You have to kill 20 Toberry's. You'll know when you hit the number because RIGHT when you kill the last he'll jump out, so make sure you're healed. He's not too hard, if you have Irvine on your team use AP Amm/Pulse Ammo and Renzo with Squall. Have the other character heal or cast Auras on those two.

I think 20 is the average number of tonberries you need to kill; the King may appear slightly before or after you reach that number. The best way to keep track of how many you killed is to equip a GF, setting it to learn a skill it hasn't learned yet. You can use that as a counter because each tonberry gives 1 AP.

Note that you are allowed to leave to save your game, which is a pretty good idea. Also note that Diablos doesn't affect the king, but it does do a huge amount of damage on normal tonberries.

<font color=red face="comic sans ms">Yeah, it's not exactly 20 Tonberries, it varies slightly around this number; I have seen it as few as 16, or as many as 26 before the king appears. Some people may say that the king appears when you have 20 Chef's Knives, but this is not true either.

I find the Tonberries can be killed quite quickly if you cast Meltdown on them and then Aura on Squall to use Renzokuken (after 2 Renzokukens it should be dead, otherwise just attack physically after that). Annoyingly, Quistis's Degenerator and Selphie's Rapture limit breaks don't work, although you could try looking for The End in Selphie's slots.

Summoning GF's just makes the battles longer than they need to be really. As an alternative to the strategy above, you could cast Demi magic and Quistis's Micro Missiles limit rbeak early on in the battle to cause considerable damage, then just attack physically at the end of the battle.

Once you have killed enough Tonberries, the king just appears at the end of one of the battles once you have killed enough. The king has quite a lot of HP, so I would suggest using Meltdown on him and then casting Aura on Squall and Zell. Keep your HP above about 3500 and you shouldn't have trouble in the battle. :)

Yea its 20 for sure, cause I counted. Anyway heres the strat I used to woop him bad.

Hes very strong if all your characters are Lv100 as his str and HP are based off the total level of your party. Alls I did was enter the battle with Squall Lv100 and use 2 other guys like Lv10. When I started the battle, I just used aura on squall and wooped him soo fast. If all your characters are Level 100 in the battle it will be hard, as I've tryed it.

Granted, this thread is now... 5 years 6 months and 15 days old, but I have to ask... Why did you have a Lv100 Squall and two other characters at Lv10. Sure it has benefits but it seems a bit unneccessary.

(I was trying to verify whether the chef knife count rumor was true and stumbled across this while running searches.)

((I just reloaded FF8 after several years.))
