Well recently a friend got me watching his anime. I decided that i enjoyed it, and seeing as there's a massive anime section in my local HMV, i'm gonna buy some.

What i wanna know: what should i buy? I like action, or series with a good story line. Not just mindless killing like some i've seen before...

If you haven't seen Hellsing Ultimate, get it.

For good story, Now and Then, Here and There.

Grave of the Fireflies seems to be a consistent classic with most people.

I would check out Gungrave. (and don't judge it by the first episode, because it goes pretty differently after that)

I have watched Trigun, and I'd recommend it. The others that I have seen listed in this thread are also good suggestions. If you aren't one to be shocked by lack of story line quality or boobs in the face out of nowhere, try Ranma 1/2. And the Tenchi Muyo series are all just classic. Another one worth watching Episode One with, is Neon Genesis Evangelion; you'll either love it, or you'll hate it. Those are the best of the nineties in my opinion. Other notewothy ones are anything by Hayao Miyazaki. Any Slayers series... they are just funny. And of course there are the pokemon series, three Dragonball series (Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Dragonball GT), and of course Naruto. Another good one that's quite popular, is Bleach. It's good and new, and it's one of my favorites... and yet it still manages to be pretty much overrated. It's pretty good.

I liked Gungrave, but I didn't even get halfway into it. I found some on tape at a friends.

If you want some great anime, get Ping Pong club. Its brilliant.

try these:

Captain Harlock
Full Metal Panic
Last Exile
Ghost in the Shell S.A.C

those 4 are a pretty good place to get you started, imo.

The Read or Die OVA is a good place to start, as is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (or the Original as well).

Saiyuki manages to be serious, touching, and action-packed all at once, the same with Saiyuki Reload. (One of my favorite series.) I'll also recommended Weiss kreuz for storyline and action, even though it's a fangirl classic. XD

I also recommend Yu-Gi-Oh!, if you can get ahold of the unedited version at your local media store. (Not GX, gods no.) The same with Shaman King (the Saturday morning cartoon versions of both shows are terrible). The Appleseed movie is worth watching. At the risk of being repetitive, I also recommend Trigun. Naruto is okay, but it's completely overrated thanks to the fanbase it has. (I haven't watched Bleach yet, so I can't make a judgement on it.)

If you don't mind mechs, I recommend any of the Gundam Series. (Gundam Wing got me hooked on anime.) At least see the full movie version (not the OVA) of Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz; it'll give away basically the entire show without sitting through all 49 episodes.

Slayers is hilarious, definitely watch it. If you want something a little cute with some fanservice, Chobits. Video game based anime also usually manages to be okay. Star Ocean EX, Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy: Unlimited are the only ones I'm really familiar with.

Hope I didn't put your brain in overkill and managed to be of some use.

I would recommend One Piece, though you'll only be able to buy the English dub which isn't worth it. You could also check out Naruto, which is passable in english. Anything by Studio Ghibli is awesome, but its not really action.

Ghost In The Shell SAC 1 is fantastic, although it does get very involved with the storyline/plot.
Get Backers has some decent action in it too.
Cowboy Bebop is a great series.
Beserk I haven't seen personally
Trigun is good for a bit of fun :D

That's all I can think of that was at my local JB Hi-Fi store.
