New Square RPG: The Last Remnant
Remember they licensed Unreal Engine 3? Here's the result.
By Patrick Klepek, 05/07/2007
Square Enix's Final Fantasy party this month promises a flew of new announcements, not the least of which are new franchises from the RPG powerhouse. Game Informer's (via Siliconera) scooped the surprise a little early, however, revealing The Last Remnant, a next-generation RPG (we're guessing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though it's currently unspecified) directed by Hiroshi Takai, one of the game planners from The Bouncer.

Maybe Takai's learned something since his, uh, PlayStation 2 launch title seven years ago. The Last Remnant's main characters have a pretty unique styling to them, as well. You choose between the two, but Square Enix's anticipating the decision ahead of time -- one character, Rush, has been artistically styled as a traditional Square Enix hero and the other, generically titled The Conquerer, is a dark anti-hero meant for Western games.

The Last Remnant's been designed on Unreal Engine 3, and we should see the first official media come from the party on May 12 and 13. Going with Epic's technology isn't too surprising considering the company's emphasizing the focus on Western gamers. "From the conceptual stage of this project, we kept a global market in mind, placing a special emphasis on the North American market," said Takai in the Game Informer story.

We don't know much about combat, but it's turn-based, more action-oriented and has a cinematic flair. Most interestingly, however, The Last Remnant is being localized as it's developed in Japan, so Square Enix is planning a simultaneous release here and there. We'll be back with more details soon.

Final Fantasy: Dissidia for PSP
Nomura (of Kingdom Hearts) is on Character Designs (expect a lot of zippers), tagline is: "Fantasy is Endless, Fantasy has no limited form"... that's all the info for now.

Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy: Dissidia for PSP
Kingdom Hearts' Tetsuya Nomura behind character designs.
By Patrick Klepek, 05/07/2007
More and more about Square Enix's impending Final Fantasy party -- May 12 and 13, also known as next week -- is leaking through the cracks, as the company has launched a teaser website for an upcoming PSP release entitled Final Fantasy: Dissidia.

All we have on the game is that Tetsuya Nomura of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Versus XIII is handling character designs, it's on PSP and we should know more about it next week. Until then, speculate away, folks.

Another FF remake.
by IGN Staff

May 9, 2007 - With a million sales in Japan alone, it's safe to say that no one was expecting Square Enix's Final Fantasy remakes to end with Final Fantasy III. Sure enough, a few days prior to the start of the Square Enix Party, the company has revealed plans for a full remake of the next entry in the series, Final Fantasy IV.

Fully unveiled on the pages of the latest issue of Jump magazine, Final Fantasy IV makes the move to full 3D. We're not sure if it's necessarily using the exact same engine as that of FFIII, although the staff that developed FFIII are overseeing the FFIV conversion.

Square Enix has a few changes planned on top of the visual update. The game will feature new episodes, allowing players to get deeper acquainted with the storyline. Character designs have been completely redone for the title.

A release date has yet to be set for the DS version of FFIV, but we're expecting to see more of the title at the Square Enix Party this weekend. Be sure and check back here at IGNDS.

Dissidia looks like it's going to be some form of cross-over.

Um...yay?

Zidane!

Suddenly I'm very excited about this even more so. :D

Lets hope the FFVII characters (if any) don't take up too much of the spotlight.

EDIT-

Please oh please don't let it be a shitty beat-em-up. :(

Does anyone know a good site that tells about all the Anniversary events (where and when they are) BEFORE they actually happen? I am in Japan for probably the ONLY time in my life and I want to go to some of this stuff, but I can never find out about it before hand, only read reviews of it on gaming sites afterward.... :(

They were advertising the Square-Enix party for MONTHS beforehand. Newspapers, magazines, gaming magazines, flyers. It's also an annual event that happens every spring, so you just have to pay attention around the the time the event will take place. Same with TGS, which is in the fall.

If you're in Japan, pick up a few gaming magazines (or even comic magazines-- Shounen Sunday, Shounen Jump, etc.). There's no way you could have missed it.

Or, you know, you could have just visited the Square-Enix website...?

ara ara ara... thank you for stating the obvious.

Yes I read several things about there being a party on several gaming websites, but no concrete information about exactly where and when it was to be held.

And I may be IN Japan, but that doesn't mean I can read Japanese kanji (that's the whole reason why I'm here-- to learn) so the gaming magazines don't help.

At any rate, the party is over and done with. I'm wondering about more events that might be happening to celebrate the 20th anniversary, so I'm looking for an English-language resource that might have event information.

My suggestion still stands, though. Pick up Shounen Jump or Shounen Shunday and check their flyers. In the years I've been living in Japan, English sites with timely information are few and far between. You just have to get the Japanese info first (at least the name of the event) and then work from there. A lot of big events will have English-language versions of their websites, but a lot of times they're not as timely or extensive as the Japanese side (understandably). You'll find smaller events like this, too.

Actually... ^^ I've got the S-EP2007 ad right here with me, and there's a big "5/12-13 10:00-17:00" on it. I also just googled "Square-Enix Party 2007" and one of the first things that came up was Squex's press release in English, which says in English, where it takes place (Makuhari Messe).

Just do stuff like that -- you'll honestly have better luck like that.

At any rate, the party is over and done with. I'm wondering about more events that might be happening to celebrate the 20th anniversary, so I'm looking for an English-language resource that might have event information.
I may be stating the obvious again, but the Square-Enix website press releases may be one of the first places to check for any official event announcements.

Shueisha (Shounen Jump's publishers) sometimes have their own events (ie. Jump Festa) but those are often manga/anime series-related. They may show trailers or have announcements, but sometimes those are released to the press and not at a public stage event or anything.

And again, gaming magazines sometimes have ads and announcements (often the names of these events are Romanized, too, and often offer a website). So go to those websites, and then run a search on the event name to see if you get any info in English.

I know this isn't really the answer you're looking for, but as someone who lives in Japan, too, I've found myself that counting on an English website to provide information for events is sometimes just not enough. Good luck.
