My PS2 won't play Chrono Trigger. It plays FFIV in the same package as well as all my other PS RPGs. Is there any other people who have had problems with only Chrono Trigger playing? I was wondering if my PS2 is possessed by Satan because it's not letting me play my favorite RPG. I do have a launch system and I bought it used so that could be a problem.

The problem could be described as when I pop in the disc it makes a really bad whirring noise like the disc is having the shit scratched out of it. Any advice on how to remedy this besides buying a new PS2?

Funny avie and sig and sorry, don't have the funds at this moment though I intend to one day. Once I do, those bastards at Sony will have removed the emotion chip from the PS3 thus rendering my PS2 and PS playing ability completely out of the picture. Damn Sony taking out the emotion chip *grumble grumble*

You might want to just buy a new PS2. The launch PS2's have a few kinks in them but as far as I can tell, the Slimline PS2 is kink-free. That would be my best bet.

Were you able to play Chrono Trigger before on this PS2?

You're not missing out on much ftr. The Chrono Trigger PSX port is supposed to have load times that are so awful it basically makes the game unplayable.

I've got it playing once and they're not so bad really. Chrono Trigger plays on my friend's slimline. I just don't have the funds right now to afford one. I might in a few weeks. Oh well, I'll just play Star Ocean 2 and FFIV, those still work.

sounds like a scratched disk, that whirring is the edge of a cd, scraping against the disk drive, doesn't hurt the system just, is annoying. but yeah most likely is scratched.

The disc has normal surface scratches and none of my other PS games make that noise. Could I perhaps use a buffer and that work. Is there anyway to position the disc so that it doesn't scratch against the disk drive?

EDIT: And by normal surface scratches I mean, nothing that affects play.

no it's just the way the disk is, the edge is just a bit chipped It shouldn't affect gameplay. Also any scratch can affect gameplay, but if you've gotten it to play before do what you did before,

Well I boiled it, cleaned it 3 times and then let it run in my overheated CD-ROM drive on my PC. It now works perfectly with no grinding noise either. Thanks for all the advice. I never thought I would have to boil a disc though.

Eesh. I wouldn't even do that. But glad it works.

Disc boiling has always worked for me, surprisingly. However, all of those times have been with music CD's; I never tried it with game discs.

By the way, if you're going try the boiling cleaning method, please do so at your own discretion. If you don't know what you're doing, you could seriously screw your discs.

I've never heard of that kind of method. I've heard about putting in a toilet and flushing it, using toothpaste, and even using car wax.

disc boiling? I've heard of microwaving, tooth-paste, never boiling.

i'm sure you dont' really leave it to boil the entire duration right? i mean..it's too hot!

maybe boil water, and immerse it and take it out quick or something but... O_O

perharps boiling your game was a bad idea? idk, it sounds bad to me.

I let the water get to boiling and submerge the disc for ten seconds, readable side facing up so as not to scratch it. It works every time for me and yes, don't do it unless you know what you're doing. If you leave it in there for too long, yes, even 13 seconds is too long, the disc could be forever screwed. I warned you so you can't sue me either.

BTW, never use toothpaste, screws the disc up to the point of no return. I lost my first copy of Spyro 2 that way. That bastard online said it worked too. Take my example, don't use toothpaste or you may lose a precious platformer and have to rebuy it.

I bought a Maximo game scratched beyond recognition, I used toothpaste, and a bit of "angling"(changing the angl to avoid the scratches), it worked just fine.

maybe the type of toothpaste you use matters. i think the basic idea is to fill in the cracks with the paste?

I was reading about the toothpaste method and found that gel based toothpaste isn't recommended.

For the record, I've never tried a disc fix with toothpaste, but I'll consider it next time I'm having problems with a disc.

I was just about to say that. My old Phat PS2 had tons of issues when it came to playing PSOne games and even some PS2 games... however, I bought a Silver PS2 Slim about a month ago and it plays everything without a problem. That includes Blue Bottom games... I <3 my Growlanser. :D

I have that same problem with different games, most notably the newer, highly graphical games - I guess it's the PS2 bug of the 1st/2nd gen systems. Anyways
I figured out that it was the alignment of the eye from my constant use of playing it sideways - the loader struggles to close, and also does that same load skipping noise.
So I simply did what no one should ever do, and opened it up, and carefully cleaned the eye with a Q-tip and alcohol. After that, it plays fine. The only problen I have now, is that switching games - depending on the game - causes the problem to comeback. What sucks is that I can't play certain PS1 games like GT2. :(

My PSX (Circa 2000) and PS2 (Circa 2001) both had problems with the Final Fantasy Chronicles discs; sometimes the games would load, other times, no. Just, no. Most likely a problem with the printing of the game, and not on account of your system. FFC was essentially a malfunction burned onto two discs.

You could pop the top and readjust the disk tray, but multiple problems could occur at that point...disk read error...can't play anything but Chrono Trigger...things of that nature. If you don't have money, find a good friend and ask to borrow his PS2 for a lil while, just until you get the game beat. That's all I got.
