I recently saw Domingo's amazing thread with an insane amount of music, all of which he says are 320 kbps. A lot of the soundtracks up there I already have, but at a lower bitrate. My question is, how high does a bitrate have to go before there is no detectable difference to the human ear. In other words, is there a point where the music quility sounds the same regardless of how much higher the bitrate goes?

depends on your hearing, your sound setup, ambient noise, the ripper and the encoder.

kbps alone is one rather insignificant variable in the big scheme of things.

some people can tell the difference between a 320kbps LAME/EAC mp3 and a lossless copy. most can't.
