Eh I was looking for a specific place where I should put this, and i was thinking about the anime and music forum, but it's more widely spread than that and we'd be discussing the lyrics anyway, so I stuck it here.

What are some lyrics or songs that have really powerful meanings, or some that really touched you? Quotes and things are appreciated too :)

I think a lot of songs from Modest Mouse are very intelligently written, and have powerful hidden meanings in them. And some just make you think.

Example:
Ocean Breathes Salty
"Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in.
In my head, in my heart, in my soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so.
...
Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded in on itself.
And said 'Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath.'
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?"

Just One Set Of Song Lyrics??? Annyways
Iron Maiden : Die With Your Boots On
Another prophet of disaster
Who says the ship is lost
Another prophet of disaster
Leaving you to count the cost
Taunting us with visions
Afflicting us with fear
Predicting war for millions
In the hope that one appears

No point asking when it is
No point asking whos to go
No point asking whats the game
No point asking whos to blame
cos if youre gonna die, if youre gonna die
cos if youre gonna die, if youre gonna die

If youre gonna die, die with your boots on
If youre gonna try, just stick around
Gonna cry, just move along
If youre gonna die, youre gonna die

In 13 the beast is rising
The frenchman did surmise
Through earthquakes and starvation
The warlord will arise
Terror, death, destruction
Pour from the eastern sands
But the truth of all predictions
Is always in your hands

i like modest mouse's lyrics. except the new album, they're not bad but he is trying too hard with the whole concept album thing and it really detracts from the quality of songwriting to have all these references to ships etc all over the place.

i'm going to go for an obvious choice and say that leonard cohen really writes incredible songs. some examples (it's going to be hard to limit myself to just 1 or 2 with most of these choices, for the record, expect an epic post):

From "Famous Blue Raincoat":

"And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way. "

From "The Stranger Song":

"It's true that all the men you knew were dealers
Who said they were through with dealing
Every time you gave them shelter
I know that kind of man
It's hard to hold the hand of anyone
Who is reaching for the sky just to surrender,
Who is reaching for the sky just to surrender.
And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind
You find he did not leave you very much
Not even laughter
Like any dealer he was watching for the card
That is so high and wild
He'll never need to deal another
He was just some Joseph looking for a manger
He was just some Joseph looking for a manger "

From "The Future":

"Give me back my broken night
My mirrored room, my secret life
It's lonely here,
There's no one left to torture
Give me absolute control
Over every living soul
And lie beside me, baby,
That's an order!
Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
And stuff it up the hole
In your culture
Give me back the Berlin Wall
Give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother:
It is murder.

....

When they said repent
I wonder what they meant"

and of course, lou reed has to figure pretty highly. what he can do is absolutely incredible. without using some of the obvious ones ("heroin" etc from Velvet Underground and Nico) more examples:

From "Venus in Furs" (Velvet Underground song):

"Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Down these sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn Imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears"

From "I'll Be Your Mirror" (Velvet Underground):

"I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty that you are
But if you don't, let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you"

From "Some Kinda Love" (Velvet Underground):

"Between thought and expression
Lies a lifetime"

From "Pale Blue Eyes" (Velvet Underground):

"Sometimes I feel so happy,
Sometimes I feel so sad.
Sometimes I feel so happy,
But mostly you just make me mad.
Baby, you just make me mad.
Linger on, your pale blue eyes.
Linger on, your pale blue eyes.

...

If I could make the world as pure and strange as what I see,
I'd put you in the mirror,
I put in front of me."

From "I'm Set Free" (Velvet Underground):

"I'm set free to find a new illusion"

From "The Bed":

"This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room brightly at night

And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling"

From "Romeo Had Juliette":

"Caught between the twisted stars the plotted lines the faulty map
that brought Columbus to New York
Betwixt between the East and West he calls on her wearing a leather vest
the earth squeals and shudders to a halt
A diamond crucifix in his ear is used to help ward off the Fear
that he has left his soul in someone's rented car
Inside his pants he hides a mop to clean the mess that he has dropped
into the life of lithesome Juliette Bell"

um. there are more but i think i'm all lyric'd out for the night. maybe i'll post again later, but those two should be enough to be getting on with.

Black Sabbath's Heaven And Hell

_______

Sing me a song, you're a singer
Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The Devil is never a maker
The less that you give, you're a taker
So it's on and on and on, it's Heaven and Hell, oh well
The lover of life's not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
the sooner you'll know that you're dreaming
So it's on and on and on, oh it's on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell
I can tell, fool, fool!
Well if it seems to be real, it's illusion
For every moment of truth, there's confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And it's on and on, on and on and on....
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's Heaven and Hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell, oh no!
Fool, fool!
You've got to bleed for the dancer!
Fool, fool!
Look for the answer!
Fool, fool, fool!

Reconstruction Site - The Weakerthans

Well, I’m lost
I’m afraid
Rope tying down a leaky boat
To the roof of a car on a road in the dark and it’s snowing
If I’m more then it means less
Last call for happiness
I’m your dress near the back of your knees and your slip is showing
I’m a float in a summer parade
Up the street in the town that you were born in
With a girl at the top wearing tulle
And a Miss Somewhere sash, waving like the queen
Well beauty’s just another word
I’m never certain how to spell
Go tell the nurse to turn the TV back on
Throw away my misery
It never meant that much to me
It never sent a get-well card.

And I'm broke, like a bad joke
Somebody’s uncle told at a wedding reception in 1972
Where a little boy under a table with cake in his hair
Stared at the grown-up feet as they danced and swayed
And his father laughed and talked on the long ride home
And his mother laughed and talked on the long ride home
And he thought about how everyone dies someday
And when tomorrow gets here, where will yesterday be
And fell asleep in his brand new winter coat

Buy me a shiny new machine that runs on lies and gasoline
And all those batteries we stole from smoke alarms
And disassembles my despair
It never took me anywhere
It never once bought me a drink

Basically all of the Weakerthans songs have amazing lyrics though, I reckon they are unsurpassed in that area.

The Pretender - Foo Fighters
Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark
And so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones go marching in... Again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever ready
Are you ready?
I'm finished making sense
Done pleading ignorance
That whole defense

Spinning infinity, Boy
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender? (x2)

In time our soul untold
I'm just another soul for sale... Oh, well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
We're temporary, temporary
Same old story

[The Pretender lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender? (x2)

I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left, I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender? (x4)

So who are you?
Yeah who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Russians - Sting - Fields Of Gold: The Best Of Sting 1984-1994

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us me and you
Is that the Russians love their children too.

Blackwater Park by Opeth

Confessor
Of the tragedies in man
Lurking in the core of us all
The last dying call for the everlost
Brief encounters, bleeding pain
Lepers coiled neath the trees
Dying men in bewildered soliloquys
Perversions bloom round the bend
Seekers, lost in their quest
Ghosts of friends frolic
under the waning moon
It is the year of death
Wielding his instruments
Stealth sovereign reaper
Touching us with ease
Infecting the roots in an instant
Burning crop of disease
I am just a spectator
An advocate documenting the loss
Fluttering with conceit
This doesn't concern me yet
Still far from the knell
Taunting their bereavement
Mob round the dead
Point fingers at the details
Probing vomits for more
Caught in unbridled suspense
We have all lost it now
Catching the flakes of dismay
Born the travesty of man
Regular pulse midst pandemonium
You're plucked to the mass
Parched with thirst for the wicked
Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark
The sun sets forever over Blackwater Park

Sentiment by Cynic

Cosmic mother awaken us in
Thine impartial love for all
Bless us that we be free from
The sway of greed and delusion
Inspire us to build a new world
One in which famine, disease and ignorance
Will be only memories of a dismal past

Creative mother arouse us to know
That we be not lost in the sands
Open our eyes

Creative mother arouse us to know
Inspire us to build a new world
Since forever we've yearned to
Quench what's never fulfilling
Lost endeavours found in a stilled
Mind if we be willing

Conjuring Collapse by Spiral Architect

Conclude with error, idiosycratic deeds
Synthetic habitat
Comprehension. Consciousness. All senses are astray
Infected selfish greed

Unpleasant frame of mind,
reflections of what's behind
Wisdom breeds fragile minds

Wake from his fantasy. Fear mendacious empathy
Ecstatic biased sphere
We are the plaintive race, constructors of predestined decay
A paragon fails

Force of fiction, faking formula of faith
A chameleon with words
Uncertain factors feed a mind so crystal clear
When will this circle end?

Mankind falls from what it breeds
Cast reflections on it's ego's path
Altered minds in altered settings, twisted mind
Collapse into intensity, understand the face of man

Everlasting hunt for truth,
blinded by different views
See through obstructive haze,
and cleanse the human race!
Mankind falls from what it breeds
Conjuring collapse with this ego's path
Altered minds in altered settings made by man
Collapse into intensity. Aftermath of thinking man

elbow and the queens of the stone age have the best lyrics ive heard. beta band are pretty good, and i like the lyrics on neon bible. good lyrics arent easy to come by, though.

'stockport supporters club kindly provided a choirrrrrr' what a fucking beautiful song that is

edit - the first streets album has great lyricism too, but, as if by contrast, a grand dont come for free is fucking terrible and from the sounds of it the latest one surpasses its level of insidious turd.

edit no. 2 - jeff and tim buckley, and nick drake, all exhibit beautifully expressed grasps of the english language. shame they're all dead.

NEVER ENDING MATH EQUATION
I'm the same as I was when I was 6 years old
And oh my God I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything
On a plane, I can see the tiny lights below
And oh my God, they look so alone
Do they really feel anything?
Oh my God, I've gotta gotta gotta gotta move on
Where do you move when what you're moving from
Is yourself?
The universe works on a math equation
that never even ever really even ends in the end
Infinity spirals out creation
We're on the tip of its tongue, and it is saying
We aint sure where you stand
You aint machines and you aint land
And the plants and the animals, they are linked
And the plants and the animals eat each other
Oh my God and oh my cat
I told my Dad what I need
Well I know what I have and want
But I don't know what I need
Well, he said he said he said he said
"Where we're going I'm dead."

TEETH LIKE GOD'S SHOESHINE
From the top of the ocean - Yeah
From the bottom of the sky -Goddamn
Well I get claustrophobic
I can you know that I can
And he said:
"I am not allowed much danger
keep in line you're an old friend stranger.
you'll burn me if effigy and I'll burn you in effigy."
A rattle snake up in buffalo Montana
he bit the leg of the old sheriff
Ha! That boy fell down on his harelip -Ow! Ow!
Well I might be wrong
but you you tag along
and we we all been wronged
and I get dizzier by the mile
Said hell! The money's spent
went to the county line
and paid the rent said "Uh-oh."
Oh! If you could compact your conscience
Oh! And you might.
Oh! If you could bottle and sell it you might have done
Oh! And you might
Oh! If you could compact your conscience
and sell it save it for another time
you might have to use it.
And the televisions gone
Go to the grocery store, buy some new friends
and find out the beginning, the end, and the best of it
Well, do you need a lot of what you've got to survive?
Here's the man with teeth like God's shoeshine
He sparkles shimmers shines
let's all have another Orange Julius
This syrup standing in lines
The malls are the soon to be ghost towns
so long, farewell, good-bye
Take 'em all for the long ride
and you'll go around town
no one wants to be uptight anymore
You can be ashamed
or be so proud of what you've done
but not no one, not now, not ever or anyone
take 'em all for the sense of happiness
that comes from hurting deep down inside
Or you can walk th line and give a shit
I'm on the corner of this and this and this and this
and its all all wrong, and its all all gone
Well, you can add it up and give a shit
go to the family doctor
Its all worth it
and its all all gone, and its all all wrong
Here's the man with teeth like God's shoeshine
He sparkles shimmers shines
let's all have another Orange Julius
Thick syrup standing in lines
The malls are the soon to be ghost towns
so long, farewell, good-bye
And the telephone goes off
pick to receiver up, try to meet ends
and find out the beginning, the end and the best of it

A great story track, this one...

Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day

Golden rod and the 4-H stone
The things I brought you
When I found out you had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone
And he drove his car to the Navy yard
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning through the window shade
When the light pressed up against your shoulder blade
I could see what you were reading

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications you could do without
When I kissed you on the mouth

Tuesday night at the bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael's house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

Oh the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

Sunday night when I cleaned the house
I find the card where you wrote it out
With the pictures of your mother

On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications when I see his face
In the morning in the window

Oh the glory when he took our place
But he took my shoulders and he shook my face
And he takes and he takes and he takes

Both of the following lyrics were written by Donald Fagen & Walter Becker of Steely Dan, and are on their second studio album, Countdown to Ecstasy:

Steely Dan - Razor Boy (1973)

I hear you are singing a song of the past
I see no tears
I know that you know it may be the last
For many years
You'd gamble or give anything
To be in with the better half
But how many friends must I have
To begin with to make you laugh

Will you still have a song to sing
When the razor boy comes
And take your fancy things away
Will you still be singing it
On that cold and windy day

You know that the coming is so close at hand
You feel all right
I guess only women in cages can stand
This kind of night
I guess only women in cages
Can play down
The things they lose
You think no tomorrow will come
When you lay down
You can't refuse

Steely Dan - King of the World (1973)

Hello one and all
Was it you I used to know
Can't you hear me call
On this old ham radio
All I got to say
I'm alive and feeling fine
If you come my way
You can share my poison wine

No marigolds in the promised land
There's a hole in the ground
Where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grande
Is the king of the world
As far as I know

I don't want your bread
I don't need your helping hand
I can't be no savage
I can't be no highwayman
Show me where you are
You and I will spend this day
Driving in my car
Through the ruins of Santa Fe

I'm reading last year's papers
Although I don't know why
Assassins cons and rapers
Might as well die

If you come around
No more pain and no regrets
Watch the sun go brown
Smoking cobalt cigarettes
There's no need to hide
Taking things the easy way
If I stay inside
I might live til Saturday

Concerning the meaning of the lyrics, the former is a cautionary tale about death personified ("Razor Boy"), while the latter is an apocalyptic account of one man's view of the world, which I adamantly believe was propelled by his thoughts on the Nixon administration and the whole Watergate scandal.

Part 1
Judgment day's upon us and I see no one cares.
Lies for death in pools of blood and I'm stoned with fear.
A trigger happy finger solves a problem not a prayer.
I see this world falling apart and I fucking swear

It is the end of days
It is the end of days
We've clearly lost our way

Revelations, dissipation, condemnation
dissolution, do you feel like you're under a gun?
Desperation, condemnation, indignation, terror nation
That's what the world is today!
Hey! Hey!

It is the end of days
It is the end of days
We've clearly lost our way

Judgment day is upon us, I don't care.
Judgment day is upon us, do ya fear?
I'm in a world of shit, I don't care!

Part 2
As the future unfolds in the end of days
Judgment of our times in biblical ways
Our man made gods, genocide is faith
Idea warfare has been engaged
Cannot trust your fellow man at all these days
Sycophants out looking to get paid
Images burned into my face
Pangs of Distress salt my flesh to flay

I constantly fear everything I see
Blood is the fist of authority
Pestilence is my rabid dog unchained
Another road sign marks the end of days
I disregard those who govern me
I hate all of this treachery
I numb my mind and try to walk away
Toward the trail of tears and to the end of days

Face down on pavement and drunk at the end of my days
I hang from a noose that was made to slowly decay
The pangs of distress salt my flesh to slowly flay
Face down on pavement and drunk at the end of my days
The end of days

This is pretty self explanatory. This pretty much sums up how Al feels about the world, and where he feels it's going. And considering what's going on in the world right now, if things continue the way they do, it's bound and determined to happen.

Ladies and gentlemen
Welcome to Washington DC
Home of the Ass Clown
Step right up into the 3,000 ring circus of The Beltway
And witness the impossible
See them grovel, see them lie, see them crawl on their bellies
See real live white collar terrorists in their own natural habitat
See the Department of Homeland Security perfecting new ways of drowning black people
While our health care is subsidizing corporate drug dealers aiding big government and
Spying on everybody

Verse 1
I want to go to the circus
The circus of power
The circus they call Washington
A circle of dishonor
I want to round up the senators
Just like they did in Rome
Feed these Ass Clowns to the lions
Then I can go home

I wanna see it go up in flames

Chorus
Ass Clown
You’re going down

Verse 2
I want to blow up the circus
Bring down the circus of lies
The ultimate goal and purpose
Is no Ass Clown survives
I want to line up the congressmen
And strap them to their missiles
Then I’ll point them at their temples
Then I’ll wave goodbye!

I wanna see it go up in flames

Chorus
Ass Clown
You’re going down

See them stroke each other with bribes as they try on new shades of brown lipstick
See them circle jerk to the latest photos of torture victims
Ass Clown

Verse 3
I hate the three-ring circus
Under the bigtop of deceit
The circus maximus of arrogance
The circus maximus of greed
I want to line up all the judges
And take a gavel to their heads
Only then will there be justice
When all these Ass Clowns are dead

I wanna see it go up in flames

Chorus X2
Ass Clown
You’re going down

See how it’s really done

This needs no explanation.

Material things can't conquer me
Matter nothing to me, only your soul can be free
When we connect, spiritually
I feel you never went away from me
Waking up and I freak

Now it's so hard to breathe
Blood, sweat, and my tears
Make the fear disappear

Now that you are gone
I try staying strong

All these painful years
All these fallin' tears
Will never bring you back
Bring you back to me

I know one day I'll see you again
I know this can't be the end
I know you'll be there waiting for me
Waiting for me

Carry on
Stay strong
Carry on...

Now that you are gone
All these painful things
That make us bleed inside
I try staying strong
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
Dana
Moses
Watch me
Watch me

Oh God, take the pain away
I'll give you my life instead
Oh God, take the pain away
For you, my life I'll trade
Waking up and I freak
Now it's so hard to breathe
Blood, sweat, and my tears
Make the fear disappear

Now that you are gone
I try staying strong

Carry on
Stay strong
Carry on...

This song is mourning the loss of singer Max Cavalera's son and grandson, and it included a guest appearance by Max's oldest son Ritchie. It's sharing the love that these two men had for their children, and how they would easily trade their own lives for their children's lives.

My favorite song by Amon Amarth:

"Annihilation of Hammerfest"

All is lost and foreign kings

Rule the northern realms

Hammerfest, the last outpost

Has fallen to unbearded men

Lords of the bloody cross

Deceived or murdered all of true faith

Now the temple of Thor, where Mjolner is kept

Is under siege

They fear the power of Mjolner

The hammer of Thor

And all their efforts to destroy it have failed

From deep within the frozen ground

Comes a rumbling sound

Ravens scream and wild wolves howl

Sending shivers down christians' spines

As if from nowhere

Dark and grim he appears

The warlord of the Gods comes with force

To retrieve The Crusher

The first man died with a gurgling sigh

When his head was crushed

Painful surprise in his eyes

As his life was snuffed

With raw and brutal force

The warlord breaks the temple doors

The weak back off in fear

On the altar it lies, he lifts the hammer high

And before it he swears:

`Allvise Ygg, Maktige Harjafader

Guda av Asars och vaners att

Hor mina ord, nar som jag svar

Att om tusen vintrar ater ta var ratt?

While he speaks his prayer

Mjolner rests in the air

As if holding breath

Frozen by fear

They gathered stand and stare

And what they see is death

A laughing cry fill the shivering night

He lets the hammer strike

A bolt of lightning bright

Rips the darkened sky

Fire of doom - Ignite!
___

Yeah Hammerfest is a real place, up in Norway.

Sometimes people make use of false guilts, so they, find an excuse for closing their eyes to their very real guilts

I'm not feeling human anymore
Half connected all the time
Each night I document the things I've done
The pointless points I've made for stupid reasons

Every night
Every night
Every night I'm always the same
You're pounding on my brain
Tonight
And every night
I lie down clenching up my teeth
Trying to fall asleep

I've sat and smoked a billion cigarettes
And wished to hell you were here
My stained and calloused fingers hold a pen
Scratching apologies to you, too late, too little

Every night
Every night
Every night I pay off my debts
Trust me I don't forget
Tonight
And every night
I will analyse everything
Make myself count the ways

I fucked up today

Bob Marley & The Wailers - No Woman, No Cry

No woman no cry
No woman no cry
No woman no cry
No woman no cry

Said I remember when we used to sit
In a government yard in Trenchtown
Observing the hypocrites
As they would mingle with the good people we meet
Good friends we have
Oh, good friends we've lost
Along the way
In this great future
You can't forget your past
So dry your tears, I say

No woman no cry
No woman no cry
Here little darlin', don't shed no tears
No woman no cry

Said I remember when we use to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire lights
As it was, log would burnin' through the nights
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge
Of which i'll share with you
My feet is my only carriage
So i've got to push on through
But while i'm gone i mean it
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright

So woman no cry
No woman no cry
Woman, little sister
Don't shed no tears
No woman no cry

Tupac - Changes

Come on come on

I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself
is life worth living should I blast myself?
I'm tired of bein' poor and even worse I'm black
my stomach hurts so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
pull the trigger kill a nigga he's a hero
Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares
one less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope & let 'em deal to the brothers
give 'em guns step back watch 'em kill each other
It's time to fight back that's what Huey said
2 shots in the dark now Huey's dead
I got love for my brothers but we can never go nowhere
unless we share with each other
We gotta start makin' changes
learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers
and that's how it's supposed to be
How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that's the way it is

[Bridge w/ changing ad libs]
Come on come on
That's just the way it is
Things'll never be the same
That's just the way it is
aww yeah
[Repeat]

I see no changes all I see is racist faces
misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
one better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
'cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
and only time we chill is when we kill each other
it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President, uhh
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change
try to show another way but you stayin' in the dope game
Now tell me what's a mother to do
bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you
You gotta operate the easy way
"I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way
sellin' crack to the kids " I gotta get paid,"
Well hey, well hey that's just the way it is

[Bridge]

[Talking: ]
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive.

And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace
It's war on the streets & the war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs
so the police can bother me
And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do
But now I'm back with the blacks givin' it back to you
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up,
crack you up and pimp smack you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
they get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone
But tell the cops they can't touch this
I don't trust this when they try to rush I bust this
That's the sound of my tool you say it ain't cool
but my mama didn't raise no fool
And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped
& I never get to lay back
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay back
some punk that I roughed up way back
comin' back after all these years
rat tat tat tat tat that's the way it is uhh

some things'll never change

[Bridge 'til fade]

great song, kind of sad that it's still completely relevant a decade later.

Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I wake in the morning,
Fold my hands and pray for rain.
I got a head full of ideas
That are drivin' me insane.
It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
Well, he hands you a nickel,
He hands you a dime,
He asks you with a grin
If you're havin' a good time,
Then he fines you every time you slam the door.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
Well, he puts his cigar
Out in your face just for kicks.
His bedroom window
It is made out of bricks.
The National Guard stands around his door.
Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
Well, she talks to all the servants
About man and God and law.
Everybody says
She's the brains behind pa.
She's sixty-eight, but she says she's twenty-four.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
But everybody wants you
To be just like them.
They sing while you slave and I just get bored.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

when in need of powerful lyrics, always look to tool!

Tool - Vicarious

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used the poison in his tea
[and / he] kissed [him / her] goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies

Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother, holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Tool - Parabol

So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful.
Wide eyed and hopefully wild.

We barely remember what came before this precious moment,
Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal. All this pain is an illusion.
