I'm completely new to Final Fantesy 8, don't know what it's about, was just handed the disks by a friend who says it's a great game.

I can watch the first intro movie thing with the credits fine. When I go to create a new game, an intro movie with waves and a field comes up. It's really glitchy. Every second or so, it will pause for just a fraction of a second, cutting up the sound. I've tried turning down movie detail and removing reverb, etc. with no luck.

Is there a way to make the movies run smoothly so I can enjoy the game?

I'm assuming you have the PC version.
See if you can find updated drivers for your video card, or...
Do a DXDiag or post up the specs of your laptop.
But I'll also assume that your laptop is new, so I'll do some checks on any issues your card will have running FF8.

*Edit* I'm not positive that there would be issues with the card since it supports 2.0 shaders, but it would help if you could find out if the FMVs are either video files or some other format.

I checked the documentation and the only known issues they haven't resolved were with Battlefield 2 and KOTOR II.

I have a laptop, which complicates things. Apparently laptop makers tend to change the way the system looks at video cards just enough so that normal driver ATi updates won't install.

I think I've actually been using the drivers you linked to since about January 11th. I had to tweak the install config file a bit to make them install. They are the latest version, and they work great, but the version number looks different for some reason.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M55-S139. It actually does have some known issues with the video card, apparently there is a BIOS level bug with it. KOTOR and other OpenGL-based games that use certain lighting effects are nearly unplayable.

I'm now three hours into the game, and the video files that are installed on the hard disk (aka, the ones the CDROM doesn't spin up for) seem to work relatively fine, abit with scratchy audio. I'm guessing that if I could get the game to run completely from the hard disk, I'd be fine.

edit: No, I just made an ISO of the disk, pointed the registry toward the ISO mount and tried. It did run smoother then from CD, but not by much.

I think the video files are in the Blink format, judging by the blinkw32.dll file in the folder. I tried getting an updated dll, but the game crashed, so I reverted back to the original.

edit: I tried to give the game a go under Ubuntu and Wine. Same problem. I was like, 'what the heck, I'll just see it on youtube.'
Guess what? Exact same problem. On YouTube. I'm thinking that this is some fundamental issue my hardware has with this sort of FMV file.

edit the second: Huh. I found a patch on Eidos website that fixed it. Sweet.
