im not even sure whether these files can be opened but if they can be opened, i dont know hOW to do it?! does anyone have a bright idea about it?
im asking because the music tracks of a game called Evolution GT are in that format. they're like "music01.rws" "music02.rws" etc. so if anyone has any useful info on that i would appreciate hearing it.

Bad news Game use headerless IMA Adpcms and i hate add headers for this codec. Good news -> there is a converter -> http://www.MegaShare.com/244017

(Converter add only the correct header)

.RWS = RenderWare Sound

Get ADPCM Player v1.44h or any newer version available. The end. Problem solved.

Hmmmm. I had motoGP 08 and that has rws files, and all I had to do was scan them then push play, and it would work. If it doesn't play when you hit the play button, check if it asks to set interleave. If so, just set it to 10 just to see if it works. If not, lemme get one of those files.

Hi ILL ViLLaiN,

I got nothing as well. I don't understand why it doesn't play it. Adpcm player plays renderware sound fine. I even tried MFaudio, and it just gives me static. Could it just be that specific file? Have you tried playing the .rws files straight from the game? By the way, what game are you trying to rip?

12345a needs help with rws file. Try checking out the file he uploaded works.

ok. well i think i was just lucky because i didnt face any other rws files in my life except for this evo gt tracks. and the reason i was lucky is because there was a program to convert these things but some sTRANGE DETAIL: program had evo gt pictures in it. so i dont think it actually works for any other rws files.

plus another info: i read somewhere that the same caption for files (like .xxx) might be sometimes used for different programs. i mean 12345a's problem with another rws file rather than the music of evo gt, might not be solved by my converter program. if you catch my drift.

It doesn't work for me.
I just want to find a way to convert Rws files into mp3s!
Any other choices on a way to convert Rws files?

Ekszbox-ABX v1.4 - it worked with any RWS which couldn`t be processed by that EvoGT converter (all games it is compatible with are 1) Scuadra Corse Alfa Romeo, 2) Evolution GT, 3) Broken Sword3, 4) Super bikes - Riding challenge). I used Ekszbox to rip Ducati world championship and Micro machines4 but it capitulated before Jacked while EvoGT converter extracted all music with a constant hissing :(

Also. ILL ViLLaiN mentioned he used ADPCM player (Cube player maybe?) to rip MotoGP 08 while I used toWAV. So try toWAV on your RWS

Do you think it will work with a PS2 Frogger Ancient Shadow? The music files are RWS-type. I tried Sox, audacity and even making the .rws into a .mp3. Didn't work.

Haven`t ever ripped it so I dunno

Not even the Adpcm player worked. I'm almost at my wit's end. I wonder what other converters are out there that might work.
Never mind, problem solved.

I really hate to bump an old thread, but does anyone have a link or copy of the above converter?

I have some .RWS files, and have been searching all over for a converter.

i will check if i still have it. will update here. are you asking for it to rip evo gt tracks or something else?

I have some PS2 ISO's and they use the .RWS format for music.

currently this looks to be the most promising one. download is in the #1 post: EkszBox-ABX v1.4 - Scenyx Entertainment Community (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=565222)

also i checked my stash and didnt find a trace of that old evo gt converter that i had used. i will keep looking tho i hope this solves your conversion problems.

and ALSO i read previously in this thread that rws files stood for RenderWave Sound files but i also discovered now that they could be standing for Resource Workshop data file as well. watch out.

let me know if it doesnt work :)

Thanks for the link, but when I try to extract the files, I get a generic extention, and when I rename it to .wav, my media player will crash.
Am I missing a setting, or is there another one I can try?

tuix00
09-29-2012, 04:32 PM
there must be at least a few other ones you can try. i will keep looking for them daily and if i find some things i will post here :) there shouldnt be any settings for it. wmplayer will crash when it doesnt have the neccessary codecs and stuff. but i dont think thats the case. because usually renaming that stuff just doesnt work, it has to be converted first. then i understand that the link is just an extractor yes? if so, we need a converter for you, not an extractor. OR an extractor AND a converter both at the same time.

what we want to do is extract those stuff, rename them to rws, and then use a converter to put them in wav mp3 whatever format.

i should be able to find something soon. not blizzard(tm) soon :)

First off,

that old Evo GT converter
is still deposited in CTPAX-X file archive (http://ctpax-x.ru/index.php?goto=files&show=57&lang=en), that`s an HQ of coders team which author of this program was a part of. I don`t think it comes in handy in this particular case though.
Secondly, EkszBox was developed with original Xbox in mind so that it can and should extract Xbox ADPCM (slight variation of IMA ADPCM) embedded in RWS containers found on respective platform just fine (however it dumps almost everything including Xbox ADPCM to files with WAV extension therefore you will probably not be able to play or even convert them unless you acquire any respective tools/plugins) but don`t get your hopes up too high as it may not work with PS2 formats. If it`re working with PS2 versions then there`s quite a possibility that interleaved Sony ADPCM is used. Try scanning your files with Cube media player, FastElbja`s ADPCM player or MFAudio (although the last one is surely the most outdated of them all).
