This game is old now, very old. I remember Square saying that they would keep the servers running as long as they have subscribers and won't stop them until they day they have no more. But do you think this game would really last that long? In order to keep the game fresh for consumers they need to release a new expansion at least once a year or at least add downloadable things such as Quests, items, monsters, areas, and other minor things to change up the game.

I've had this game for years now but I haven't been subscribed in almost 2... I'm thinking of activating my account again because I miss this game and I want to see what all has changed since my last login. This was one of the few MMORPG's I ever liked to be honest.

Personally, it'll be out until a new MMORPG comes out. Needless to say, the same thing happened with Diablo. Once WoW came out, Blizzard focused all of there attention on it and basically left Diablo for dead. So, it'll be soon...don't worry.

Probably after one more expansion. Unless they do something crazy like cut monthly fees. Other online games will come along that people will want to play and people will probably get tired of the same old gameplay

I have a question about this game. Is there an offline story? Could I play it offline if I just bought the hard drive?

oh.

I was watching my FFXII bonus thing and somewhere in it the way the game was worded made it sound like it had offline playability.

Talking about the retrospective? I never miss an opportunity to say that I could have done it better with sockpuppets and iMovie :p

I haven't had my account activated in about a year, due to the plug being pulled on AoL support for the PS2. The influence of IPs and consoles themselves could have have an effect on the life of the game. I was a dedicated player up until AoL stopped me. I'll be back on the first chance I get. How much of an impact do you think IPs have on the game? AoL isn't really much of an IP anymore, since dial-up is almost dead. So anyone who had a PS2 and AoL might just be a small portion of the entire FFXI community. So that group may not have influenced the life of the game so much subscription wise.

Another faux pas by you, this thread is like 10 months old. You should check the dates before posting..

No, the biggest faux pas was sticking with Almost Online.

So, I didn't want to make a new topic for something that I could easily ask in this thread. Which is still on the first page of the FFXI section. That's why I'm bumping ;)

I wanted to ask the same thing basically. Times change, and so do Square's directions. So, now that FFXIV was announced, will XI stick around? I want to play XI eventually, I've spent many hours watching my friend play it, and I got the original boxset with the hard drive and everything a year ago. And my friend moved and gave me his Internet Adapter. I'm not in a suitable condition of lifestyle for an MMORPG at the moment, but I would still like to play this eventually. Has Square said anything about how long they're going to keep this game going?

According to Square Enix, yes, FFXI service will continue. For how long though, they've declined to say.

FFXI is most likely safe for several more years I'd wager, due to the fact Square Enix is still releasing the new add-on mini-expansions for it and are still releasing new content (new missions for Wings of the Goddess, new armour and weapons etc) so don't worry about FFXI going under any time soon.

P.S. Sprays the stench of this dead thread with heavy-duty deodorant. ;)

LOL, yeah, I don't see how they could cancel it if they're actually still releasing new content for it. That would definitely indicate they're interested in supporting it.

They have said it will still be around after XIV comes out. Worst case I would guess if they lose a massive amount of subscriptions to XIV I'd figure they might close servers and move people (which in the case of a downsizing population would be a good idea. No one wants to play an MMO with only a few hundred people per server.) But yeah it's pretty safe to say it will be around for a while. They're still tweaking and adding on job abilities and the like to this day, the July update was like 3 days ago and they made some nice changes to the Ninja job, added the second (of three) mini-expansion, new Wings of the Goddess missions (and areas, too!), and some other stuff.

Um, I don't know what server you're on, but on my server (Midgardsormr) the average player population at any one time is usually close to around 2000 players currently logged in (and apparently Midgard is regarded as being an underpopulated server). I have seen more (around 8000 online was the most I've seen at the one time), but the lag was horrendous and disconnections were common.

And apparently the servers are only capable of handling around 20000 simultaneous connections anyway so the whole point is moot.

Rumor to stop server functions 3 years after FFXIV release.

Rumor to stop server functions 3 years after FFXIV release.

I wouldn't listen to rumours though - they have a habit of being baseless. As long as FFXI continues to make money for Square Enix (which it still is), then there is reason for them to continue to support it.

After all, the FFXI development team still haven't made a firm decision to adopt an online delivery of expansions (pioneered with the recent mini 'add-on' packs) or continue with proper physical expansion packs, although the add-on system hasn't been too popular with the FFXI community.

As for the comment Square Enix made a while ago about there being 'at least a year's worth of new content planned for FFXI', this is standard procedure anyway, in that they have new content ideas planned out a year in advance at all times, so that doesn't mean FFXI will cease service after this date.

No, FFXI service will continue for quite a while yet.
