I just got the game last night and played for about 2 hours. I would like to ask whether it's better to turn the gambits on or off?

Sorry, but I don't fully understand the point of gambits as of now. I'm also confused about the License system.

Replies are much appreciated!

You will when you can purchase them and "write" them on your own. You probably only have Vaan and Penelo right now. They just have the auto Foe: Nearest visable/Attack gambit right now.

You'll never want to turn them off once you have a full party. You need Licenses to equip the equipment in the game and to cast the spells and techniks that you buy.

You're right. I stopped playing when Vaan and Penelo were in Giza Plains.

Thanks for the reply!

No problem. If you have any other gameplay questions you can ask them in the Q & A Thread.

I've been wanting to say this forever, so I'm going to: Think about Licenses like the training programs in the Matrix. You get a Gladius and you don't know how to use it, so you have to get a crash course in it. That's the license. :-P

Definitely on. They can be annoying sometimes, but the positives outweigh the negatives. I never actually finished the game though, I'm got stuck fighting a judge, and i didn't like that game all that much to start with. Which is a shame, since I'm a big FF fan. :( I wish they'd stuck with turn based battling.

Which judge are you stuck on? If it's one of the first two make sure you have quickenings available. I made a mad dash for the quickening spots on the board as soon as they became available, and they helped a lot with the early bosses.

I've now progressed into the game and I agree that the positives of gambits outweigh its negatives. It's annoying though when they start picking up fights against weak enemies that doesn't give much experience points and loot.

Just use Foe: Party Leader's Target. Put it above Foe: nearest visible.

Do I have to switch my party leader's gambits off for this to take effect?

No. I have that set up on all of my characters. They are the only Attack gambits I use, outside of Foe: Flying.

I always have mine on, it's quite helpful once you get used to it.

Yes it's quite tiring to have your gambits off when you already have a full party.

I haven't been there yet but I'll take it as a warning.

It really doesn't help so much at the start. I find it hard to control since they sometimes change targets when their original target was nearly dead. But it's pretty helpful for later stages and some enemies that pops up from the ground.

I find that gambits really shine when it comes to buffing your characters. Late in the game: having the Ally: Any - Protectga and the Self: Bubble gambits really saves a lot of time. Also healing gambits are a must.

Indeed. I always make with the Ally: Any -- Float.

Self > Libra. Most important gambit ever.

If you don't want a character to attack someone just use the escape button (R2) and move out of range. I just let them get on with it unless I am trying to get a chain of kills, if the monster is that puny it only takes one hit to kill and LP are LP- you often only get one whether it is a wolf or a Dark knight

It's a matter of personal preference. I recommend that Gambits remain on, but it's ultimately your decision. Gambits help simplify combat in that you don't have to baby-sit each individual character. Once you've gotten a feel for the game then you may want to try turning the gambits off to ante up the challenge. I played through the game once with the Gambits on, then I decided to play it through a second time without. Be sure to read those Gambit tutorials throughly because they can become quite confusing.

I always keep them on.
I can leave my characters alone in most boss battles with Gambits thus like Attack<>Team Leaders Target.
Any Party member Health <70% - Curaja
Any Party member Health <20% - X-Potion
Any Party member Dead - Phoenix Down
Any Party Member Silenced - Echo Herb.

Thsi way, if someone gets badly hurt they are instantly healed fully, if they die, they are resurected and healed, if they cannot cast spells due to Silence, the are cured and all others hammer the enemy repeatedly.
Leave them too it, grab a cuppa and come back later :)
I find they work excellently if they are queued correctly :)

Haha I never bothered with it XD Libra doesn't show much info at all anyway. Or maybe I did something wrong WHEN I used it?

So true.

Did anyone bother with putting stuff like this?

Foe: Protect, Shell, Haste -> Dispel etc...

I thought that kind stuff was a waste of space.

When you have a 5 people, it's good to set gambits, that way everyone is doing what you want them to do and when someone dies, nothing changes really. Unless you have them set differently.

I keep them on, except in very specific situations. It's too much of a headache controling every single character otherwise. Especially in regards to buffs and healing.

Some enemies (mainly marks and optional bosses) are immune to it, but Libra also allows you to see the purple trap spikes in the field. Walking around without seeing those is literally like a death trap. :p
