I enjoyed the music from Hans Zimmer for Gladiator because not only was it epic, but it was sweeping and heart-wrenching at times. Other scores include the rejected score from the brilliant composer Gabriel Yared for the movie Troy which for me is 100 times better than Horner's (although gotta admit, I enjoyed Horner's title song work with Josh Groban). And finally, I recently liked the score for the film 300 and Beowulf by Alan Silvestri. Not sure who composed 300...I think it was Tyler Bates. Not 100 percent sure.

I most highly recommend Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI. I feel it has always been One Winged Angel's underrated little-brother.. Just the fact that it goes on for 17 minutes or something like that, and contains 5 movements if I remember correctly, are really all the arguments I need to put it at the very top of my battle-music list:) Escpecially the 3rd movement is just magnificent! It sounds like something Bach could have written.

i found the battle music from crysis to be pretty good. epic-ish.

Naoto_Aeron (thank man!) pointed out to me that the melody I was referring to is Metempsychosis, from the game Ikaruga. I think Ikagura has more epic melodies, but that's the one I enojyed the most.

If you were looking for a nightmarish, cataclysmic clash, I'd suggest either the main table theme from Devil's Crash or Counterattack from the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack. I can give ya either or point your way to them.

All the boss themes from Vagrant Story and Shadow of Colossus is good epic music.

There's different kinds of epic, but for me, the best MUST-HEAR battle themes are from Legend of Mana:

Pain of the Universe

This is a movie theme, but it seems epic for me. Try listening to Phoenix Rises from X-Men: The Last Stand. It reminds me a little bit of Zero from Ace Combat Zero, but the former is epic as well, IMO.

Xenosaga III had the most good epic battle songs on it that i've seen. Sad part is that the best songs in XS:3 are not on the official OST that you can buy. A note on the Xenosaga III songs.. they usually don't get good until about 1/3rd way into the song.

Best Boss Music, Ever.

One of my best battle boss theme : the song god's fist - Legaia duel saga Original Soundtrack. This theme is from Yasunori Mitsuda. The begin is slow, and the epic organ theme begin speed, beautiful.
