the soundtracks were forgettable as well. The battle theme in TOD2 was fucking AWFUL. I turned my volume off so I wouldn't have to hear it.

Tales of the Abyss, hands down. Symphonia was good too, but I think the storyline for Abyss had a lot of "WTF" and "OMG" kind of twists in there. Abyss also had so much more character development than Symphonia did, simply for the fact that the characters in Symphonia start out as friends already, while characters in Abyss had to go through the process of getting to know and trust each other. And yeah, Free Run was a nice addition - I like having complete control over my characters. What's the point of a 3D battlefield if you can't utilize it?

I really want to get my hands on Tales of Rebirth, but it seems that the US isn't ever gonna get that one *cries* Looking forward to Tales of Innocence and Tales of Symphonia for the Wii though.

I've only played Abyss and Legendia and I thought they were both great. They both have their goods and their bads. They both had a good storyline I thought with intresting twist but I thoguht Legendia had more witty dialog(when apporprate) and the characters you spend the most amount of time with were intresting. However in Abyss I thought it had more intresting dialog and I like the battle system more(Evil characters appeared more intresting with the exception of Guy and his fear of girls). So I really can't say which one I like.

Yeah, Abyss is my favorite, mostly due to the epic win that is Jade. The battle system rocks too, though sometimes I found myself missing the combination attacks from Symphonia.

Phantasia, If you watched the anime, is based off of the Valhalla War, and then Symphonia is Based off of Ragnarok. Apparently, Symphonia leads into Phantasia. Even though The Valhalla War Started Ragnarok.

Might I ask why Abyss would be last? Not that I'm judging you or anything; just curious. :)

I honestly can't decide over which Tales series I like best. One thing I've noticed about the series is that there'll always be a character who sticks out from the rest, which is good.

I liked Arche in Phantasia more than the other characters in that game. Sure, we've seen her type before, but she made the game more interesting. The other characters really just didn't have the charisma that was noticing. It was like "Let's go here!" "Ok!" "Let's save the world!" "Yes!"

I liked Reid in Eternia 'cause...well...his crave for food, I guess. Kinda reminds me of myself. :P

Jade in Abyss because he was like a breath of fresh air. Finally, someone who's saving the world that isn't some teen still battling with their hormones and angst! :)

Tales games I've seriously played:
Phantasia (Playstation version, better than SNES)
Destiny 2 (or Eternia)
Symphonia

Of those, I like Phantasia the best, then Destiny 2, then Symphonia. Symphonia was my first Tales game, but I happen to like the 2D ones better. I can't wait until Tales of Hearts, if it comes out in America.

When I played Phantasia, I played it for two days straight (minus sleeping and eating) and still didn't beat it. That game is soo long and addicting...

I love Symphonia soooooo much. And I'm actually very surprised that people actually liked Abyss so much. To me the characters have absolutely no chemistry together and, the girls are all annoying and I'm not even finished with the game yet!!!

Don't get me wrong, it has it's moments when it was pretty entertaining, but it lacks a good, non-confusing storyline. When it started to get into the sephiroths and the inner and outer world I simply gave up..*laughs*

If you need to explain every little detail about your world that's not a good thing. Now I'm not sure about the other Tales games, but If anyone has a good review of Phantasia I'd love to hear it.^^

Out of the small fraction of Tales games that I've played (Tales of Destiny, Tales of the Abyss, and Tales of Vesperia), it has to be Tales of the Abyss. The story is interesting and has enough twists and turns to keep the cliche parts from being painfully obvious (unlike Vesperia). The characters, while initially coming off as being somewhat bland, really grow on you over the course of the game, even the annoying ones. The music, while having a few pitfalls, is top notch, and I'm actually surprised by how much I liked Shinji Tamura's pieces (he composed most of the town and dungeon themes). Vesperia's battle themes may be a bit better, but Abyss is overall more consistent and Karma is so much more enjoyable (even as an instrumental piece) than Ring a Bell.

Vesperia is a close second. It's better than Abyss in some respects, namely graphics, voiced skits, and Yuri's awesomeness as the main character. However, it loses points for the dull story, lack of a true villan (Alexei's close, but Van is so much better), and static characters who are essentially the same at the end of the game as when you first meet them. Oh, and Jade > Raven (as the requisite sarcastic "old man") and Asch > Flynn (as the badass foil for the main character). 'Nuff said.

They all pretty good. Tales of Phantasia has a special place in my heart I played that since the first translation came out and loved it...

Tales of destiny was OK, I just thought they didn't improve the gameplay at all enough from ToP so it brought the game down. I did like the story and the talking sworidians or whatever they were called lol.
Never played the sequel.
Never played symphonia or its sequel

Tales of Eternia was great. I loved the gameplay and the story and world was pretty good, just a little too childish for my tastes. Whats up with main guy characters from this game wearing short shirts that show off their abs ? a little too feminine for me... so the main character doesn't really appeal to me. Almost seems like a really gay version of He-Man or something LOL. But the awesome gameplay and alright story almost made up for it.

Abyss... Great Gameplay, Great Story, just a little childish. And the main character can almost rock the ab exposing clothes without looking like a complete tool ;)

havent played any later ones

I find it Alanis ironic that most people after seeing her artwork think I like Sheena just because of her voluptuous tits and chastise me for it when the only other options are a 14 y/o blonde girl who looks and sounds 8, and an adult woman in a little girl's body.

Thing about Raine is my brother took to Genis pretty quickly, so Raine was kinda like girl-me in the game until Zelos' infatuation with Sheena became evident.
I know how to use techs, I had her Explosion, Health Steal, Defence Lower, & Fumble cards on her B moves and 2 of her summons on C stick up & down. Her crystals gave her

Such as the female lead not being a fighter, in Abyss, Tear was the one with actual combat experience and Luke was the pampered princess, that being said Symphonia was awesome too

Everything that was said here, pretty much. Abyss is my favorite Tales game, with Symphonia being my second favorite, and Vesperia my third. Still have yet to play any of the others besides ToS2, which was good at best.

I loved Tales of Rebirth for its more mature story (and less cliched characters compared to the likes of Symphonia).

Tales of Symphonia was fun with 4 people... Abyssion was kinda easy with our team. I was the healer, my friend was Lloyd, my other friend was Kratos, and a girl who can kick any of our butts in button mashing was on Genis.

To get a glimpse on how fast she is... I forgot which Mario Party it is, but the one with the hammer hitting the button to do the Thwomps (or the wall thingies), she got somewhere in the 200s. >.<

Props to her. I'm treable at thumb button mashing, whenever I have to do it I usaully just put the controller on my lap and wail on it with my pointer.

I only played Tales of Vesperia and it's one of the best games I've ever played. I will try Tales of Symphonia soon and Tales of Graces after that.

I taught her the way to do it, since it was a GC controller (with the A button really big). Hold the controller with both of your feet (from the side) then using both index fingers of both hands button mash like crazy.

I've played Phantasia, and it was fun. I may try Tales of Symphonia or Tales of Graces later, whichever my sister decides to try first.

I think my favorite will always be Symphonia. I had played Destiny II (Eternia) before it but Symphonia was the first to really bring me in to it with it's story and gameplay. I think I played through it 3 or 4 times to try to unlock everything.

Favorite Tales game will always be Phantasia. I think it being the first Tales game may be why. First time playing it through Emulation (wasn't released here yet) I was fascinated by the fact that there was an opening song and such. After that I was hooked. Too bad the GBA version wasn't as impressive.

Vesperia is fucking fantastic! So far, Abyss is a close second.. Need to play Symphonia but I feel like the combat will be lacking without free running.

No, it doesn't. Free running was introduced with Abyss.
