i'm not even looking for a complete soundtrack (not that the game had much of one to begin with). i'm just looking for the opening cinematic song. god i love that beast!

a youtube entry can be found here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr3Mp11VTRo

turns out it was also included as a downloadable bonus track for Samba De Amigo from seganet, if it matters

Its called "Can you become a rent a hero for mankinds sake" and was also featured on the "Fighters Megamix" game. Its available from the Galbadia Hotel on the album "Sega Saturn History - Last Volume" track number 109. http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/173

I also believe there's an instrumental version on the US/UK versions of the "Fighters Megamix" game.

The Dreamcast version of Rent A Hero No. 1 was only released in Japan.

sorry i'll be more specific, the dreamcast version of the song. as i mentioned they had it as a downloadable track for smba de amigo off seganet, but come to think it might just be the version posted above

After looking at the list of other downloadable songs for Samba De Amigo at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_de_amigo
It just looks like Sega got a bunch of their old songs and added them to the game. So it looks like your right and its just the same version of the song.
