(Well i currently own suikoden v, ffx, ffxii, steambot chronicle for the ps2. and no rpg games for the ds)

DS:
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl(if you like this)
...can't remember more right now

PS 2:
Rogue Galaxy
.hack//G.U. Vol. 2(possibly)
Odin Sphere

Upcoming top DS rpg's:
Heroes of Mana
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

Upcoming top PS 2 rpg's:
Shin Megamei Tensei: Persona 3
Wild Arms 5
.hack//G.U. Vol. 3: Redemption(possibly)
Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess

...you need an Xbox 360, it may have the top rpg's coming out for it. :D Lost Odyssey!!!

Well, so far, for the DS, the only ones I can come up on the top of my head are FFIII DS, Children of Mana and of course the Pokemon titles (whether you like the Pokemon titles or not depends on your taste tho). According to RPGamer, tho, a considerable amount of titles are due soon, including a few Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Harvest Moon and Tales titles.

For the PS2, try X-2. Rent first, tho. People I know either love it or hate it, no one sits on the fence for this one (Agent calls it a classic, while my FF maniac colleague here at work calls it a Sailor Moon wannabe). Odin Sphere looks promising albeit wierd, Dawn of Mana looks good, and there is of course the Tales and Star Ocean series.

Of course, let's not forget that the DS can play GBA games, and the PS2 can play PSOne games, so you have pretty much a very large library RPGs to choose from.

Go to metacritic.com/games

go to advanced search, search under Ps 2 and DS for role playing game and list them chronologically and only list games released and only list games higher than 70% ranking. Research all the games ont he list, especially the ones over 85%

By the way, waht's the #1 ranking?

I liked Rogue Galaxy enough to buy it, it's a great game but not super ultimate, which is why I am not playing it anymore. I have only a few games that I will beat.

I bought PS 2 again in November, so far I"ve only beaten FF VII: Dirge of Cerberus. I bought Xbox 360 a week and a half ago also. This fall I'll beat:

Final Fantasy XII
Alundra 1
Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect

Here are games I was planning to play(or started) but decided not to:
Rogue Galaxy
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Blue Dragon
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I'm just going to say this because I can, but I've played FFXII: Revenant Wings, and it does not feel like an RPG at all but more like a Real-Time Strategy game. I don't know if you're going to want that one if you actually want RPGs.

Yeah, well, it's not really a normal HM game. It's an action RPG with HM elements.

Nah, they're just set in the same universe (ours), but they're all standalone games. There is a major plot twist in SO3 that will effect previous games in the series, though.

Yea it was announced as a Real-time strategy rpg, they never said it was a traditional rpg or something.

How good is the game? Tentatively I don't have it on my purchase list but it's high on the list for possibilities. Where did you play it?

I think it is developed by something other that Square Enix but S.E. publishes it.

I know how to read Japanese. So I played the Japanese version. I beat the game.

The game has a decent story that's a bit childish, but just a bit. Also there's the real-time strategy thing where you're controlling tons of summons at the same time. It doesn't involve too much tactics, but it's still pretty hard...I guess. Well, at least it is if you don't level, which I didn't.

And also, there aren't any random encounters or anything. There are "mission" things which you have to complete throughout the game, whether they be mandatory, optional sidequest like ones, or just free ones which are just battles you can do over and over with no story to them whatsoever.

I don't think so. Especially since the first was released for the Super Famicom in Japanese only.

I read somewhere that the story is actually somewhat interconnected, but only vaguely (i.e. the protagonist in the second game is actually the son of the protagonist in the first game, but that doesn't affect the gameplay at all).

One series that hasn't been mentioned thus far for PS2 is the Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga series. I loved both titles for their great and intricate battle system, mature storytelling, unique music, and disturbing demon designs.

I would also recommend the Xenosaga series if you like futuristic RPGs that revolve around a complex and rich story.

For DS, you could always check out Final Fantasy III or Luminous Arc.

I want to beat Xenogears! I ended up choosing Brave Fencer Musashi over Xenogears and Parasite Eve, which were all out in the same fall. BFM is good but I should have gotten Xenogears, it's fame is high years later.

A little overzealous reaction, but I'm in your boat. Trace Memory is probably closer to a puzzle game than anything. I don't see many role-playing elements in it, if any besides the overhead perspective...and that barely qualifies if it even does.

As far as I know that one's not even marketed as an RPG, just an adventure game.

I guess though, seeing as there are the number of RPG games in existence there are which are truly adventure games, that it's only too easy for some people to not realise what seperates the two.

The best PS2 RPG series IMO is Xenosaga... You have to play them in order (Well, kind of. The beginning of each game has a summary of the previous one, but it's better to play all the way through.)

The second one is skippable, it has a terrible battle system... But the first and third games are pretty much amazing. I highly recommend them. :)

I also recommend the Suikoden series, it's pretty good, and you can get through it without playing them in chronological order. Although, the best ones BY FAR are the first two, for PS1.

I don't know much about DS RPG's...

I don't think it matters at all. I've never played Xenogears, myself, and Xenosaga is one of my favorite series of all time. I think the only real similarity is that the savepoints look a lot alike.

Rogue Galaxy:far too praised imho...

Odin Sphere:kinda nice as long as u learn the different gameplay among the characters(I h8 pooka prince i couldn't finish his story for 3 days-goddamned last boss :/)

Valkyrie Profile 2:Silmeria:i love the battle system, the storyline is good.only bad thing(for some other ppl,not me)is the 2d...

Atelier Iris 3:Grand Phantasm:more for anime fans...and kinda easy i think

Shining Force EXA:again for us anime fans though it's gonna be a bit boring after a while in battles....

i don't know which kind of gaming experience u like and i haven't played the other 2...
it's kinda good but not what i had heard...
and after a while it gets...not hard...but a bit complex...
i am kind of perfectionist and i just couldn't keep up with the main quest and all subquests/missions/etc...
so i just abandoned nearly everything except the main quest but that was the point where i got bored...
i've found much better rpg's for my style of game so i haven'yt bothered continuing since then...

Hmm...

Looking for a descent RPG, I really dig all the FF's (sept X-2), the Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, Suikoden series & Xenoseries (Xenogears included)...... it might be a descent purchase, they have it used for around 14, and new for 30. I saw someone pumping up Odin Spere too.

.hack/GU trilogy for the PS2. Very original story. Characters are about as 'real' as they can get. (Party members all have personal issue and does it show!)Villain is a real @$$hole that you will enjoy beating the crap out of.
Great game if you are the type of gamer who tries to do everything possible.(Matter of fact it's kind of encouraged!)
The main character isn't just stuck with one kind of weapon. As the game progresses, he will be able to use the total of four different weapons.
Down side is that the dungeons tend to get a little repetitive and long. Other than the issues with the dungeons, its a pretty good game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne/Digital Devil Saga/DDS2/Persona 3/Devil Summoner.

Of those five, Devil Summoner is the cheapest.
Nocturne and the others are pretty pricy and harder to find (besides P3? I think it's pretty recent isn't it...?)

Necro!

While I can't comment on PS2, I'd like to point out that the entire Mother trilogy has been released for the GBA in Japan. Go play them if you've never experienced Earthbound. That one's available in English, and you may be able to find an IPS patch to translate another version of Mother 1. Mother 3 currently has a translation project going on; google is your friend.

Two of Namco's Tales games have been released for the DS in Japan. These *might* come to the US some day.

Square Enix has several good offerings for the DS - Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV, and a BUNCH of Dragon Quest games are coming out; check out It's a Wonderful World, which is being released in the US as The World Ends With You. Lastly, if you like cameo appearances of FFI characters in a sports game (lol?) check out Mario Hoops: 3 on 3.
