Is it OK if I only use three people all the time, or should I level everyone evenly?

I level everyone evenly but there isn't any real reason not to pick your preferred 3 and stick with them except for, from a strategical standpoint, if your main party was wiped out in a tough battle you'd be relying on your reserve characters to revive and heal them and if they're shitty, good chance they'll be wiped out too ;O

After you're about level 30 or 35, it should be fine to focus on leveling up one main party of 3, but make sure that your backup party is never less than like 15 levels below, so on the off chance your main party gets decimated, your backup party can survive long enough to revive your main guys.

I suppose it would be OK, but kinda agree with Mossy. It better to keep as many even as possible, that way you'll be ready for anything , and get to collect more items etc :)

The way I did it for most of the game was to focus on levelling one character (Basch), and use him as my tank/damage dealer with two supporting characters at a slightly lower level. This combined with Decoy/Protect/Haste/Shell etc works well against most bosses for most of the game since they are usually 1 on 1 fights.

I did level up the others more towards the end and I think it's important to keep everyone's levels up reasonably highly just in case the worst happens.

What I do for levelling up is I keep Vaan as my Tank and alternate the rest to keep up with the current difficulty of the situation. It works quite well as you will always have Vaan, or whoever you choose (I should have chosen Balthier! DAMMIT!) li0ke a bazillion levels infront, so your guaranteed to win every fight as long as you keep up. At the mo' on my game (first visit ti Bofonheim Port) Everyone is Level 38 and Vaan is Level 52! I win everything!

This is my second time through the game. In the first, I had a very balanced team and I leveled everyone up equally. Now I'm having my core group and level them till 99. The others are still around 20, they'll get their turn. I find it that this makes the game very very easy. Since you spend all your time focussing on just three characters instead of 6.

On the other hand, I can't switch members when I am in a tight spot, but given that they are rather "over leveled" this hasn't presented me with any problems.

i just leveled all my characters to 99 evenly, so my second party was just as strong as my first party. go to the nabreus deadlands where you had to fight roblon and all those dead bones keep respawning. if you have the embroidered tippet equipped on everyone, they will gain around 3000 exp with each kill.

That's exactly the same thing that im doing. I think its better to level everyone to lvl 99, and its not really a problem for me, because its like, "Oh, they levelled already? Ok. *switches from Vaan, Balthier, and Fran to Basch, Ashe, and Penelo.* " and its pretty easy. Next playthrough, I'm going to get my characters to lvl 20 before I go through Tomb of Raithwall, lvl 35 before Stillshrine, lvl 55 before Archades, and lvl 70 before Giruvegan. xD I'll be definitely having no problems with bosses, etc. ^_^

My characters are all at lvl 71 at the moment, haven't even gone to the Ridorana Cataract yet, or even the Pharos, I just obtained Zeromus and Ultima. I finished up the last of my hunts for now, working on getting more ultimate weapons (Tournesol, Whale Whisker and Sagittarius) and getting Chaos and Zodiark. Then I'll finish off that Fafnir and head to Ridorana Cataract. xD

I know I could finish it off right now, but there's no hurt in being extra confident that you'll win. :)

I don't know how anyone can grind to Lv 70+ before the Ridorana Cataract. It's so boring to mindlessly grind, and you don't really need to grind for the majority of storyline bosses. Also, grinding makes bosses boringly easy and takes any challenge out of completing the game.

Lvl 99 isn't necessary at all, but I kept everyone even through at the game, and just finished it at lvl 49. Being higher than that obviously doesnt hurt, but just leveling 3 characters could be very bad towards the ending

This game is surprisingly easy to level up, thus i chose to 1st play thru the game without leveling up often to get the FELL of Challenge and of course without getiing any good items since i miss them too much...
2nd time only them i focus on Leveling the characters and i found it rather easy to level up, i reach lhusu mines and now i'm like lvl20...:P...
So, i don think is hard to Level up the characters evenly...and i encourage people to do...is you wanna play for safe...

if you have seen the negelurmur (rare minster in the shilshrine of the meridiam
i spell bad)if you set your gambits right, you can go to bed and wake up with your characters still fighting. If you do, you just dont like fun.
There is a guide on it i found somewhere else that told me.

There are more efficient places to level up. I tried the negalmuur trick, left it running for 3 hours or so, and gained one level (chain of 1000+). It doesn't work very well at higher levels.

Kill skeletons. Lhusu, Golmore, and Nabreus Deadlands.

I should seriously try that because I am getting impatient with leveling up all of my characters. But I am OC about leveling up everyone to 99, or to the maximum abilities. It's been like that with every FF I have played. All of my characters so far are at 56 and I have too much to do.
Basch is my tank too! :D

you should really keep the teams at even(ish) levels in case your main party is taken down - I did this and beat the Undying at level 50 - but there is no reason to only build up three characters. If you only build up three they will probably be overly strong and defeat most bosses with ease, but, then again, if they die you've kinda had it...

It really depends on your style of play. If you're willing to risk it, then you can have just a high-level party, but you risk what Slavka says.

Hey sacredmoon, Basch is a nice tank(highest hp&str, but lowest vit(WHAAAAT???))
By the way, I started a new game. At the moment, I have Vaan and Penelo around lv23!!
I plan on taking them higher(about 50 or sth?!?!?!)(Vaan mainly, so I won't have trouble with the others when I obtain them), and then progress with the story, because I'm doing calculations on reaching -really close to- Maximum of his Max HP(and MP).
PS:the other stats are always the same at lv 99 if you didn't notice.
I lv up on the werewolves and on the westersand. Mainly Vaan, because Penelo is a phoenix down support(too bad I don't have the PARTY option in the menu, yet.)

I don't even bother leveling up the rest of my characters. I just stuck to 3 main ones. I had Ashe, Vaan, and Balthier around 70 by the games end and i did fine with those three. The rest I left at really low levels, like around 15 or so.

i go into a place that is pimps and use one person and equip them with the embroided tippet so you get double exp
