Obvious FF2 spoilers ahead.

Minwu from FFII. No corny backstories and severe emotional problems here. Minwu needs no character development, he let's his white magic do the talking. The game showcases his awesomeness by giving you him quite early into the game (complete with a full set of white magic at quite high levels).

Minwu is taken away from you some time later. From that point on the players goal is not to save the world from the emperor and his empire. Oh no. The player only wishes to advance because there is a chance that Minwu may become playable sometime later. This goal is almost brought into fruition later ahead when Minwu is confronted before giving you Ultima, a spell almost as badass as him. He unselfishly sacrifices himself to grant you this spell so that you can defeat the emperor that you know so little about.

Oh man, I loathe Minwu. And II. But I like the pirate girl. She deserves to be in a better game :p

i can list a few that are really up there, but i think everyone will agree with me when i say that if this charecter had more playtime he would be hands down number one:

Well here are some of the reasons Zack is really cool and awesome ,he`s a really great person and would never forget his friends he would do what ever he could to protect them and he is a kind caring person and would do anything in his power to put things right he`s reallly strong and for gods sake he`s a first class soldier.He saves cloud and from those stupied people [who are probaliy smarter than me]but he saves cloud and dies for cloud to let him carry on with his life.

He`s a selfless person he would take care of his friends and would never leave one behind in last order he was trying to talk to sephiroth and sephiroth was one of his friends.He`s a helpful and funny definally funny he could look at the optimistic side of things when things could be bad,he`s a slacker,I think only in others peoplrs opinoins he`s a slacker and loves to pull pranks and get laughs, he was clouds best friend.When he was running from the shira he stoped to grab cloud he could have left him therebut he didn`t so that shows selflessness which I`ll just proving my point from the top.

He`s personality of so many things he`s got great fashin sense because cloud does wear one of his outfits :p lol anyway,in every game or in most games he has a different hair styles that`s also cool because most characters only have one hair styles he`s got like how many different hair styles even if you say they all look the same they aren`t one could be longer than the other and the others he has really short hair and then different pieces in the front of his face.

The truth is that Squaresoft does not give too much info about Zack to us.
SE on the other hand, with the FF7 compilation, milked the story .

Even so, I don't think Zack ever had a solid backround. I mean, they never focused on him in FFVII like they did for Nanaki or Tifa. He was Aeris' love and the saviour of Cloud. (the latter I wonder how many people actually saw that when playing FFVII, I for one didn't, but learnt about it years later)

Yes, Sephiroth is highly overrated, but I believe with most people, for the wrong reasons. If you ask someone, it's just because he looks "cool", has an awesome sword, and kicks a**. However, in my opinion, Sephiroth was a far more interesting character before he went crazy for "mother", and you'll know moreso if you play Crisis Core.

Also, I agree with the characters you've stated, all of them are cool. =D I also like Auron, the Cids(hehe), and especially... Cactuar! =P

Truthfully, it's quite hard to pick an overall favorite, but I suppose that's a good thing because it means we care for the characters and the story surrounding them(which in tern means Square made a good game, or at least memorable characters and/or story). =)

Right now I'm playing CC and putting the peices together... Sephiroth vs. Genesis FMV was awsome. My opinion hasn't changed sofar. Angeal just gets in the way alot. I wish there was a smack Hojo button on the PSP, all that trash he likes to talk in the training room.

Compared to who most of the posters in this thread are naming, Celes and Terra are goddesses.

Anyway, since I haven't actually named a character (or a few) yet, here's my short list:

Celes, FFVI
Vivi, FFIX
Delita, FFT
Balthier, FFXII

Balthier.

Hands down.

Balthier doesn't seem to be as developed as a lot of other FF characters although he is probably the second best developed character in FFXII after Basche IMO.
