Wait, Votoms didn't come before Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam was the first real type robot series. Macross, Votoms and Dougram came afterwards. The Votoms' biggest pro is they're more realistic sized, a Gundam is a big target that practically yells out shoot me!

Oh yeah, much grittier. Even it's spin-off OVA Armor Hunter Mellowlink was very gritty, a guy trained to kill Votoms with a big rifle. Good stuff.

Armor Hunter Mellowlink is around as a torrent file, though it might need to be seeded by now. A short movie The Last of the Red Shoulders was also around.

Just look for torrents of them and you might come upon them.
