A grilled cheese sandwich, (also known as cheese toasty or toasted cheese sandwich) is a form of toasted sandwich that consists of two slices of bread and at least one slice of cheese melted in between.[1]

There are various methods of preparation which vary depending on taste and convention. In the United States it is most common for the assembled sandwich to be buttered on the outside and placed on a griddle, pan, cast iron skillet, or dedicated sandwich maker to be heated (technically, the word 'grilled' in the name of the meal is inaccurate).[2] Once the bread on the bottom half of the sandwich has reached a toast-like texture, the sandwich is flipped, and continues cooking until the other side has toasted or the cheese has melted. Another method of cooking the grilled cheese is to butter one slice of bread on both sides, grill the bottom side until the butter melts, then flip. Wait for the inside to be grilled, flip and add the cheese. Then butter the other slice of bread and grill then place the slices of bread together. In the United Kingdom the sandwich would most commonly be grilled either (open face as cheese on toast) under a grill (broiler) or, more usually, in a toasted sandwich maker. In the UK the sandwich would not normally be cooked in the American Fashion, using a frying pan.

In the UK, cheddar is most commonly used whilst in the US, traditionally American cheese is used;[2] however, other cheeses such as gouda, Velveeta cheese and Swiss can be used. It is often supplemented with additional ingredients, most notably bacon and/or tomato, but also avocado, tuna, meat, pickles, herbs, spices, and condiments such as mustard, tomato sauce, or Worcestershire sauce.[1][3][4] It is traditionally accompanied by tomato soup.[2] Some recipes call for grilled cheese sandwiches to be served with ketchup as a condiment.[5]

The grilled cheese sandwich is a variation on the very old combination of bread and cheese. The modern grilled cheese sandwich (American cheese and sliced white bread) began in the 1920s as an open sandwich. The additional slice of bread became common in the 1960s. In the early 1970s, a Canadian restaurant owner by the name Dach Johnston was credit for the addition of bacon to the sandwhich, however, evidence of this has not yet been proven.

Grilled cheese has been a popular lunch choice for generations, and the variations on this simple sandwich abound, depending on where you are in the world. While American or cheddar cheese are the popular choice for this treat in the United States, some parts of Europe prefer Swiss or Gouda cheese to fill their bread slices. There are also a number of additions that can go into a grilled cheese sandwich, like ham, tomato, herbs and spices, or sauces like ketchup or mustard. Some of these will go between the slices of bread before the grilling takes place, and some are sprinkled on the top or used as a dip. Many Canadians enjoy dipping their sandwiches in ketchup or applesauce, while people in the United States tend to prefer their sandwiches with tomato soup or French fries on the side.

There are many gadgets on the market today that will grill up a lovely sandwich for you to enjoy. If you dont own one of the specialty grillers however, a good old-fashioned cast iron pan that is well seasoned will do. In fact, if you have a brand new cast iron skillet, a grilled cheese sandwich will be the perfect choice for seasoning your new pan. Bread can run the gamut from a hearty wheat to a crusty white, depending on your preference. Texas toast can make a yummy choice, as can many rye breads. The good news about selecting a bread for your grilled cheese is that once you have added plenty of butter and melted cheese, almost any bread will fit the bill in a tasty way.

Butter is the next ingredient for making your sandwich, and can be spread directly onto the bread or melted into the pan. It is a good idea not to skimp on the butter, although a well-seasoned pan can add plenty of flavor with a smaller amount of butter needed. Your cheese can be American, Havarti, cheddar, or Swiss, depending on your own tastes and preferences. Place your first piece of bread in the pan with the buttered side down, add the cheese of your choice, and place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese with the buttered side up. Grill the first side until the bread is nicely toasted, then flip your sandwich and cook the other side until the cheese inside is melted.

This thread made me cuckoo for grilled cheese sandwich. I miss those days when I used to wake up and there would be a nice grilled cheese sandwich waiting for me. I would salivate because I knew the joy of the world was melted in with the cheese. When the first bite would be taken my taste buds would wish they could lick themselves. The second bite...wait I'm stopping this. You get the point.

Grilled cheese sandwiched are good.
