I was just wondering this while listening to some FFIX music this morning.

Do you think any of the other characters, specifically Steiner and Beatrix, knew of Zidane's surprise unveiling at the play in the end?

I always just chocked up everyone's attendance at the play to the idea that Garnet probably invited everyone. In my eyes, it always seemed like they were having a reunion after going their seperate ways for an entire year. But now that I'm thinking about it, maybe Baku and Tantalus leaked Zidane's surprise to all the other characters.

Obviously this has no real bearing on the actual outcome of the game's ending, but I was just curious.

It did kind of feel like Beatrix and Steiner knew about it, especially when they opened the door for Garnet to run out into his arms. The others didn't really seem that surprised, so I defintely think that Garnet was the only one who didn't know about Zidane's arrival.

Yeah, I also think Dagger was the only one who didn't know about it. Because there's one thing that she never quite learned, and that's HOW TO FRIGGEN STAY IN THE LOOP.

"I'm always one step behind no matter what I do," indeed.

...just kidding. ;)

But, yes, I do think everyone was in on the surprise. No real reason I'm basing it on other than I think it's cute if they all planned it as a big "Hehehe, let's see if she can figure THIS out..." surprise.

Why does garnet hit zidane while she hugs him?

Um, because she's angry that he didn't let her know he was alive? It's been a year after all. I'd be pissed if the love of my life walked off to save Kuja by himself, refused to let others follow, and then didn't let me know that he survived.

I think I've seen that asked before. Alexandria is right. There's all sorts of reasons why that could be. Besides that, maybe she also still harbors some resentment in a way for the way that he ran off. She's obviously very emotional. I bet you if Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series were here, she could give you a detailed explanation of that. This would be right up her alley.

And to answer the original question --- not sure. It's possible. But I'm not sure about Beatrix and Steiner though --- wasn't Beatrix planning to hang up her sword and retire for good, until Steiner stopped her and expressed his feelings for her?

Hmm, I had forgotten about that until you brought it up. I think you're correct and Beatrix was planning to retire from being General. But that happened during the game. It's possible that Steiner and Beatrix didn't know about Zidane's return until right around the time of the play.

Also, I was thinking about Amarant. We see him walking to the kingdom of Alexandria with Lani following him. (I honestly don't remember if we actually see them in the crowd at the play...) If he was returning to Alexandria, I have a feeling that it might've taken some more persuasion that a simply invitation from Garnet. He doesn't seem like the type of guy to enjoy plays, lol. So, maybe once he heard that Zidane would be there, Amarant wanted to get another chance to understand what made Zidane tick?

Wow, somehow I've never thought about this before, that everyone knew that Zidane has returned, except Garnet..

Well, I always assumed that only the guys from Tantalus knew, since Zidane was playing the main part in the theater play at the end.

The way how Steiner and Beatrix together react on Garnet's running down to reach for the stage: They first stop her (as some sort of momentum for in the beginning of the story, as how Steiner especially tried saving and protecting Garnet from the thiefs), then they easily let her through.
xD The way they react, that could easily be 'cause they've known about Zidane being back all along, like Zulu said.

The same with Amarant, why would he go to a silly play.. just for the reunion with the others, or,

they all "felt" they had to go, for Zidane's return?~

True, the more I think about it, the more I want to believe that only Garnet didn't know about Zidane's return.

In that case, she should've ran around hitting everyone after she hit Zidane. Beatrix, Steiner, Marcus, Eiko...anyone she could get her hands on, haha. I mean, why discriminate and only hit Zidane when everyone else was in on the secret? :-P

Heh. By then, I think her anger had already evaporated.

She wasn't "angry" at Zidane, but just surprised. I highly doubt that she had any angry feelings towards him, and especially because she obviously had hope for his return someday.

Hehe, who says she DIDN'T give everyone a little punch or two afterwards? ;)

I think she was totally surprised and not "angry," either. It was more like a "do you realize exactly WHAT YOU DID TO ME? HUH? DO YOU?? DO YOU?!!" type of thing.

I thought it was cute; it was one of my favorite parts of the ending, actually. :) Becuase it was really human. It showed emotion and a little humor, and most of all, it wasn't "stereotypical." You'd just expect them to hug and kiss and whatnot, you don't expect her to start hitting him.

I agree, I think it was really human too. I give my boyfriend a little punch in the arm if he says something out of line. I would probably have the same reaction Garnet did if he was gone for a year.

It was an unpretictable action on her side, but then again, not really. She hadn't seen him for over a year, so she had no idea how to respond, so she hit him, simply because she was so overwhelmed by his return.

I think the most important part of her reaction were her tears though. Material proof that she was overwhelmed (like you said Zulu). Of course, they were tears of joy.

I think Garland explains this to Zidane some time in Memoria.

I think Garland explains this to Zidane some time in Memoria.

Garland explained that because all memories are eventually linked to one "parent" memory (which is represented in the crystal), everyone potentially has the ability to unlock and remember memories from other peoples' experiences that they never lived through themselves.

Although they weren't deep enough into Memoria for everyone's memories to finally be linked, Zidane remembered that part of Dagger's memory easily simply because she'd told him about it before, so their memories had already become linked in that sense.
