If you're lucky, Odin can be pretty handy! Although when he is replaced by Gilgamesh, the quality completely downgrades, coz Gilgamesh has like 4 different attacks, 3 of which such balls.

In terms of strength, Eden wins hands down.
In terms of looks, either Ifrit, Diablos, or Cerebus (plus Cerebus talks to you!)
In terms of summoning animation, Ifrit or Eden
In terms of usage outside of battle, Tonberry by a mile, for his 'Shop' and 'Discount' abilities!
In terms of aquirability, probably Bahamut

It really depends on what you like, I love everything about Ifrit! He looks so cool! Plus his 'Ammo RF' ability is INCREDIBLY useful!

He's got the looks ( for a demon, that is. ) , the animation, the ULTIMATE POWER, and the ultimate anti-battle ability.

Eden for power, Diablos for animation, Brothers for hilarity.

PAndemona? Leviathan? what a bunch of conformists.

I found Alexander to be incredibly useful once built upon. Junctioning Zombie to your character's weapon, and then summoning Alexander turned out to be a huge pay-off in the long run. Also, you can't forget about the Revive ability this GF hands over.

I didn't tend to use Cerberus that often, only in the latter stages of the game when battling Omega and Ultima Weapon.

And obviously, what it all comes down to in the end is that Eden is the strongest GF out there, hands down.

I can't believe Phoenix hasn't been mentioned yet. That GF saved my ass A LOT during my first battle with Omega Weapon.

Edit: Oh yeah, and can't forget Gilgamesh, when he shows up in a boss battle and uses Zantetsuken.

Phoenix is easy to forget it's not a "normal" GF. But yeah, there were at least a couple of times that Phoenix saved my ass. Great GF.

Hard to say, but my favorites in descending order were probably:

Irfrit, Shiva, Bahamut, Quetzacoatl, and Leviathan.

Phoenix was pretty neat too. FF8 had the best variety of summons I think, even though the graphic power of FF10's look awesome. FF12 has by far the worst summons of all of the recent FF's. How they dropped the ball so badly in that respect i'll never understand.

In my opinion, the summons aren't all that bad. It's just different is all, and suprisingly I've started taking a liking to a few of them.

The main gripe I have about the FF12 summons is that they are fairly useless in the game. I, and probably a lot of people who played the game, summoned most of them only once, and that was simply to see the summoning CGIs. Considering that they played a decent part in the story line, that was very disappointing.

The other problem I have with them is the model designs. The summonings are no where near as spectacular as in previous FF's and I recall most merely involving a spinning circle with the character in it and some murky looking backgrounds. Some of the limit breaks were pretty nice, but a person would never see them if they never had a reason to summon one in the first place. A few had redeeming qualities, but many of the models reminded me of a bunch of monster body parts stitched together.. I didn't find their designs to be very well thought out. When I can't tell where the head begins or ends on a summon, I feel there's a problem. Their poor implementation into the combat system is another issue (with the summoner getting stuck alone and often being swarmed by monsters.)

I agree with those comments; only a select few of the summons had an actual concept behind their designs, those select few are the ones I've taken a liking to. On the other hand, you're also right when it comes to the implementation of the summons into combat. I've found myself summoning during a critical point in a battle, only to have myself killed and wasting my entire amount of MP in the first few seconds of the fight. All in all, I find FFVIII to have the best variety of summons in any Final Fantasy game.

I prefer Shiva because of the ice, Diablos from the power and Cerberus of the useful magic support

It's not necessarily my favorite GF, but I probably appreciate Quezacotl more so than any other GF for being both the wicked & lovably shrewd creature that it is, for making Triple Triad's importance (and borderline addictive gameplay) all possible.

If I were completely oblivious to each GF's ability, I'd favor Carbuncle most, because I happen to like its design best.

Gilgamesh - I think he's Flat-out Awesome. Plus I like his Swords and their Techs.

Shiva - For giving me the Doom Ability nothing more. I found that Doom can work Better then Death, if Death Dosen't work Cast Doom. I remember taking down 5 to 6 bosses with Doom.

No one is going to mention the cutest of the summons? And no I don't mean that moomba. I mean Carbuncle! I used him all the time.

I used Carbuncle fewer times than any other GF. I didn't find him to be all that useful, abilities set aside.

Leviathan-favourite clip and the damage done was decent.

I also liked Diablos and Bahamut. And Gilgamesh purely because of the fact that he's Gilgamesh, even though he had a habit of showing up during really hard fights to do minimal damage to the enemy and then using Zantestuken on bitebugs.

I've been kind of a fan of Odin since FF IV, although I was quite dissappointed when he was completely bitched out by Seifer inside the lunatic pandora...(sigh).

I don't know if it was an english dubbing problem, or just the fact that Seifer was a complete jackass, that made Odin's death all the more painfull to watch.

Diablos (Diabolous), Doomtrain (Glasyallabholas) were my two commonly used GF's. Diablos's entrance I loved, all dark and evil looking (Well... he IS a daemon after all...), and Doomtrain was very useful, combining status attacks and phyiscal attacks into one.

Thanks to FFVIII's game designers not making most bosses immune to gravity, Diablos was probably the most useful for the majority of the game.

I also liked Leviathan and Alexander, for the Recover and Revive abilities respectively.

Tonberry's abilities make him one of the most useful GF's. The fact that Eden can inflict damage over 9999 makes it the strongest GF and the rest of them (with the exception of Cactuar at level 100) are only ever capable of 9999 damage so other than each GF's respective abilities that they can offer, they're all pretty pointless for the latter of the game.

In terms of sheer 'lol' factor my favourite GF would have to be Cactaur.

Ifrit and Cactar, doomtrain was pretty useful too with the status effects.

well after playing final fantasy VII for the millionth time I decided to acutally go after eden and well eden is my favorite I love it's intro not to mention the fact that is incredibly powerful at lvl 100 and tonberry always thought it was funny that it just calmly walks toward your enemy and just stabs them with a knife.

I acutely went after Eden in Final Fantasy VII too. Nothing happened.

Okay so maybe being silly me, aside with Eden as my favorite GF for his skills, I think the timing of his summon is also why I like him >_>

If we're being realistic it's no more than about 2 minutes. Have Eden learn all four Summon Magic +%'s and have the player it's junctioned to have a decent set of magics junctioned to MAG and watch it let rip beyond 9999. :)

But for mostly battles I always use Doomtrain and Eden because of their abilities and strength..

They are all awesome in different aspects. Bahumat, traditionally, DoomTrain for cool looks. But i have to go with Alexander. I freakin love that Holy Iron Titan persona. And i know im about to make a refrence to FF IX, but that scene where Alexander whips Bahumant's sackside was awesome.

I always had a soft spot for the lovely Shiva.

Well, after recently playing and beating FFVIII (and beating all optional bosses like Ultima and Omega Weapon) I have to say that without a doubt Doomtrain is my favorite GF in terms of usefulness. Even though Diablos could do 9999 damage my characters were already doing that. Plus Doomtrain was my new best friend when I was levelling up in the Island Closest to Hell. I would just summon him and he would inflict all kinds of status effects so I could easily beat enemies there even when I was level 30 and only with two characters (which were equipped with only Bonus abilities).
In terms of looks Bahamut will always be my favorite.

Bahamut is THE best! Primarely because of his rare item skill. But I must admit, the animations in FF9 made Bahamut`s sublime image in my head. I hope that in one of the future Final Fantasies Bahamut will have a large part in a storyline.

I will pick Odin, but he isn't really a Guardian Force, but more of a NPC, so the actual Guardian Force I like would be Shiva.

The sort-of GFs all have GF cards, so in a way, they really are considered GFs.

I remember I did a report on Odin. It was a big project with a display and everything. I got an A+ on it. I think that me displaying my Odin figure really helped.

I like him the best because he seems...powerful. And he's almost the only real "knight" because he rides on horseback.

But second would be Bahamaut.

It was about the actual Norse god and no relevance to the GF...except the figure. And yes, it was a blast. It was three pages that I taped to one of those fold out display boards with a bunch of pictures of him. One of him looking like a Viking and others that I found on yahoo and in different encyclopedias. Then right on front of the whole thing...was the GF Odin mounted on Sleipner with his sword resting at the side. I also faced his slanted his head so he was looking sideways at the ground.

And because it was a 100%, I had the option to use it for any subject I wanted (anyone who got a perfect score could do that).

Eden is my BFF. It is the only summon where I can finish the boost because it takes 3 hours to do the attack.

No you can't. I tried it. You're supposed to beat 20-ish (18-22), I beat 10, then I left and saved, then I needed around 20 more again before Tonberry King came. Plus, Gamefaqs says you can't. Did it work for you or did you hear it somewhere? If this is true I'd love to see youtube evidence.

It has worked for me before, and I have no YouTube to offer because I don't have that capability. Do you have PC version of the game, though?

This is how I did it. The only actions I needed were these:

Squall - Defend
Rinoa - Defend
Selphie - Kamikaze

Then use a Phoenix Down on Selphie, and in the next battle, do the same.
Keep doing that for each Tonberry, note that it helps a lot if Selphie has 9999 max hp.
Eventually, Master Tonberry will appear after killing the Tonberry.
If you're extremely lucky, Odin will kill the final Tonberry and you will be able to use Kamikaze directly on Master Tonberry.

However, I wasn't that lucky, so I was left to fight MT with just two chars, Rinoa and Squall.
Even so he's still pretty freaking easy, his attacks will take you from 9999 to critical in one or 2 hits, so be careful, but it means that Squall can just keep using Renzokuken each turn and finish him in 10 - 12 turns.

Funny side-note,

If you Scan Master Tonberry at the very start it shows his HP as ????/????.
HOWEVER, after 2 or 3 Renzokuken's, Scan him again.
When I did, it showed roughly 61 990 / ???? LOL!

Once I got it though, I believe I used it once. Never was that useful in my opinion.

Well, I pretty much stopped using GF's in battles as early as disc 2 (or 1?) I can't remember. XD

But I did get all of them though, and Ifrit, Brothers, and Alexander had the best animations for me.

I do like Siren because of Treatment
Ifrit because of Ammo-RF
Tonberry because of call shop, haggle, and familiar.

But, for combat...I don't like any of the GF's.

Animation takes way too long for the amount of damage the summon actually does. Limit-breaks are much faster.

Who knows, but if you know Square-Enix, they change stuff all the time. FFVI's script was completely rewritten for the Nintendo DS Advance release, even though it was fine as it was. And a lot people don't know, but FFVII's script was heavily rewritten (http://agent0042.fileburst.com/pcplyfaq.txt) when it was released for PC.

Cerberus. Triple casting buffs, debuffs, healing magic and offensive magic cannot be beaten.

Diablos. Again

Diablos is cool. However casting Haste, Regen and Protect on ALL of your party in one turn is unbeatable.

I suppose so, but Diablos can make that unnecessary. Since with Enc-none you get no enemies to fight and in turn you don't need all that. And in my experience no boss is ever that hard to require ALL those buffs. Besides I prefer using Quistis to that end anyway.

I used Enc-half but I think unless I was doing a speed run enc-none would make it boring. For bosses though those buffs help. one turn isn't that much and you get a huge advantage.

To each their own.

Doomtrain because is awesome & of course it nukes away the enemy's defenses.

Agreed. In terms of "summoning a GF for it's awesomeness", Diablos definitely takes it there. It's like the bats make a cacoon (or however it's spelled) and slimey Diablos comes out. After shaking off the goo, he decides to gross us out even more by THROWING HIS GOO SPHERE AT THE ENEMY!

The summoning sequence of Diablos always reminded me of that episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion, where Unit-01 was swallowed into a sea of shadow... only to tear apart this floating white and black striped orb... dripping in blood and gore. Substitute Unit-01 for Diablos, the blood and gore for the dripping black goo... same thing more or less. Still a atmospheric appearance, just like my two other favorites, Doomtrain (Glasyalabholas in Japan) and Cerberus.

Thats what I did. For some reason every time I played through this game Diablos always went to Zell. And for me it is a tie between Shiva and Diablos. Both are crazy cool.

Without a doubt, unquestionably, and unequivicobly: Diablos, only because my game discs are screwed and I can't summon him after disc 1 at all. What you can't have is always cooler than the rest.

Odin, always. I was beyond pissed when Seifer... well, you know. Odin is stronger than that, Seifer was just a punk. At least Gilgamesh stepped in, though I prefer Odin over Gilgamesh.

Yeah. I'm pipeminded male, but she does damage amazingly well.
In the beginning she's really all you need and later in the game she's someone/thing you really want to have.

Oh! And the brothers too.
No only 'cose they're hilarious, but because the animation is LONG and gives you time to hit the square like mad. :3

My favorite is Quezacotl. The card ability is really useful :P I like the brothers too. They have the longest animation for you to boost their power :)
But I also like Eden for the Power

They're both great summons. I also like Carbuncle because he can make some battles ridiculously easy.

Bahamut (although he's nowhere near as cool as his FFVII appearances, that massive dragon is still a favourite)

And finally, Gilgamesh (I still remember all the FFVII fanboys and girls going on and on about Gil's appearance not long after FFVIII's release, thinking Gil was actually that silver haired mummy's boy, simply because he wielded Masamune. Of course these fools didn't realize it was a FFV reference (mostly because FFV hadn't had an international release at that time, but it was still funny to see all the 'rumours' going around about him at the time. ;)).

Sadly yes. Even before the game was released I'd read online and in gaming magazines that there were rumours that Sephiroth had a secret appearance in FFVIII, owing to people mistaking Gilgamesh wielding Masamune for him (and the Brady Games official guide didn't really help either, pointing out that Gil wielded 'Sephiroth's blade').

Of course nowadays fans know better, but it still caused a real stir at the time. ;)

If I were one of the many who thought Sephiroth would be appearing in FFVIII, my reaction would be about akin to what it was when I watched Aeristh get killed: "Wonder what's for dinner tonight. . . ."

Well, I suppose the Internet was a lot less accessible and well organized those days, so people couldn't make the connection and just find somewhere that Gilgamesh was in FFV.

Bahamut is probably my favorite, only because he/its wiser beyond its years. I feel the same way about Soundwave.

And Eden, when you want something to no longer live in any form. (after watching the cutscene of eden i'm just like, why would anything want to live after that?..i'd much rather just kill myself)

Not really, If level him right he's really good, because he's non elemental he does good damage against everything. He has no weakness but no amazing strength, Which I prefer over something really good against one thing but totally crap against another thing :). That's just me though haha

Sure he's weak. At the beginning of the game, if you use the junction system but don't exploit it, your physical and magic attacks pretty take away about 1/2 or 1/3 the HP of most enemies. So, for instance, a Bite Bug with 400 health: on Disc 1, for most people, Diablos will be hitting for around 40-100 points of damage, at most a quarter of its health, while Squall & co. will probably be hitting for much higher. In order for Diablos to do as much as physical/magic attacks, he has to be between around 35-50, and by the time you've leveled him up there, your characters are between level 35-50, and by that time you've got better magic junctioned to strength to pretty much kill most monsters (enemies on the Islands Closest to Heaven and Hell aside) in one or two hits. Diablos can never kill any enemies by himself until he's level 100, and when you eventually level him up there, it doesn't matter anyway because your characters are level 100 and can kill anything in 1 hit.

So yes, he is pretty weak. Also, many if not most bosses are immune to his attack. He does have his uses (especially for enemies like Snow Lion, where 10% of the enemy's health is like 9999 damage), but for the most part his attack is weak.

Useful for ENC-NONE. I don't ever recall using Diablos in battle beyond the first ever time to see what it was. Just a demi based attack which is quite frankly, a load of bollocks.

Favourite GF though, hard to pick as I loved all the artwork for them. Probably Doomtrain for its uniqueness.

You can't mess with a god on a horse. One of the only GFs to get extra screen time and an alternative cut when fighting Seifer :)

Mine is Quezacotl, absolutely love it. It is both useful and cool looking. It's unfortunate it shares the element with such another top summon in Ramuh, as I would have liked to have seen it appear more often.

I liked Odin mostly for my real world interest in Norse mythology. Sad to see where his fate led him in this game. I was also fond of Leviathan mostly out of my like for the Water element in general, concerning classical elements.

Diablos and Leviathan , by the summoning animation ... Ifrit and Bahamut , by the looks/design ....... = )
