i was just wondering if anyone else thinks that most gamers are smart? it just hit me one day, all my friends that play games too are pretty smart ( i get Straight A's not to brag). Does anyone else think this is true? Do games make you smart? Or is this just a stereotype? Please post your thoughts in a reply?

you know, i've noticed one major exception to this. most people who play basically nothing but sports games/shooters are sinfully dumb. but people who play like all kinds of video games (and rpgs in particular now that i think about it) are smarter than most other people.

but yeah, i gotta agree with ya.

yeah, I don't think its true. but its nice to think so, for some, I guess. well . ..
RPGs may help reading and comprehension skills. just as reading does. and even then not so much. . .and its really hard to argue this point, because people can and do benefit from just about anything. so I'm sure you're being helped out somehow.

most sports games and shooters(top down psikyo style) take much more effort and planning for me to get through, than the RPGs I've played. which have been amazingly simple so far.

I'm smart.. I can't stand dumb people, like people who can't spell or who just are dumb in general.

Like one time in english class, we were discussing about this book we read. The conch in the story came up several times and the teacher even described it. Then some girl was like "Whats a conch?"

Holy shit, I tell you idiocy really gets to me..

I have a few gamer friends, a lot of which are outright dumb. Most of the ones that play RPG's are fairly smart though. Interesting topic.

Yeah I'm smart too :) Actually it's weird since last year for the spelling bee, the word was rationalize (sp? lol) and everyone spelled it with a "s" like rasin (?). But since I played MGS, i know that rasin was spelled ration and I just had to add the suffixes... :) That's how I won!

Soem of my friends who play videogames are smart too... But my best friend is the biggest dumb-ass alive and he plays like sports/racing/shooter games. He still playes MGS2 for crying out loud (after beating it like 5 times). MGS2 gets boring possily at the end of the first time or the second...

I get good grades, but I know people that are smarter, but do horrible in school, because they don't apply what they know. Video games can improve reading and problem solving and hand to eye reflexs, but they really don't make you much smarter.

...well, most of my friends are what you would call "intelligent" hmmm...this thread makes me think

I Play sports, shooter, and racing ( me+cars=drool)games all the time, but i am not stupid. They may not be my favorites, but i have a couple i am addicted to. Here is my theory: the majority of dumbasses are attracted to Sports, racing, and shooter games not because they like them , but because they are afraid of ridicule. i think they like those games because somewhere deep down in their subconscious, their mind is telling them to play these games because geeks play the other games. I am actually a jock, good grades and all( i know my breed is almost extinct), but i find the only place sometimes to relax and forget about my pressure is in a video-game completely un-related to the world we live in today. I like to escape and pretend i am not me for once, but a character in a fiction world, trying to save his people or something. So if you ask me people sometimes, not all the time, only play those games because they are afraid to be made fun of for their true thoughts.

I play a signifcant amout of video games and I consider myself smart. My parents dont however. Of course if I devoted half the time I spend playing video games into spending time to study I could easily get straight A's. Right now I am in enriched classes and am getting half A's half B's. (I raised my C up)

Geez! I'd rather play games than anything else, I still manage to get a 75% tho, it's kinda scary. These games are doing things to my mind!!

I don't think school is the only measurement of one intelligence. I know personally that I get average grades in class but in my SAT's i beat out most of the smart kids in my school. (I scored about 75% higher than most of the nation [not to brag;) ]) But I do agree that most gamers are not only intelligent but they have common sense which I think is more important. The only thing is there is a tradeoff. All the time that we as gamers spend playing video games, we are also missing out on other things. Basically, what I'm trying to say that while we play video games there are other experiences that are being missed. That doesn't mean that alot of gamers aren't adventurous and outgoing, that means that non-gamers experience more.

BTW, I'd still rather be a gamer

Personally in my opinion, certain games DO make your mind more flexibal for extension of cramming memory in there. In other words, it makes it easier to remember things (I.E. vocab words for a test). Like RPG's. You must plan out strategy, and take your time, yet be a bit hasty. Similar to school, you need to take time in remembering your spelling/vocab words. Or the answers for that important quiz! Thanks to being a good student, I've been able to learn answers a night before the test! It just depends really on the game your playing...

....If you're playing a game made out of a movie (Like Harry Potter), then...YOU'RE BEING BRAINWASHED! STOP NOW, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!!!!!! X.X;;!!

I know what that's like. I am the pickiest person when it comes to spelling and using punctuation and stuff. I can't stand it when people send me e-mails or whatever with poor spelling (even though it does make me feel superior). I don't know if it's because of video games (RPGs mostly), but it might be.
I don't get the greatest grades (well, not all 'A's), mostly I get 'B's, but that's because that's all I shoot for. I bet if I put my mind to it and laid off the video games a little, I could do it.
Strange idea. . .hmmm.

I don't think it really matters what videogames you play, actually. I know people that are jocks and get pretty good games and are smart and play every game genre but despise RPG's. But I also know people that hibenate at their house and play everything other sport games and are smart. But the people that play RPG's sit and talk like they are the kings of the world and act like their special. I have friends in both situations. I personally hate sport games because all you have to do is catch a ball or something and hope the computer doesn't catch up to you and tackle you. Or, like Madden 99, you can make the play and the game does everything else. I think I have gotten smarter commen sense wise playing a lot of videogames, but have gotten dumber book wise. In 6th and 7th grade, I got straight A's. But, when I started playing RPG's in 9th grade. My grades went to A's and some B's. And now, in 10th grade, I got my first C since 2nd grade:eek: . That was in English, cause I blew off a major assignment because there was too much work involved:rolleyes: . Videogames made me out of shape and stop caring about things in my life that were once important. I don't think playing videogames make you smart, they just give you bad vision and give you something to spend time going. I don't care though, I love videogames and won't stop playing even if I get dumb. But when I got into a conversation with my dad, he kept saying I had it all figured out and that I was smart. Since then, my dad has got off my back and doesn't mind me playing videogames all the time, he use to hate it.

Well in order to play a game like Baldurs Gate 2 u need a healthy amount of intelegence, but to play a game like Unreal Tournament u need the intelligence of a fishstick (no offence).
So gamers can be very smart but games do not stimulate ur inteligence nor does it destry it.

i disagree. It doesn't matter what games you play. I play mostly sport games(no shooting games, hate them) but am still the smartest in my year. Anyway if games made you smarter strategy games would be the best for improving.

I think mathemathics make u intelegent cuz it's always logical in some way. It's like playing chess just try to figure out what ur opponent is going to do when ur about to make a move.

I am pretty smart but i'm not like a genius or anything. I get mostly A's, B's, and usually like one C. I get bad grades on tests sometimes though because i didn't feel like studying.
