Is final fantasy the most sold video game series of all time?

Tekno

Maybe it is, maybe not. Dunno.. Tomb Raider and the Zelda series are bestsellers as well and maybe they have sold more then FF. Ofcourse FF has 11 games and even more, but yea O_o

*moving this to general gaming, someone can help you there I think O_o*

Kunio and Megaman are the two largest game series. safe to say that its one of them.

probably Megaman.

Don't know...there are an awful lot of Contra games out there as well...think they would give just about any series a run for its money...

All these are great responses, but i cant believe any of them has sold more than ALL the final fantasy games combined. I'm talking about the MOST SOLD video game series...all games, from each title...if you know what i mean. With how many FF games there are and how successful, i just dont see another series outselling it. But i've been wrong before.

Does Mario count? I think that'd acutally be a few different series', but if it would count, he'd probably be high up on the list. Also, the Street Fighter series has about a million installments, so I think it's safe to say that it would be high on the list as well.

It's either Mario or Megaman..... I don't believe that Final Fantasy even came close to those.

No, it's not Final Fantasy. I'd be willing to bet that Dragon Quest has outsold Final Fantasy. Not to mention all the Super Mario games. Those I'd say have almost definately sold more than Final Fantasy. And Mega Man is a good pick too.

And, I may be going out on a limb here, but I'd be willing to bet on Tetris, too.

Magaman has alot of games, it could be that. FF is a big seller, but I don't think its the bigest. Mario tho has more games than I can think of.

I think that Street Fighter would have to have sold more than Megaman. There are more installments in the series, and it seems more popular. Just think of all the people that own at least one SF game. For me, that includes about all the gamers I know.

TK

Eh, I dunno, there aren't THAT many more SF games than MM ones. You have to count all the MM games 1-9, then all the X games 1-6, both Legends games, both Game Boy ones, and there's also crazy spinoffs like Mega Man Soccer, Mega Man Power Fighters 1 & 2 (or something like that - I forget their actual names) and Mega Man Battle Network. All those ones I mentioned add up to 21 installments and I know there's been more than that. I'm sure there's been more SF games than that but I doubt there's been more than 30.

And, Street Fighter is actually not all that popular. If SF was as popular as MM then Capcom probably would still be making assloads of them like they were a few years ago. The SFIII series sold quite poorly, for example.

Certainly not more SF than Megaman. SF is limited to obsessive arcade updates, but these aren't all sold on consoles, and they all sale "decently". hundreds of thousands. Megaman dominated the NES , and has sold at about the same level of SF in the modern era. plus you consider the Megaman re-releases(the entire NES set) on the PS, which all sold nicely in japan. Megaman definately dominates. SF is a ways behind. I believe mario is too. not many mario games. now, games starring mario, the number jumps. but his "side game" role is a bit more of a modern occurence yes? he was in wrecking crew in the old days. . . Yoshi's Island. . . we can't count cameos. I suppose he's up there.

Mario's main adventures might not be numbered nearly as many as Mega Man's, but they sell a *lot* of copies. I'd say it probably would all add up to at leat be tailing Mega Man.

If we're talking Mario's main adventures:

mario bros.

Super mario bros.

Super mario bros. 2

Doki Doki panic/Super mario bros. 2 US

Super Mario bros. 3

Super Mario World

Super Mario 64.

Super Mario land 1-3.

quite honestly, i don't think its up for comparison. on the NES, Megaman dwarfed mario. 7 games? all big sellers up to 4 at least, and the rest didn't slouch. plus re-releases, all going over 100,000. Mario does indeed sale alot. I think his main adventures are in the FF range of comparison. simply not enough games. though the high US sales can make up a huge difference. Mega man on the NES sold well in the US. so between the two. plus the continued well saling of the SNES/PS games. Its just too many for mario to keep up with. unless you add the games he makes appearances in.

But some of the Super Mario games, particularly the NES ones, I think, sold way more than any Mega Man ever even got close to. In fact I think Super Mario Bros. 3 is like one of the top 2 or 3 bestselling games of all time. And, you might not be taking into account the Mario re-releases for the Game Boy systems.

Plus, I think it's safe to count games that weren't part of the main series, but that he was the star of - Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario come to mind, and I think there's probably others too. If you don't count those, then you can't count Mega Man Legends, Battle Network, or any other spinoffs.

I would guess that Mega Man probably has sold more than Mario, but I doubt that Mario is really very far behind. Especially since none of the X games or the later games in the original MM series were really big sellers - certainly not flops, but there's no way any of them sold on the same level as one of Mario's adventures.

If we count all of Mario's side games, then I'd say they're in the same range. but Mario has been breaking out into new series only recently. and all the games are not in the "mario" range.

Mario 3 shouldn't be in that top 3 anymore. There just wasn't the level of system saturation at that time. now, if someone can find some actual sales figures, i would LOVE to see them. maybe mahoujin guru guru will jump out and surprise everyone as the #1 selling series. Then there's the SUPER ROBOT/Special FX heroes ensemble games which are too numerous to even fathom. dodgeball, pinball, soccer . . .

I dont know much about sales of games because i never really bother to think about it...but i honestly dont think the amount of titles in a series makes the game a higher seller.

But here is a series that didnt have to many titles and is by far one of the best.

Nes : Legend of Zelda 1 and 2

GB : Links awakening , Oracle of Ages and Seasons , not to mention the color version to Links awakening.

Snes : Link to the past ( great game ) :D

N64 : Zelda OoT and Mask of Majora

if i missed any lol im sorry , oh yeah! anyone ever hear of philipps cdi? lol they had zelda aswell a side scrolling action style game.. anyways..FF is great but it is not the highest selling game ever.

It is? I've seen more Megaman and Mario stuff than I have seen Final Fantasy stuff... then again Final Fantasy had 2 animes (both of them sucked) a movie (people expected too much out of it) and tons of games...

Megaman on the other hand has 2 animes (Megaman EXE is starting), MANY series and spin-off games, and is really famous around many countries.

Ok You Guys Gotta Realise Something ABout FF...

2 and 3 for the nes were not released in america...
The first Pal Final Fantasy Was Mystic Quest Then 7, 8 , 9 and 6 was released just recently...

The Majority Of Final fantasy Games Were Never Released Outside Japan And None of The Snes FFs Made it to Pal

However Id Say Roughly Every installment Of Megaman (Dislike Him As Much As I Do) Has Made It Both To America ANd pal Territories.
But The One Title For The Most Sales?

Id Say Either FFVII Space Invaders Or Super Mario Brothers

It has to be the Mario series and Mario spinoffs. That little italian plumber practically rules Japan. Not to mention how he runs shit over here. But there is a demonic series alot of people have forgotten...POKEMON. I remember reading this magazine a while back and the top 4 games in the world were pokemon games. They may not have as many games out but they are pretty close.

Mario, Zelda, DK, Crash, Spyro, Tomb Raider, Megaman, FF, They're all big. But the biggest game franchise, I'd say Pokemon. Those games have sold like hot cakes internationaly. Yup.

I would toss it up between Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan).

The Baldur's Gate series has sold quite a bit, and other online-game companies as well. And as some others have said, the Tomb Raider series had sold bunch. Well it doesn't plan to stop, as they're planning to put Croft on the PS2 in: Tomb Raider- Angel of Darkness.

Kind of a drama game more than a Tomb exploration one. Some tactics from MGS2 will even be in there.

Looks pretty good to me.
